Bastyr Center for Natural Health: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Been going to Bastyr for a variety of issues off and on over several yrs. All advanced students have instructors who advise them before, during, and after patient so I feel I get professional treatment at each visit. I highly recommend them especially for issues MD’s have been unable to help with.
Fantastic experience: I really enjoyed my visit recently! Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Dr. Minoff and her students were attentive and patient. Plus because the student clinic has reduced fees I can go more often! I look forward to returning soon
Fantastic experience: In the future, I will not be seeing Dr. Fresonke if I choose to have another women’s health visit. I give 5 stars because I still love Bastry and will continue my holistic care here. As someone healing from past trauma due to abuse, and who shares many similar beliefs and values with the staff I’ve met here, I always looked forward to my appointments. I felt safe and well taken care of, naturally and holistically. That changed during one visit with Dr. Fresonke. She was not friendly toward pro-choice views and spoke to me in a biting tone throughout the appointment. It angers me to see a woman perpetuating the patriarchal abuse we woman have faced for centuries. (I recommend watching “A Little Bit of History of Modern Gynecology” by Denell Barbara Randall on Cervicalwellness.com.) During our appointment, she interrogated me about my sovereign decisions regarding my own body. After I presented her with facts from my research and what had worked for me in the past, she dismissed my points and shockingly "fact-checked" me from her Western medicine perspective, considering where she is employed. When it became clear that this approach wouldn't change my mind, she abruptly left the room while making a loud statement to the staff member at the door, including yet another misleading "fact" meant for my ears. It is dangerous, predatory, and disrespectful when doctors promote the HPV vacxine without first reading the vacxine inserts or sharing that information. Many medical professionals are unaware of the full history of the vacxine, including how it has harmed numerous women, girls, and men, impairing fertility, and causing death. This lack of informed consent denies us the right to make educated choices for our own bodies. Unfortunately, many doctors have been misled in a health care system influenced by big pharmaceutical companies. Fortunately, more women are becoming aware of natural healing methods for HPV. (See Cervicalwellness.com and Learntherisk.org for more information.) During my appointment, I began to feel unsafe, uncomfortable, and anxious, especially knowing that Dr. Fresonke might participate in my exam. I regretted not canceling my appointment right then and rescheduling with a different doctor before she examined me. I am still working on overcoming my tendency to please others and learning to advocate for myself. During my exam, I felt saddened to see Dr. Fresonke speak to her students in a frustrated tone, instructing them harshly. They did not deserve that kind of treatment, and I hope her behavior does not negatively affect her younger students. Fortunately, Rhonda, a staff member I felt safe with from the beginning, assured me that I did not need to do anything I didn't want to after Dr. Fresonke left the room. She listened to my feelings and understood my decision to never see Dr. Fresonke again.
Negative experience: If people care as I do, I was told that none of the staff mask on their own. (Is that a requirement so as not to elicit a "fearful" environment?) The care team apparently will if you request it. But what that tells me is they don't believe in science. And don't allow their people to, or they're under pressure to comply. This is such an unfortunate side to so much of the holistic naturopathic medicine world. Low belief in vaccinations, and clearly they don't care to actually protect their patients if they're not masking unless requested.
Negative experience: Never go here for mental health support. The doctors are not up to date on contemporary ADHD diagnosis or treatment. The doctor I spoke with was truly awful and told me I was, "Going straight to drugs" without asking me a single question about my current management strategies. I sent in an extensive report at the time detailing my experience and with which doctor and never received any follow up or acknowledgement.
Fantastic experience: Continually impressed with my ND, Dr Philp, successfully handling the missed or inadequate diagnosis & non-pharmaceutical remedies that my allopathic doctor has been floundering. Truly a Functional Medicine routine. Not so much impressed with the Nutritionist Department, tho fortunately a nutritionist to follow-up with my primary ND Dr Philp & her above qualified first assistant completely made up for the nutritionists "lameness". It was well worth both trips, mostly my ND Dr. Philps follow up. The more I follow her suggestions is the more my multiple chronic health dilemmas improve for the better. Ya, I'm pretty fed up with allopathic doctors. Well worth the occasional $25 -$35 copays depending on the specialized in-office treatments.
Negative experience: I visited the student clinic and was very disappointed. Bastyr has such a great reputation but my experience was awful. The students were strongly biased and I left very distressed because of it. The doctor in charge was good but was only in the room briefly. I will never go back.
