The Portland Clinic is celebrating 100 years of caring for the local Portland Metropolitan community. The future we are building has been a century in the making. Established in 1921, The Portland Clinic is Oregon’s oldest, private, multi-specialty medical group. Today, with sophisticated medical technology, modern spacious facilities and dynamic medical specialists, a personal approach to each patient’s good health remains The Portland Clinic’s primary focus. The Portland Clinic’s six locations serve the greater Portland metropolitan area and care for more than 90,000 patients each year throughout the Northwest.

Our comment from Nutrifinder.net about The Portland Clinic-Downtown:

The Portland Clinic-Downtown offers a mix of experiences for its patients. Many users appreciate the professionalism and attentiveness of the staff, noting that they feel well cared for during their visits. Numerous reviews highlight the excellent personal interactions with doctors like Dr. Fram and Dr. Hoan, who are praised for their knowledge and compassionate care. The clinic is noted for its quick appointment scheduling and the convenience of having various specialists available in one location, which simplifies the process for patients needing different types of care.

Positive experiences include:

  • Friendly and patient-focused staff.
  • Efficient service with minimal wait times.
  • Easy access to on-site labs and imaging services.
  • Positive and thorough care from various specialists.

However, there are some concerns raised by patients regarding customer service and communication. Several reviews indicate issues with:

  • Phone tree functionality and response times.
  • Billing discrepancies and complicated insurance processes.
  • Some physicians not being as attentive or understanding as expected, leading to dissatisfaction with the care received.

Despite these drawbacks, The Portland Clinic-Downtown remains a popular choice for many patients due to the overall quality of care and the range of services offered.

Negative experience: Their phone tree genuinely doesn't work, i hit the options multiple times and it kicks me back to the first menu. and it's impossible to reach anyone or expect to get a response back

Allysa Roberts 9 months ago

Negative experience: Communication here is absolutely garbage. Was told to call back after a few days if my pain continue, so I called back and finally got an answer on call number two. They hung up when transferring me to the nurse line, and didn't try to call back. I called back two more times and once again never got a call back.

Fantastic experience: I'm somewhat new to the Portland Clinic but so far all my experiences there have been positive. My dermatologist, Dr. Mannino, is terrific and the nursing staff is very accommodating. By using the MyChart app I'm able to review after-visit summaries and check on upcoming appointments. All in all it's been a great experience at the clinic.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Fram is amazing! He is kind, intelligent, and has excellent bed side manner. I highly recommend him to anyone needing a urologist.

Negative experience: Never received a billing notice from them until they sold it to collections. Go elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: The bad news - I suffered a knee injury while playing Handball. The good news - amazing response time at the Portland Clinic. 11:00 am injury. 1:30 pm I was seeing a physician. 2:30 I had office notes, a new brace and x-rays taken, 5:00 the radiologist had viewed the images and I received a written report from the physician on my chart.

Positive experience: Doctors and staff were great, but that’s polity reminds me of a pre-perestroika Moscow infirmary

Fantastic experience: Great staff that is invested in your health. Dr. Ethan Fram (urology) and Dr. Thomas S. Dudrey (Primary Care), the best I’ve ever had. They take time to know you, get acquainted with your health record, and provide careful guidance. I always feel well taken care of.

Fantastic experience: I switched to this clinic (downtown ) 2 years ago after my previous doctor retired, and I’m very happy with it. The facility is nice, check-in is friendly and quick, and Dr Dudrey and the nursing staff are excellent. Communication via MyChart is also excellent, quick responses.

Positive experience: I’ve been going to the Portland Clinic since 2020. Yesterday I was seen by Physician Assistant, Tomorrow Denton. I highly recommend her as a primary care provider for anyone. She was caring & compassionate. She was also thorough in getting testing done & following up on a recent ER visit. She took time to listen, understand & ask questions to clarify my situation.

Fantastic experience: I have been seeing Dr. Crouse at The Portland Clinic, downtown location since 2008. I have always received excellent care through this Clinic. Dr. Crouse, his associates, and medical support staff have always been professional. My main provider for Medical Insurance is Kaiser Permanente. I am very sorry to hear that Kaiser has cancelled there contract with The Portland Clinic due to reorganization reasons. I think Kaiser should rethink this strategy and realize that The Portland Clinic is an excellent In-Network Provider.

