Positive experience: The IOP program at Focus in Knoxville was truly life changing for me. I was at the lowest time in my life when I joined and I left feeling like I had discovered a whole other side of myself that I could have never imagined if it weren’t for the program. It breaks my heart to hear that the Knoxville location will be closing, especially as someone who attended IOP while going to college at UTK. There is a limited amount of resources on campus and if I had not found out about Focus I most likely would have drowned in my ED and poor coping habits. Im hopeful that students at UTK will be able to receive the care and professional help they need but am also saddened to know it won’t be through Focus. I am forever thankful for those who have helped me along the way, specifically Kaitlyn and Missy, but also everyone else in the office.

Negative experience: DO NOT under any circumstances take your child/teen, (or yourself for that matter) here. PLEASE TRUST ME.

Positive experience: Vickie, Missy and Tomorrow are great!!!!! I loved them! They really care about you and your recovery. Tami is on top of everything and knows her stuff. One thing I am a little surprised about is that once I have discharged no one has reached out to me to see how I’m doing or to see if I’ve made my appt with my outpatient therapist, psychiatrist and dietician. That’s kind of a bummer I thought they would put more effort into follow up care than that but no worries, I’m handling it. Overall a good experience. A word of caution: don’t let yourself get enmeshed with another person and their recovery. Focus on your recovery and don’t allow others to take take take from you.

Negative experience: A recollection of things that happened to me over the course of being admitted here twice: •Was told my weight when they demanded I be sent to the ER. My weight was, obviously, never to be disclosed to me. I will now forever know my lowest weight ever at the height of my eating disorder. I have not known my weight ever since. •Dietician told me the calorie amount another patient was on •Calories on nutrition supplements were not marked out •Dietician asked patient at meal if she “preferred to drink her calories today instead of getting to eat them” •Dietician did not allow stress balls at meal because “toys were not allowed” •Therapist informed me when I was gaining weight versus losing •Dietician told me they purposefully added extra calories to the meals prepared at my residential facility •Therapist had a patient describe in detail their experience with a feeding tube then said, “That’s not what you want right?”

Fantastic experience: As a local therapist that works with clients with eating disorders, I greatly appreciate having access to the wonderful providers and staff at Focus that are able to provide this unique and specialized treatment locally. I have referred clients here for more thorough assessments and that are in need of more intensive treatment services, and have always received great collaborative care with the treatment professionals at Focus. I have also worked with multiple clients for continued care once completing programs at Focus, and have heard praise from these clients about their experience in the program, as well as witnessed the therapeutic tools that they have been equipped with once completing the program. I know I am able to trust my referrals to Focus, due to their integrity in treatment and quality of individualized patient care.

Fantastic experience: The team that Focus has assembled is a rare, beautiful thing. It isn't hard to see the dedication and passion for their craft - the dietitians and therapists alike clearly know the science and research necessary to run an effective program. But more importantly, it is clear that there is a tremendous amount of heart that goes into the work they do... you really get the sense that you matter to the Focus team. Every patient is given individualized attention, treatment modifications, and referrals for additional support as necessary... that kind of work cannot be done without love.

Negative experience: They denied me 2 times for treatment. The first time because of a low BMI the 2nd because the didn't think I was mentally stable. They only want to help people they know will succeed, not people who are struggling. If my BMI was not low and I didn't have a mental illness there would be no reason for me to seek help. They were completely unwilling to work with me on a solution. They lack compassion and understanding of mental illness. I wouldn't waste my time with them after the way I was treated

Fantastic experience: Siri Khalsa-Zemel and her staff have made focus a warm and welcoming center, where the 'focus' is on you. The waiting room and offices are beautifully decorated in a way that invites you to relax and makes you feel calm and cared for. The providers are all well respected and know their stuff. Meryl Kerns teaches a delightful yin yoga class.

Fantastic experience: The staff is wonderful! I can’t say enough about the dietitians and therapists. And now, I do yoga and massage with Meryl Kerns. I was thrilled when Focus added this to their programming. Now, while the Center still has a passion for treating eating disorders, they are also helping to heal from a holistic perspective. I love Meryl’s yoga class. She knows so much about anatomy and asanas (poses), yet she also brings in the emotional and therapeutic side of yoga. She explains how we can connect the yoga practice with our emotional healing. I also have had massages with her, and she is very skilled at that as well.

Fantastic experience: This facility and staff are exceptional! We trusted them to help a dear friend in need of treatment and every step of the process was above and beyond our expectation! The staff made their experience comfortable, private, and took all of the worries from the patient, so they could focus solely on their recovery. The facility itself was warm, inviting and very home-like. I would recommend them to anyone who has a loved-one battling an addiction or disorder.