Fantastic experience: I was so impressed by this clinic. I've been to naturopaths and acupuncturists over the years who went to Bastyr, and they have all been excellent. Because I don't have insurance at the moment and try to avoid antibiotics due to previous health issues, I contacted them. I was able to schedule an appointment the day of and found the student doctor to be attentive, incredibly knowledgeable, understanding, and excellent at translating my symptoms into layman's terms. In the evening, when I went to pick up my prescription at my local pharmacy, the pharmacist told me they had no record of my prescription. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Bastyr clinic was still open that late in the evening, and while the doctor I saw was no longer on shift, the receptionist I spoke with contacted the on-call doctor, who was able to locate my prescription and resolve the issue in less than 10 minutes. (The pharmacist hadn't looked in the right spot). All this to say--I am so glad this clinic exists. It's affordable, the doctors really listen to you, and communicate clearly. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: I’ve always had a good experience here with the teaching clinic. My most recent visit was very helpful in diagnosis and receiving physiomedicine care , so grateful to be taken seriously! My only other feedback is that is can be somewhat difficult to make an appointment by phone as they may be busy (try calling a few times at different points of the day). Thank you especially to dr rosica and the phys med team for helping me out
Fantastic experience: Amazing experience at the Bastyr teaching clinic! It was the first place I had acupuncture twenty years ago, and so many years later I am so happy I went back for a whole body reset. I already feel better after only one visit. Thank you Dr. Frieling and student whose name I never got, looking forward to my next appointment :)
Fantastic experience: The entire staff here are amazing!
Fantastic experience: I've been bringing my Dad here for years. First to the student clinic and then we recently switched to the direct practitioner side and now he's receiving acupuncture. Everyone we've seen has been a literal God send during very difficult times in my Dad's health. He's been very relieved to have a natural second opinion and support in the care he's receiving medically. He has nothing but raving reviews after his first acupuncture appointment which brought him great relief. I don't know what I'd do without this place - the senior pricing makes this accessible to my Dad.
Fantastic experience: I have been going here for years! The best!
Fantastic experience: Excellent!
Fantastic experience:
Fantastic experience: I absolutely recommend Bastyr for natural health. They strike a very healthy balance between natural remedies and science based pharmaceuticals and always with the utmost care for your health and the thoroughness you deserve from your Doctor and/or medical team. I've been homeless for a few years and battling several health issues and the team there and students really have gone above and beyond to get me the treatments, care, and resources that I need. They've never looked down on me or treated me differently in any way, but have routinely showed me how much they care and want to help. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic support. Super helpful. I feel so much better after working with them a month, especially considering that I didn't feel better after years with mainstream medicine.
Fantastic experience: Everyone from the front desk to students and doctors very open, pleasant, knowledgeable, supportive and professional. It was a very positive experience and I feel better.
Fantastic experience: This place is Amazing! At least 11 Stars ✨ I always feel comfortable. The students are so nice and the doctors are knowledgeable and effective! Everyone works together so smoothly. I have been coming here for 2 years now and I am completely satisfied with my care! They have exceeded my expectations! I would trust them completely with my children. I simply can't say enough positive things about this place! WOW!
Fantastic experience: This is the best acupuncture I’ve ever had. I just had my first one today and already feel better. Prof. Dr. Aguilar is very very knowledgeable and experienced. After a conversation with me, (which I was amazed by, I’ve never had acupuncturist sat down with me and got to know me first, usually this is in the questioner before your visit, this showed me he cares about what he does) and the acupuncture itself was very smooth. I hardly make any recommendations, but this one is a winner!
Fantastic experience: I recently visited Bastyr Center for Natural Health, and I can't express enough how cared for and listened to I felt throughout my entire experience. From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel welcomed and comfortable. During my visit, the Healthcare professionals took time to truly listen to my concerns and understand my health goals. They shared simple yet effective ways to better care for my overall health, offering valuable insights and recommendations tailored to my needs. I left Bastyr Center feeling empowered and grateful for the experience and knowledge they shared with me. It's reassuring to know that there are Healthcare providers out there who prioritize holistic care and genuinely invest in their patients' well-being."