Positive experience: Dr Mondragon is not Autistic friendly. The nurse was nice though. She was able to look and see my issue, but not without contradictions and stressing out my system. Would have shut down if it was any other day.

Fantastic experience: Mr. Manimo really knows what he's talking about. He told me to try his plan A. He has a plan B in case plan A doesn't work. So I feel good knowing he has good and smart intentions.

Negative experience: Don’t go here unless you want to be treated like a transaction and not a person. My friend has been suffering for most of 2023 with horrible symptoms and Portland Clinic doctors were not helpful, did not provide real expertise or next steps before demanding more payment. Dr. Choi in particular was useless and after my friend paid thousands for tests, he advised her to take over the counter medicine that didn’t help. She ended up having to seek medical care elsewhere and was diagnosed with a real disease with real follow up treatment. Disgusting behavior from the Portland Clinic you should all be ashamed

Fantastic experience: I simply had a sore throat & wanted a culture. Instead of spending 3 hours in Urgent Care, I spent 15 lovely minutes with a NP who ordered the test. What a wonderful way to streamline non emergency care. I love that TPC is always on the Vanguard of prigress.

Negative experience: I went in for a renal scan ordered by the military, my last renal scan was about a year and a half ago, he didn't even bother to run the actual scan or blood work or labs, just talked to me about my medical history and checked my heart and lungs. He offered to put me on medication (I have no issues requiring medication or anything....I don't even take Tylenol ) as he was asking questions about my medical history, he'd get up and leave the room and come back 3 minutes later....at least twice...very odd. Come to find out, that he did not take accurate notes whatsoever. Everyone else was great. I'm not sure if he was even listening due to the fact that 1. Most of my medical history and time-line of all procedures and whatnot was not inputed correctly, after reiterating that I need to actually get this scan done, he still did not run it. I don't understand how hard it is to listen to patients and to make sure that they get the services they came for, and to make sure my actual information is correct, because of his neglect to input my history correctly, it will be flagged by the military because it doesn't match any of my REAL history which is going to prolong my joining of the military, and I will probably get disqualified. THANKS!

Negative experience: More a business factory than a place of caring doctors or genuine healing. Have had too many shockingly impersonal experiences here both over the phone and personally. How dare you treat your patients as "cogs to be in compliance with" rather than with genuine compassion.

Fantastic experience: My OB is in this office and I was treated great. The office has its own parking lot (for a really small fee) and check in was easy. I was given good directions and barely had to wait to be seen. I have diagnosed anxiety and the staff was so nice that I felt at ease. Thanks Dr. Hoan and Kristina for your hospitality.

Negative experience: I used to have a great doctor here, but everyone I’ve seen in the last few years just talks about how I’m 5 lbs overweight. If I want to talk about something else, doesn’t matter, it just comes back to my weight. When I lost 3 lbs, I was told to lose a couple more. I feel the doctors here have a pretty single minded obsession with weight and it’s exhausting.

Negative experience: I had an appointment here for my 1 year old for 4 months. A couple weeks before the appointment they called to reschedule for another 1.5 months out. This was frustrating, but my baby needed a specialist and this was where we were referred. At the time of the appointment we gave the receptionist my babies health insurance card. We have state health insurance. Upon finding out that we have state healthcare the receptionist informed my spouse and I that they could not provide my baby healthcare because we are on state healthcare. They refused us service and told us there was nothing we could do that would enable us to be seen by their doctors except to get off the state healthcare we are on. We are desperate to see a specialist because our baby could have skin cancer. I offered to pay out of pocket. Money is tight, but I don’t care…it’s my babies health. They still refused to serve us and sent my wife out of the clinic crying. I’m not usually one to complain or review, but I can’t believe that this happened. This company is run by monsters; I can’t think of another explanation why they would actually deny all services to a baby just because of state healthcare enrollment. I know it sounds far-fetched, but I don’t exaggerate here in the slightest….this clinic refuses to serve a baby who may have cancer because he has state health insurance. We didn’t cause any problems or do anything to deserve this. We’re talking about a baby who just needs to see a doctor. Please don’t support this company. They clearly don’t care about the well-being of others.

