Fantastic experience: All the staff are very friendly and helpful. I was very apprehensive about joining because I had a bad experience at a previous gymn. All the people in the class I as taking offer praise and encouragement,makes me want to do better.

Negative experience: Don’t bother going here anymore. Spent 6 months remodeling only to take away the sauna and steam room permanently, no long have one at all. Disappointed at the membership cost and loss of useful services.
Michael - It is a bummer that the steam and sauna rooms will not be returning to our Battle Creek location at the end of this phase of the remodel project. Like all of our clubs we are constantly working in upgrade phases. The next phase at Battle Creek will include some extensive work in the pool and spa area. Our future goal would be in install larger, more robust co-ed steam and sauna rooms inside the pool area (similar to our South and Lancaster locations). For now it's just a short drive to one of those clubs that feature those amenities. One of the benefits of having access to all five club locations. Negative experience: I pay $85 a month for a single person membership and the locker room has been unavailable for at least 6 months and maybe almost literally a year!!!! They continue to raise the prices to make up for I don't know what the fines they got during covid? The service and the amenities just keep getting worse!!! And the signs all over the place to lock your things up looks incredibly ghetto. Why don't you just stop attracting the kind of people who would steal?

Fantastic experience: I love the water aerobics class, Luke and Laura are great instructors. I started the first of September and the arthritis in my knees is better. I was very hesitant about joining a jym but I've found every single employee to be very kind and helpful, as well as the people who are there to get healthy by working out. So glad I joined. I look forward to starting another class soon.

Fantastic experience: In town visiting for a week and wanted to make sure I kept up with my aqua fitness goals. The 2 week pass costs the same as 5 drop in classes at another facility and gives me access to the full membership minus the special stuff like towel service. Great value. The 8am MWF and 9:30 am TTH aqua fit classes are a great mix of cardio, strength, and core training with proper warm up and cool down stretching. I enjoy having different instructors because they always bring something a little different to the workout and both were exemplary. The vibe I encountered was a very welcoming one. I'm a fat fitness enthusiast and nobody uttered a word about it to me. We were all just some people looking to move our bodies. I also observed many different types of bodies in the gym working out while I was there. Seems pretty welcoming for those who sometimes get anxious about such things. For those unfamiliar to this location: if you don't prefer using a warm pool for your aqua fitness, they reserve the first lane of the lap pool as well and it's easy to hear and see what you're doing. Great job! I'm excited to come back next time when the renovations are finished. (A note for visitors in fall of 2024: the locker rooms are being remodeled right now. There are adequate private changing rooms and one private shower you can use, but probably plan to head home to shower and get ready after class. Also the parking lot is a little complex as they do the exterior of the building so build in an extra 5 minutes to figure that out.)

Fantastic experience: Joining the Courthouse has been a wonderful experience. From hearing someone call me by name right when I walk through the door or as I leave to instructors noticing that I am a new face and introducing themselves, I have definitely felt seen. The variety of classes offered is why I joined and I have not been disappointed. The energetic and encouraging instructors made it feel like home from the beginning. Staying fit should be fun, the Courthouse gets that and offers a wide variety of options to so everyone can find a good fit.

Fantastic experience: Nice facility. This place has been pillar in Salem. Been in the area for over 30 years. This location has swimming. Swimming includes lanes, area for people to have fun and they even have lessons. They also have weights of all types for lifting and they have basketball court to play a game with your friends. They also have spinning classes. Other locations have tennis courts and racquetball courts. If you want a clubhouse to take care of your body, this is a locally owned club for all types.

Negative experience: Was not informed upon entering online membership facility would offer limited aquatic features until January 2024 due to major remodel. So after a $78 sign up fee I just spent $75 cancelation fee, all within 2 months
Eleonore - I'm sorry you were unaware that we were in the middle of a multi-million dollar renovation project. When completed the Battle Creek location with boast brand new locker rooms, an expanded weight room, entirely new functional training space along with an updated lounge and coffee bar. The pools and spa are open and there are a couple of private changing rooms but the main locker room areas are closed off for the remainder of the year. I'm happy to provide a full refund or waive your joining fee and first months dues should you wish to rejoin was the project is coming to a close. - Drew
Negative experience: I’m new to the area and trying to find a gym to acclimate and meet new people. This is legit peak insanity. The place seems solid and has resources but my god do they make it seem very clear they don’t want customers. $70 a month and don’t allow you to even try the gym out paid or free for a day?! Never have I seen a gym do this and on top of that they offer a “lower price” membership for like $40 but you can only use the gym 4 hours between 12pm-4pm? God forbid you have a job. I mean call me crazy but it seems like they have too many customers and these prices and restrictions are reflecting that they want to get rid of some and negate getting anymore new customers? Maybe it’s just me trippin but this is actually insane lmao. I don’t mind paying a little more if it’s a nice gym and all that but $70 seems like legit robbery. I don’t want any fancy bells and whistles I want to play ball and use some equipment. More power to them I guess but from a logical standpoint it just doesn’t make sense. I guess having a monopoly over any gym that has courts for sports gives you this type of power. More power to them I guess.
John - Thanks for the review. It is crazy how much it costs to run a full service 70,000 square foot club. Pools, building and equipment procurement and maintenance, property taxes, payroll and payroll taxes all add up. It's simple economics really. It costs us about $68 per month per adult to run a healthy business. Most people spend twice that on morning coffee and don't bat an eye. We aren't for everyone but we offer really great programming, amenities and service for those that choose to afford it. - Drew