Positive experience: They had excellent service. Parking was no problem. Very knowledgeable. Only drawback was coming & going traffic
Positive experience: Have visited Jill Fresonke, Kevin Connor and Benjamin Apichai for naturopathic and acupuncture services as needed for several years. I would give these visits 10 stars. Dr Fresonke is professional, personable, thorough and compassionate. Drs Connor and Apichai have provided acupuncture care that resulted in relief in just 3 visits of pain in the neck-shoulder-elbow kinetic chain that had plagued me intermittently for several months. They too were thorough and professional. I have since gone back for acupuncture whenever medical issues linger - bronchitis, stiff neck, tension headaches, etc. - and repeatedly found relief. The administrative staff is friendly and reasonably efficient and the dispensary/gift shop is also a marvelous resource for books on wellness related topics, a healthy snack after your visit, and a variety of environmentally sound gifts and self care products - including a great selection of essential oils. Why not 5 stars? I also saw Sondre Beres for grief counseling a couple of times and cannot recommend - if I reviewed counseling service separately I would give 0 stars. Also, as they are a teaching clinic partially staffed by Bastyr students there are closures during school holidays.
Fantastic experience: Have had really positive experiences. Highly recommended
Fantastic experience: I’ve been coming here now for almost 20 years! After being told from a doctor that I would need to take OTC medication for the rest of my life - I thought there must be a better alternative. I searched around and made an appointment here. At first I I started with the student clinic - which was amazing! I never had received such individual care. With a triage of medical professionals, they were really motivated to find the root and underlying cause for the imbalance that I was experiencing. I found with a holistic approach (not just herbs and diet adjustments, but also practical life reflections, changing routines and adding affirmations too) that I was able to shift where I was and never need to take medication for the issue. I took herbs and adjusted my diet and after a while I repaired and moved on from them. Being totally mindful of what could recreate the conditions and symptoms. Later, I followed the teacher from the student clinic and became a patient of her practice. It’s nice to have more natural ways of combating symptoms, but also to have access to antibiotics if necessary and to really aim deeper into lifestyle choices & our mental space, to aim to shift what’s causing them in the first place :) I highly recommend seeing a well rounded naturopath. Someone that compliments modern medicine, with a more caring approach, who also aims to use the least amount of medications and herbs and supplements, to help you achieve balanced and optimal health. You are looking for an advocate that doesn’t preach but listens and gives sound medical findings for and against whichever options are available, so you can make an informed decision about which medical tools & diagnostics will serve you, while on this lifelong path of whole healing! — Aside from all of that, I will say that over the years, the front desk staff customer service has gone down hill for quite some time now. They do not answer the phone nearly enough, or call back as timely as one would hope. If you get the right person, everything is great. It’s just very intermittent on what experience you’ll have. The doctors and care have been wonderful though.
Negative experience: Here on Google, the hours show it is open, so when I arrived and found it closed, I was not happy. You go to the website and it is closed until Jan 4th 2024. If you need any supplements in the next 8 days, look elsewhere.
Negative experience: I have looked to natuopathic physicians numerous times in my life with many different practitioners and have always had good experiences - until seeing the team precepted by Dr Fresonke at Bastyr. She was awful. Her top-down, non-collaborative, gaslighting manner of speaking to me and the biting tone she used with students was offputting, and after two visits no progress was made other than lab results. She questioned my symptoms, criticized the manner I had been self treating before the visit, asserted I had been prescribed wrong doses of meds by other doctors, and told me to come back for a follow up, stating she would talk with the prescriber to clear it up. At the followup visit, she was unprepared, had not done the research she said she would, and ended up re-prescribing the same over the counter meds id been taking all along. She also took zero interest in my skin change concerns and lectured me about our crumbling medical system when I asked for a referral to someone who could biopsy a risky growth. She made me regret having come to the clinic, and when I looked at the other patient reviews, I was shocked that Bastyr would employ such a person to train future doctors. Thankfully I had a moment with the students alone so I could share my feelings about her before we ended the visit. Patients deserve better than her care. Always.
Positive experience: Ok i really like the office but literally NO ONE is accountable for lost labs. My child and I go to the private clinic and both had labs done at different times over the last 8 months and mine was lost AND I PAID. Have called to complain but no one has ever called me back. I just got a message from our doctor saying she hopes we don't judge the private practice from the Labs issues...like really? How about you make some calls to help me straighten it out? Or have the front desk do this? Anything? Then, my son goes all the way to Seattles Children's Hospital to get a special blood draw that has to be handle a very special way and they mishandled it!!!!! Like how, you have one job!? 4 people it took to draw my then 4 yo's blood - this was the second time trying cause the Lab core in their building messed up and traumatised him so yeah it took a few months to wait and very well planning to get it drawn again....but now i have to put him through this a 3rd time? Ther is compassion at the office but I seriously hope they take a different approach with the labs mishandling blood and causing stress to their patients. A "sorry" doesn't help, helping sort out what is wrong and rejecting the use of those labs until they get better at their jobs is better for everyone.