Fantastic experience: I have had consistently excellent care from Portland Clinic staff in the last 10 years. They have worked me in whenever I've had a problem that needed addressing quickly, and have had most specialists I've needed to see. In spite of post-pandemic staff shortages, they have done a great job.

Negative experience: Unbelievable. This place will go to any length possible to avoid providing care. I got new insurance in September (specifically because I couldn't be seen anywhere with my old OHP coverage) and two different times now The Portland Clinic has just canceled my appointments without warning (the first time after months of waiting) with the only explanation being a voicemail stating "Sorry, because of your insurance we canceled your appointment, try somewhere else". This is despite the fact they have scanned my active Pacific Source insurance multiple times and they specifically vetted my referral from my referring clinic and provider/insurance many months before canceling my appointment the first time when they admitted their mistake, only to do the exact same thing just weeks after rescheduling me. They are clearly just going around looking for any way to avoid giving care wherever possible no matter how it impact's the patients, their lives, their schedules, their wellbeing, etc. I tried to call to talk to someone about it and there were 31 callers ahead of me. I give up. I'll just be starting from square one at another clinic. No matter how you look at it, it's just really bad practice and y'all should be ashamed of yourselves for how you treat your patients.

Fantastic experience: My Dr. Is the best Dr. I have ever had. I'm going through one of the worst experiences of my life. Tramadal almost killed me off this weekend. Couldn't see, had to crawl to throw up in the garbage while have extreme Diarra. Before you even coneimplate taking before researching it. I love my Dr. and he is working with me. The biggest problem is lack of staff or just lazy answering when everytime for yrs you have atleast 9 to 32 people waiting and I have never had a call back. Took 72 minutes, and this is just to start the day. Since we have to rely on muchart which some people don't have a clue how it works. I'm very lucky and willing to wait.

Jenna DePasquale 3 years ago

Negative experience: I hadn't had a general physical doctor's visit in a long time, so I went online to find a provider. Eventually I came across someone here who I thought would be a good fit for me, so I made an in person appointment. The week that it was scheduled, I received a call saying that the provider had to reschedule for two months later, which I agreed to. Finally, the day before my new appointment, I received a number of confusing back-and-forth communications with the office about whether or not I'd have a telehealth appointment instead. I was confused because I didn't know a physical could be virtual, but I just sort of had to go with it. Finally, the meeting comes and the provider is very short with me and seems annoyed that I wanted to see her because apparently she's leaving the clinic soon anyway. She said that since I listed a couple of specific health concerns listed in my appointment notes, this had to be a separate appointment from a physical. I had literally never heard of not being able to bring up general concerns with your doc at a physical before. I left the appointment feeling upset and confused about what I had just experienced. And, of course, this is America, I owed $160 for this ~10 minute telehealth appointment because my deductibles are so high. I was pretty much hounded for the payment. I wish they cared about me as much as they did about money. Meanwhile, my health concerns are still unaddressed and I still have not had a physical.

Aliza Wiedenhoeft 3 years ago

Negative experience: Went in to see Dr. Portnoff for an opinion on a plethora of conditions that had been ailing me for over a year, that easily could have been diagnosed, but instead was left with the impression that I was being discriminated against simply for being on oxycodone for chronic pain. With absolutely no evidence whatsoever, she proudly proclaimed that I must have fibromyalgia (which has no known effective treatment and I have no direct symptoms of) and not Psoriatic Arthritis (which I have mounds of evidence for, and can actually be treated). She didn't even bother to look up my history or get photos from my dermatologist or basically go through anything other than some sort of chiropractic motions to my body which were wholly unwarranted and unneeded. If you think you can diagnose a person with a glance of an eyeball, please see her, otherwise avoid at all costs. The staff were otherwise friendly but I left feeling like I wasted an hour of my life I'll never get back.

Fantastic experience: I’ve had nothing but good experiences here. Scheduling is helpful, doctors follow up, and the response time for anything sent via my charts is really quick. As with any medical practice in the US, you’ll need to ask them and your insurance about billing concerns in advance if you want to avoid surprises. As a nice bonus, they have an on-site lab.