Fantastic experience: Great environment to get your exercise experience. Many group classes, small group strength training with a skilled trainer, weight machines, a basketball court that is also used for pickle ball and a swimming pool. The environment feels like family.

Positive experience: I've been a regular visitor to this gym and pool club, and while I appreciate their efforts to improve the facilities – like the recent remodeling of the locker rooms – I find their communication severely lacking. It's understandable to undergo renovations, but why wasn't there any prior notice to inform members about the closure of the locker rooms? Additionally, discovering that the pool showers only have cold water was quite inconvenient especially when you have small kids. These details are crucial for members to plan their visits accordingly. Instead of prioritizing trivial announcements about new drinks or free coffee, I believe the management should focus on communicating essential updates that directly impact members' experiences.
Michael - It's not often that I flat out disagree with someone but in this instance, I must. We had large signs in our Battle Creek lobby area for the last two weeks with a look at the future floor plan, club layout and even some of the new trim that will be installed throughout the project. In addition we post on social media often and sent out several emails giving notice that there was indeed a large scale project on the way and how it would impact members (locker rooms closing). We will continue to update members as to the impact of the project through our digital and physical signs inside the physical location and via our social media and email platforms. Next time you are in, make sure we have an accurate email address and I'd encourage you to follow us on Instagram. Positive experience: The group classes seem fantastic to me, the only not so good thing is that the steam room has a strong smell of dampness and also the women's area smells a lot like dampness and is quite dirty! Regards and thank you for the attention!
Victoria - Thanks for your review and your feedback. I think I know what you are describing regarding the steam room. There are two main reasons that the steam room could smell this way. The first is a lack of cleaning. I'll make sure we are following our protocols but if we are, this shouldn't be the issue (you'd also start to see some pink mold). We do go through a deep cleaning and sanitization routine on a nightly basis after we close. The second reason is when members and guests use the steam or sauna with dirty or sweaty shoes and exercise clothes. It is best to change out of workout clothes and into more swim attire for this very reason. All those smells linger in the those areas after they are used by a person wearing street clothes. Positive experience: Great space. Would like it better if it wasn’t so busy, maybe more machines to work out on. The staff are the best there. I really enjoy being able to bring the kids. I do wish it wasn’t so expensive, feel like you have to be rich to go there.
Brittney - Thanks for your review of the club. We plan to launch a massive remodel and upgrade project at our Battle Creek location in the Spring of this year! The project will include a larger weight room area with more equipment available (we've been motioning usage and we've seen the need). We do everything we can to keep our membership fees low and affordable but there is a cost to running clubs like ours with all the ammentites, classes and programs we offer. Negative experience: I signed up for this gym through Active and Fit Direct for a regular membership. When I went to courthouse to find out how to check in they told me that with my membership I am only allowed to use the gym between 12 p.m. and 4p.m. This was the first time I heard of this limitation and I never would have signed up knowing I could only use the gym during a 4 hour window when I am at work. They will gladly upsell you for an additional $30 a month on top of what you are already paying. The gym blames it on active and fit direct, Active and fit blames it on the gym. Feels very much like a bait and switch.
Tomas - When you enroll with Active&Fit you have access to their fitness network that includes dozens of gyms in Salem/Keizer and more throughout the surrounding areas. I can't recite chapter and verse what the various offerings are but I do know that there are a few that are truly no cost above and beyond what you pay Active&Fit. We do provide a no cost option like you mentioned from 12p-4p. For all hours access we do charge $30 per month. If you saw advertising anywhere that led you to believe that Courthouse was "free" for the fee you pay Active&Fit, please let me know. Active&Fit provides "free" access to some gyms around town but I'm willing to guess that those facilities are already less expensive with few amenities, programs and class options. I hope you haven't heard anyone from Courthouse try to play the blame game. No one is to blame, it's just simple economics. To provide service to a club like ours there is a cost. Active and Fit covers a portion of that but not all of it. The remainder of the cost is passed along to you the consumer. Currently that means you pay $28 to Active&Fit, $30 to Courthouse and you save $7 per month. - Drew