Negative experience: The doctors are good. The frontdesk, some. A white woman with white hair up to the shoulders were very rude and mean to me. I was polite and she almost wanted to shout to me and raised her voice. It seemed she hated Asian. And, another phone rep of the clinic was also very mean and hang up when I asked her to calm down. The phone rep dare not even told me her name.. These people did not want their jobs there and did not even like the patients. Other phone representaives were better. But at least half are very mean. I do not know why they still work there if they hate the job and people.
Negative experience: I made an appointment for acupuncture over 2 weeks in advance with a specific provider. I took the day off for the appointment. 15 mins before my appointment, I received a call telling me that my provider cannot give me acupuncture treatment because she is too busy but she can still see me (?!). I was told that the clinic only realised 10 mins before my appointment that I was going in for acupuncture, and they just did not have enough acupuncture staff that day (although my provider, who is an acupuncturist, can still see me for non-acupuncture treatment? I don't know what to say).
Fantastic experience: Dr. Shaff actively listens to you and all of your concerns. I'm blown away by how much actual care goes into each visit. After decades of traditional turn and burn doctors (in one door and out the other in 15 minutes without anyone so much as looking you in the eye), I feel blessed to have found Dr. Shaff and the wonderful staff at Bastyr. I highly recommend them!!!
Negative experience: I came to the teaching clinic to address a red rash on my face that had been present for a few months. The student doctors were really nice, but i was pretty frustrated with doctor rubenstein. The rash was covered by my mask and he asked me to pull the mask down very briefly and observed it from afar. He didn’t take a close look or do any cultures. He said that it was due to stress, grief and my diet, so he put me on an elimination diet and advised me to buy a bunch of supplements. As the weeks went on and nothing was changing, I decided to get a second opinion from another doctor at a different medical center. Within seconds of taking a close look she said it was probably a staph infection so she took a culture to send to the lab. Sure enough, it came back positive. The rash went away within days with an antibiotic topical cream. I am all for holistic solutions which is why I chose Bastyr in the first place, but to have the doctor barely assess the issue before coming up with a solution is extremely problematic in my opinion. I can’t remember the other doctor’s name that I had in the past but it was also a guy that just basically took a lot of time to explain things to me that I already knew in a tone that felt like he was just trying to assert his knowledge on things that I feel were pretty basic. I don’t know, super weird and lame. I have lost trust with the teaching clinic and don’t recommend it.
Fantastic experience: My personal experience here was honestly better than I had expected. I've been struggling with my health for almost a year now, relying solely on the support and expirence from others like me online and through groups without any help from doctors. They listened, they were knowledgeable, did not gaslight me not once, I was given a treatment plan that correlated to my specific condition. On top of all this the staff, students, everyone I interacted with were genuinely just very kind. I'm greatful to have been referred here, thank you guys
Positive experience: I would give this clinic 5 stars once they'll get their front desk people organized. Phone calls don't get answered and if you're on hold, they'll hang up on you. Scheduling is a mess. Communication is disorganized and this lack of office organization has done significant harm to me and my family. Most doctors are wonderful here and that's why I keep coming back. The front desk is a nightmare.
Fantastic experience: I love this medical facility. The doctors and workers are fantastic. The parking lot is quite small, their employees should be parking in their designated locations. This employee van in the picture I have posted, I have seen her countless times park in the patient parking area, with two highly aggressive dogs in the back of her van. Not only is it cruel and unethical to leave dogs in a van for her entire shift, it’s unfair to us patients coming to seek medical treatment which have to resort to street parking when the garage is full.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been so thrilled to discover my health insurance covers care at Bastyr. In only two visits we’ll really after the first visit they made a world of difference for me.
Fantastic experience: It’s a great place for acupuncture.
Fantastic experience: They give you the best VIP treatment. Really listen and care.
Fantastic experience: Had my first visit wit Allison G. She was so friendly , prepared and thorough! Really recommend Bastyr and its discounted rate of $35 per visit for seniors! I brought my bag of supplements to go over and she was great! Already going back next Friday for my pap . Thanks Bastyr ! You guys ROCK!
Fantastic experience: I was seen by Dr Ding, her staff ND (whose name I didn’t catch but she wears great blue glasses, ) and her student at the Chinese Medicine Clinic for post COVID treatment. Everyone was incredibly supportive, patient, listened carefully, and answered my questions. I started the herbs today and am looking forward to feeling better with their help!
Fantastic experience: I absolutely love this place. They were the only ones who actually could help me.
Fantastic experience: This was my first experience interacting with a student clinician during a medical visit and my very first Telehealth visit and I am so highly impressed. The visit began on time and the directions were very clear in regards to how to connect for a Telehealth appointment. I am especially impressed by the professionalism and the wealth of knowledge displayed by the student clinician who assisted the visit. I left my visit feeling very understood and cared for by both the doctor and student clinician. I highly recommend the Bastyr Center for Natural Health.
Fantastic experience: I just want to express my heartfelt gratitude for my entire first time patience experience. From my arrival at check in, the 2 ladies were absolutely amazing. Cheerful and very supportive. Started my visit with welcome and laughter. The care team was very thorough and attentive. I felt and was assured in the teams care plan. To round off my appreciation, the dispensary staff was welcoming and accommodating with their provision of my order and considerate smiles. I have found a place of care and true medicine. Employed and empowering staff to care for all. Thank you.
Negative experience: Just had my very last phone call with this health center. I will not be a patient there. The appointment scheduling staff is across the board, undertrained, lack knowledge about their own systems (my chart), Rude, misinformed and condescending. I've tried several times (waiting months in between and I have not been able to schedule an appt. 1x in over a year due to conflicting information from 1 staff person to the next. I even had 1 phone scheduler (i'm not sure what their official title is) tell me to email my medical records through gmail to his email address to upload. I told him that is not secure and he said, "don't worry about it, i'll just scan and delete it. He had no clue about protocols about PHRs, HIPPA or how identity information gets stolen when sent through unsecured means. Today was the final straw when the rude person told me I only had behavioral health coverage, and wouldn't let me get a word in edge-wise to explain that that is incorrect, then said i was yelling at her. Health starts w/ that very 1st contact, and if your front-end staff are stressing people out, it doesn't bode well. Oh yeah, did I mention I actually moved to Seattle b/c they have a Naturopathic teaching clinic? It's true. I also lived in Portland for 16 years during which time I filled 4 paper charts worth of visits (yes, it was that long ago) to NCNM (now NUNM)and never once did I have a single issue or rude person or conflicting information being given to me. It's not me, Bastyr, it's you!
Fantastic experience: The student./faculty team of Dr Elabbadi take excellent care of my health concerns and spend the time to address all the details so i can experience optimum health throughout the different stages of life. They cheer me on and encourage me. This gives me the confidence to follow their direction and properly take care of myself. No “well you are getting ready older. You need to accept the symptoms of aging.” We have mutual goals for wellbeing and aging well. I feel terrific and I am very grateful!
Fantastic experience: Bastyr is the best possible solution for any health needs. I waited twenty plus years for Bastyr to be covered by health insurance and am so glad they are! The doctors are exceptional, dedicated, serious, caring, and responsive. Their efforts are data-driven and take into consideration my entire life, body, and needs. They always listen, hear me, ask, recognize feedback. They *always* have *time.* Thay have a broad repertoire of treatments to draw on. I trust them to help me to work with my body to heal and to be healthy. I'm so grateful to Bastyr. Grateful that they can be my primary care physicians!
Fantastic experience: Best care experience I’ve had in my life. I use the student center, so I have a really great doctor (Dr McKenna) and a team of a couple masters-level students with 3-4 yrs experience. I feel spoiled with all the attention and it’s pretty awesome having a team of people who can work together with different approaches and ideas to brainstorm best care for me. 4 heads are better than 1? lol. They all listen attentively and BELIEVE me which is unfortunately rare in medicine. I love the way they approach the whole body/mind as a complete system rather than separate parts. And focus on natural approaches to treatment but still utilize medications as needed. I couldn’t ask for better care.
Fantastic experience: This review focuses on their pharmacy and supplements section. It has an amazing selection of high quality products and has been a saving grace in naturopathic healing. (Just be sure to call ahead as the winter hours are not accurate on Google maps.)
Positive experience: I love the clinic, their mission and how well they treated me as a patient. I had some insurance issues that kept my review from being 5 stars. I don't blame Bastyr for this but it was pretty stressful.