Negative experience: If 0 stars was a possibility I would have put that. I am not a member but I do pay $10 to go occasionally. It seems 9 times out of 10 I get stopped by someone who works there to see if I paid(I always pay). I am an Asian woman and it seems lots of people that go to the gym are white. I try to not let it get to me, but it got to the point where I felt almost targeted for being a different race. If you want to feel put down, stared at while lifting, & racially profiled then this is your place.
Jasmine - I'm sorry your experience has left you feeling this way. Guest registration is particularly important as we look to mitigate issues related to club abuse and theft. Knowing who is registered and checked into the facility helps keep these issues to a minimum. I'm curious, is it Courthouse staff that are putting you down, staring at and racially profiling you? Having security cameras throughout the facility has made claims like this easy to verify or dismiss. If you were able to give me a little more information, we could easily get to the bottom of this. Positive experience: This gym used to be a real gem. The owners have been letting more and more maintenance and repair slip on by though. From the huge rusty vent sprinkling red dust over the hot tub to the broken handicap shower poolside to the numerous broken showers, doors, and fixtures, and so on.. It reminds me more and more of a run-down YMCA. Would be nice to see them invest more in fixing things, rather than worrying about putting in fancy new security gates to walk through like it's an airport.
JC - Thanks for the review. Good news; we are currently finalizing plans to make some much needed and major updates and upgrades at our Battle Creek location. If you've been to our South River Rd or Lancaster locations, we just completed similar projects at those sites and we plan to bring a similar look and feel to our Battle Creek club. We'll continue to keep up with day to day maintenance and cleaning but some of the more major items (like the locker rooms) will be completed with our renovation. Fantastic experience: My home club which I visit almost daily. I believe this is the best equipped gym in Salem. I love the variety for my fitness needs. Good prices and the convenience of multiple locations which include outdoor pools and racquetball.
Negative experience: They made it nigh impossible to cancel my membership. They also can change how much they charge you at will and charge a cancellation fee. Also, the gym is in serious need of renovation. They were fixing some things but seemed to just stop. The sauna was always broken for example. Wouldn't recommend.

Fantastic experience: staff and facilities are great, usually not too crowded, a little bit pricier but you get access to extra stuff to make it worth it (basketball court, weight room, sauna, pool, spa)
Negative experience: Is scheduled for a remodeling and could desperately use it. Was once a wonderful gym is now dirty and in disrepair. Don't ever leave your things unattended, don't use their provided coat racks. Your things will get stolen. People will have phones out in locker rooms when you're changing despite posted signs, and staff do zero when reported. One day had a group of elderly men escorted to the womens showers because "they didn't have any male staff on shift." And that "it was okay they had dementia and didn't know what was going on." Women in the locker room and showers were given zero warning. Some wonderful staff but sadly some staff you'll hear openly make fun of members working out or what they wear. Childish atmosphere provided by the the older staff in the building, sad really. Contracts are designed to last too long, and once mine is up I will gladly be leaving for a better priced, cleaner gym.

Just so you are aware, we installed gateways at our Keizer location in part to deal with issues revolving around theft and club damage. Preventing people from sneaking in has really cut down issues with theft at our Keizer location. Based on the success there, we plan to install Gateways at every location this Fall. In addition, we have completed renovation plans for our Battle Creek location and we hope to start a major remodeling project in the Spring/Summer of 2024. Positive experience: TVs in the cardio area are constantly tuned to Fox and CNN. Too much political distraction when the focus is fitness. Would much rather see sports and activities tuned. 3 stars until this changes.
Mike - You and me both. If you know of a way to restrict TV access to certain channels of choice, I'd love to learn. We do try to make a best practice of resetting TV's to ESPN and other sports channels a few times through out the day. - Drew

Negative experience: I have been trying for a month to get their volleyball coach and corporate to call me back. No one has called back. My daughter had her heart set on playing with their Southside league. Very poor customer service.

Fantastic experience: I love the courthouse! Great pool, excellent classes, wonderful and friendly staff. There are great incentives throughout the year with free guest passes and raffles. I love how a membership grants you access to any courthouse and any classes without having to sign up in advance for it. Just show up, jump in, and enjoy!