Negative experience: I had an awful experience with a front desk. I called to schedule an appointment and they would put me on hold and hang up. I would call back and a new person would say absolutely new contradictory information about availability. I spoke with Lynda and she said I need authorization but she made me feel like it is my job to get it done and she sounded like she did not want to get it. She was very rude and not helpful. Another gentleman was nice but he said he was new and did not know how to schedule so he transfered me to a more experience lady and i wanted to give her a feedback and she said she doenst want to hear it and I should not call her back, she hanged up. This is very unprofessional, awful customer service. I have not been there for a year but things got so bad and awful. I tried to call back and talk to somebody who knows what they are doing and can schedule an appointment but they would hang up on me. How awful. It sounds like they dont want to work.
Fantastic experience: Great location with free parking.
Fantastic experience: I have been going to the Clinic for a year now and am so impressed with the care and knowledge of the doctors and students. Dr Samantha Evans specializes in Parkinson Disease. She has so committed to my healing, answers all my questions and explains things in a way that I can understand . She doesn't lose her patience (or patients)!
Fantastic experience: Definitely Family friendly. Affordable. If your interested in getting to the root of the problem and willing to make healthy lifestyle changes this is the place for you.
Fantastic experience: All involved were very friendly, thorough and intent on providing thoughtful care.
Fantastic experience: The practitioners helping me with Acupuncture treatments at the Bastyr Center are exceptional. They truly encompass what you want from a medical professional; kind, compassionate, and listen diligently to come up with a proper plan for treatment. It is a teaching clinic and you will have students working with you, however everything is supervised by licensed professionals as well, and the students here care a lot about what they are doing to become better practitioners. I highly recommend giving it a try.
Fantastic experience: Medicare doesn't cover natural medicine to which I've been accustomed for many years. Thankfully, Bastyr has a program catered to seniors living on fixed incomes. My health concerns were addressed in depth. What I particularly appreciate from medical staff is their desire to get to the heart of the symptoms and not just handed an Rx. The other thing I appreciate is we are not limited to a 15 minute appointment as is the case in so many medical clinics. Thank you, Bastyr! You're the best.
Fantastic experience: After coming highly recommended from two different people my husband and I both set up primary care here. I can’t even begin to express the level of gratitude for everyone here! After shaky medical experiences in the past at other places I mostly lost my trust in western medicine, especially after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for care. But the approach here was a big awakening for me and my husband, we are so grateful to have found the team at Bastyr. And the dispensary inside (not mj) is great also.
Fantastic experience: These students and instructors are careing and qualified Try them out you will be well taken care of!
Fantastic experience: Bastyr is a gem of our local area! I use them for my primary care doctor, as they have naturopathic practitioners. I see Dr. Winship, he is pretty amazing! Very thoughtful in his approach to health and medicine in a way that balances both natural and conventional practices. I’m super pleased with my experience with Bastyr and highly recommend! My insurance provider is in-network for them so it is an easy choice!
Fantastic experience: Excellent Naturopathic Clinic
Fantastic experience: Dr and students are AMAZING! and the fee is reasonable. I get a discount for being low income. Dr. Really cares and is doing so much to find help me. Communication is great over mychart and phone. Desk staff are not the best. Not warm and welcoming like i am used to at ND offices.
Fantastic experience: Great clinic. Best to find a supervisor you like and follow them through the students for any branch of the medicine they offer.
Negative experience: Initially went for a flat-fee special for an Ayurvedic consult. They spent nearly 3 hours with me, and were very thorough. Great, caring, and listen well. As my symptoms worsened within a month after my visit, I decided to schedule another appointment, but when I called, it is impossible to make an appointment and know how much the visit will be. "It can range from $29-250", I was told. Even though I would be paying out of pocket, I will be mysteriously charged afterwards, based on whatever the doctors code for my reason of being there, and based on insurance billing codes. Again, I would be paying out of pocket, not dealing at all with insurance, and I was clear about this on the phone. For example, I could be charged more for the sniffles than a stomachache? If you are trying to bring non-western medicine to the area and circumvent the disaster of the US medical system, at least make it accessible and forthright, without catering to the insurance companies in the same way that every other industry does.
Fantastic experience: Love everything about it and what it stands for ✌
Fantastic experience: The experience has been the stuff of Miracles. I am so grateful for the treatment regimen.
Negative experience: It's snowing. I'm ready for my acupuncture appointment. You're closed. You didn't call me to cancel. Bad form, Bastyr.
Fantastic experience: Professors, doctors and students are all very professional and focused on patient care.
Fantastic experience: Staff and students were caring and supportive of me and each other.
Fantastic experience: Excellent medical care. The student clinicians are just as professional and detailed as their staff doctors! Thoroughly a clean, thoughtful, collaborative, and positively healing environment.
Fantastic experience: After seeing many specialists regarding SIBO and other digestive issues, in Allopathic Medicne and a Naturopath (Naturopathy helped to an extent ), I finally found out about Ayurvedic services at Bastyr. The treatment given by Dr Dhru, Dr Dean and the student in training Rosalie was fantastic. I never felt hurried and has always been explained why they are asking me to follow a particular diet or take particular medicine. They also suggested a series of Ayurvedic massages for detoxing and that really helped with my issues by about 80%. Jody and Trish, the massage therapists were absolutely sweet and I never felt so nurtured or taken care of before. I would recommend changing your lifestyle according to Ayurveda for your chronic problems and enjoy a longer and healthier life.
Negative experience: Be careful with the smooth talking. He'll ask you a bunch of questions to understand if your diet has anything to do with your problem. He'll then step out for a little bit to go find the right 'tool'. And then finally he'll begin look at your problem. I spent 1h45min (not in the waiting room, but in his office) just to get my ears checked out for ringing in my ear. While he did attempt to remove some wax (unsuccessfully), it felt like I was in there forever. Oh, then he'll also speak to you about how he's moving to a new office and how he won't take insurance at his new office. He ended the session by saying he couldn't tell what was wrong with my ear. That whole experience is costing me $134.
Fantastic experience: Best acupuncture and crainial sacral appointment I've ever had. I've seen many students and all of them are empathetic and good listeners. I always feel like I'm going into a safe healing environment.
Fantastic experience: I am very glad I finally went to Bastyr. I had heard of it for years but never took the time to go although several friends told me about their successful treatments. I'm very happy with my treatment results. Theirs is the most effective treatment I have had for plantar fasciitis although I had seen three traditional doctors for several years. I love the thorough interviews with a team of persons in a variety of fields. I love being able to interrupt whenever necessary. All of my questions were answered with the greatest of patience. Their questions led me to a test which may have saved my life. The nutritionist was an unexpected plus. I wish I had gone earlier. One visit may be all you need.
Positive experience: I came here for advising. The program cost was expensive but campus is gorgeous.
Positive experience: I have come here for accupuncture weekly,. Staff us always cordial and practitioners know their syuff.
Negative experience: I had the worse experiences here of my entire life. I went to the teaching clinic because that was the only way my insurance would cover it. I came here because I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis and Hypothyroidism. The first time wasn't horrible, but they completely ignored me when I tried to tell them my symptoms began before pregnancy and kept shoving my TSH test results in my face despite the fact that my active thyroid hormone was twenty points below the bottom of the reference range and I was barely functioning. I decided to give them a second chance when a Hashimotos specialist I follow on facebook said he did a lecture at Bastyr. I made an appointment specifically with a resident who supposedly specializes in treatment of thyroid. What a joke. First of all they put in the notes from my last appointment that my symptoms were all from pregnancy. I had to tell them yet again that my symptoms began well before I ever got pregnant. The resident didn't even let the students finish taking my more recent information before she busted in the room. She stood there with a smug smile on her face with arms crossed while the student tried to tell me that the natural medication I had been taking is what was causing my body to attack my thyroid. When I said that that made absolutely no sense whatsoever, since my thyroid antibodies were LOWER than they were before I ever started medication, the resident cut me off to say that Natural Dessicated Thyroid medications NEVER WORK. For anyone. Even if people feel fine for awhile they always end up needing Synthroid. When I started to tell her that an online group of thousands of thyroid patients would disagree with her, she actually put her hand in my face and shushed me. From that point on, I was not able to finish a single sentence without this woman interrupting me and trying to talk over me. I was interrupted at least 15 times as I collected my things and left. This place has absolutely no business trying to treat any person with a thyroid problem, and should consider removing "Natural" out of "Bastyr Center for NATURAL Health" since natural medication is so horrible. The icing on the cake was when I emailed the office manager about my experience and all I received in response was "Thanks for the feedback!" McDonald's knows how to treat people better than this place.