Negative experience: Seems odd that they are suddenly ripping away the privacy we had with shower curtains. One of the few gyms I felt comfortable showering at because for once we were given privacy.
Hey Mike - I'd like to better understand your concern. I was just at our Battle Creek location today and the situation in our locker room hasn't changed. We still have private dressing rooms in the pool area and a private stall in the locker room. As is the case with many of our clubs we have privacy was in between shower stalls but in the main area we do not have curtains. Let me know if I'm missing something or if you were referencing something else. - Drew

Fantastic experience: Staff are really nice. Always greets us as we enter the club and always a nice goodbye also. Love the wadding pool for me and lap pool for my son. Lap pool can get crowded so plan to get there early. Always clean and I feel confident that they maintain high standards for mitigating the virus as much as possible. People comply with mask mandate so that is a positive.
Negative experience: Friendly staff but the gym is poorly set up for a well rounded workout. The smaller yet more therapeutic tools are disregarded. The mats in the weight room are dirty and falling apart and so are the therabands. These things are rather needed and they never followed up on the request to replace them.

Shout out to Lucas who goes above and beyond and is always so welcoming and helpful! Also shout out to Michelle, Heidi, Jesse, and Juli - some of the super talented instructors there :)
Fantastic experience: I joined recently and have been so impressed with not only the gym itself but how well I’ve been treated by the staff. Every person there has been so accommodating and goes above and beyond. I’ve had multiple people already remember my name, and a few told me to let them know when I need help with form. I’ve also noticed it’s kept extremely clean, and social distancing guidelines are being enforced. I’m so glad I signed up!

Fantastic experience: My child takes swim lessons and they're fantastic. He actually gets a membership renewal for every Christmas from his grandparents who are regular attendees. I also applaud the courthouse for staying open and available for patrons to continue improvements on their health. In a pandemic that mainly affects obese, diabetic and people with not a lot of cardiovascular health, it's a no-brainer to keep the gyms open at all costs. Also there's a mental health crisis that is improved by access to fitness facilities. So, thank you, Courthouse, for standing up for the health of Salem residents, for preventing the spread by helping people stay out of "vulnerable demographics".
Fantastic experience: Don't let the medical tyrants keep you down!!! What could be better for fighting the so-dangerous-99.9%-of- people-will-be-totally-fine Corona virus than encouraging people to remain healthy by exercising!? What could be worse for people and their immune systems than destroying their livelihood, causing immense amounts of unneeded stress, and forcing people to remain indoors and inactive? These restrictions are NOT for anyone's benefit but the ones at the top who don't have to follow the same rules as us normal folk who aren't in their special little club.

Fantastic experience: Great gym!! Perfect for individuals or families!! I love the yoga classes, absolutely the best atmosphere here!! Great selection of equipment from rowers to weights to TRX, even a pool!!! They have classes, a weight training area, cardio studio, clean locker rooms, welcoming and knowledgeable staff. It's perfect for anyone who wants a nice place to work out. I highly recommend it!!!!

Fantastic experience: I normally go to a different gym but bought a temporary pass to the Courthouse b/c of Governor Browns lockdowns.. I’m so thankful to the Courthouse for being open! They are doing a huge service to the community by staying open and keeping people mentally and physically strong! I see a lot of older folks there and you can tell it’s their daily routine. They’re their to exercise, get out of the house and see friends. Please stay open, we need it!
Negative experience: I guess COURTHOUSE has a DOUBLE MEANING, doesn't it?!?!? FOLLOWUP: DON"T SIGN ANYTHING WITH THEM, THEY WILL TAKE YOU TO COURT!! I broke my foot, my wife got an infection in her hand, we were physically unable to use the facility. They not only didn't let us out of the agreement, they SENT US TO COLLECTIONS. --------------------- Always clean, especially during COVID! Staff is always friendly, and we are glad we did the 18-month thing!!! We plan on renewing!! Also, making sure my 5-star review offsets that SJW's 3-star review for trying to make a living during the COVID. Perfectly fine to go to Black Friday, but have 7 over for Thanksgiving? Our COVID-10 protocols make no sense in Salem!!!

Fantastic experience: I love the courthouse I’ve been going for 5 years now and have no desire to change or stop staff is always super friendly and helpful! I always feel welcomed in the place. During the pandemic they have taken extreme caution making sure we all have proper safety and sanitation access not only do i see staff cleaning while working out members are as well and mask are required courthouse has done a good job at meeting the safety sanitation protocols for covid-19 and i will continue my fitness journey here thanks courthouse!