Fantastic experience: Intelligent caring people that want you the best you can be. They actually listen. My Dr. even calls me to check up on me, how things are going, medicines working, etc. She will think about things discussed in an appointment and call to let me know about a new idea/plan. Its not someone taking notes and walking away, they are really invested in their patients. My friend goes to their sliding scale clinic at the Edmonds Washington at the Senior Citizen Center on Wednesdays. She really loves it.
Fantastic experience: Excellent treatment, professional curtosy, and comprehensive evaluation. Thourough factfinding, open-minded appraisal of individual needs for healthy option have me grateful for taking the suggestions that brought me to Bastyr.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful resources. Excellent staff.
Fantastic experience: Excellent and knowledgeable Doctors and staff. They are very helpful and go the extra mile to find out what is wrong with you. I highly recommend this place to everyone.
Negative experience: Every time I go there they mess up my mothers order. They have given her wrong medication, or they give her 1/2 of what her order is. The price is expensive!!☹️
Fantastic experience: Great alternative to Western medicine or as an add on to treatment you are already going through. They don't push things on you and let you go at your own pace towards healing and making yourself feel better. They take a ton of insurance which was a pleasant surprise and for the services that can't be covered they offer a sliding scale for payment which is nice of you are on a fixed income. The students are all very pleasant and easy to work with and the supervising doctors always take time to go over all treatment plans and talk with you as well. I would recomend this to anyone looking for options in taking care of themselves.
Negative experience: awful! cked the website 2 times on different days, including today, to make sure of the hours u were open. drove from south seattle to p/u a prescription only to find a tiny sign saying closed for inventory. come on u guys....this is the new world of environmental concerns, respect for everyones time......etc,etc. keep ur friggin website updated. think abt the environment and others wasted time and energy when u dont. r u just another corporate entity out there now w/ disregard for the people u serve.
Fantastic experience: Have been taking my son here for a couple months now, he is successfully being treated and improving! Dr. Yarnell is a fantastic well educated ND! He actually takes the time to listen and plan out any treatments with his patients :) our appointments usually last an hr! Not anything like a MD who's In and out and has left you with some sort of pill to ingest! Also like that I can go directly down stairs and get the needed medication, very convenient!
Fantastic experience: This is the leading naturopath teaching clinic in the country and it depends on which clinic you go to see (Naturopathic, Acupunture, Chinese Medicine) but the visits are almost an hour long and very thorough but it is a teaching clinic so you will be seeing students before the attending (they also have a private clinic as well int he same building). They are ND's so if you have never been to one before you need to be aware that there are different "styles" and it might depend on which attending you get what they will focus on. The majority of visits try to keep you healthy vs treating an acute problem so the focus is on nutrition, lifestyle, stress etc (they also have a short term counseling) and it is a great resource for people with chronic conditions. Be aware that they don't take all insurance and it can cost as much ($200 for ND but only $40 for acupuncture) or more than a regular doc visit (which average 8 minutes vs an hour) but in WA state all insurance co's are required to cover ND's so you will at least get some coverage. They have the highest patient satisfaction scores in the Puget Sound region (according to Puget Sound Health Alliance) and I have always felt well taken care of there but still see my MD for some of my care.
Negative experience: Horrible experience, my husband waited 45 minutes for them to say he had "fatigue" and they gave him a different doctor than we originally schedule for, without telling him until his appointment. Then they wanted to charge a ridiculous amount for all their natural medicine, which we found at Supper Supplements for way cheaper. Then we got a huge bill in the mail!! Ridiculous and very expensive, it is not worth it!!! There are better natural health clinics to go to that are not this expensive.
Fantastic experience: I have had several wonderful experiences here. The people are wonderful, caring and professional. It offers an affordable and alternative way to healing which I highly recommend for everyone!
Negative experience: I had an appointment this morning to have my resting metabolic rate tested. I live up in Bothell, so it's about a 45 minute drive down to Bastyr. As I was almost there (about 10 minutes away) I got a call from the front desk saying they would have to reschedule my appointment because they didn't have the necessary equipment for the test. How is that possible, and why are you only going to notify me of this about 20 minutes before my appointment time?! Considering I had to take several hours off of work to drive down there and back (1.5 hours of driving) for absolutely nothing...I was pretty annoyed. They need to get the stuff together... I couldn't imagine trusting these people with my healthcare if they can't even keep track of their medical equipment. Very unprofessional.