Todd Curtis (T Curtis) 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Excellent provider. Dr, Dudrey at the downtown clinic is a fantastic primary care physician. I’ve been a patient of his for multiple years and have a very positive and informative visit each time. I have a lot confidence with The Portland Clinic and the multitude of medical services they provide. Very little wait time and easy to get an appointment.

Connie Brenner 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: I saw Dr Brasseur, a neurologist at the downtown Portland Clinic. He was fully informed about all the tests that had been done, and listened and responded to the comments I made. He noted that a currently-prescribed medication was unnecessary, and told me to discontinue it. The only negative about the appointment was that 2 ordered blood tests couldn't be done on-site because of lack of lab capacity and the soonest appointment available at my nearest Portland Clinic location was over a month away

Lisa OBrien 3 years ago

Negative experience: I have been going to this lab for years and today I had a really bad experience with a lady wearing a black sweater and hijab. I didn't get her name so I'm using her description. She was not friendly, rushed me to get done and when I told her I didn't need her to tell me what she was doing since I get really nervous she made no comment; just stared at me. I have very good veins and usually never bruise but today was an exception. She put the tourniquet on really tight. She was not careful switching out the vials, and moved the needle around with each one. I have a huge bruise and my arm is black and blue and has been really sore. I was really surprised since I usually have such great care here.

Eileen Deerdock 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Every employee (from the greeter at the entrance to doctors) with whom I've interacted has been warm, informed, and helpful. One exception, come to think of it. Last year, my regular physical therapist was not working (because of COVID, and the woman who "treated" made my severe pain, from my herniated disc that had enflamed the nerve, unbearable. Set me back for a week. Nightmarish. But I continue to go to the Portland Clinic. But would not go for physical therapy, should the need arise, if he--my regular PT-- was no longer working there.

Negative experience: WARNING: This institution screens patients with mental illness to turn them away. I saw Yasmin R. Maldonado-Stitt, MD, for one visit to treat my fibromyalgia I’ve had for 8 years. I just moved to the area and needed to establish care. She took one look at my paperwork and said that she only treats patients that are not depressed or anxious (my diagnoses) because that’s “out of her expertise.” She said she only treats patients that don’t have any other health issues (besides the symptoms they’re experiencing for rheumatology) so that she knows how to treat them and cure/fix them (she gave me an example of one of her patients: stay at home mom that doesn’t work and can dedicate all of her time to her health. Obviously is financially well-off. Must be nice.). She said that she cannot help me and that I have to turn to my psychiatrist and primary to get any medications for my fibromyalgia. When I went back to my doctors to communicate this they were shocked, confused, and then immediately compassionate towards me. My psychiatrist immediately apologized for this experience and said that this doctor has a biased towards patients with mental illness. This is something she has seen many times before (she also has an autoimmune disease so she understands) and she encouraged me to keep looking because she knows how crucial it is for me to get rheumatology care. My primary was first speechless and then really confused. He said, “it seems to me she cherry picks her patients.” My response was “ya it must be nice to have a 100% success rate.” He had never experienced this in his 30 years of experience and ensured me he would help me find the next rheumatologist. Be cautious of this institution if you’re struggling with mental illness. This business model is dangerous for those who are most hard hit by the pandemic and extremely dangerous for our community’s health. Our community deserves medical professionals that operate in the highest-integrity of good-faith. I do not recommend Yasmin R. Maldonado-Stitt, MD, or The Portland Clinic.

Fantastic experience: Staff was extremely friendly, very quick. I’m so used to waiting endlessly in lobbies when I show up in time , but I saw the doctor in almost no time at all. Went right to the labs after again no wait. I had to call to change a prescription and the doctor got back to me that same day. The parking situation isn’t great but hey it’s downtown Portland , I’m not expecting vallet service.

AlexisRF F 5 years ago

Negative experience: In Sept 2019, I went in for my annual exam with Dr Umene. The experience was fantastic from the staff to the doctor. I am a very healthy person and I only go for annual exams because thats the only thing that our extremely FOR PROFIT insurance companies cover at 100%. As part of it, there are tests that are covered since they are preventive. I TAKE ALL OF THOSE! I have been doing this for many years since I was in Chicago through Northwestern Hospital and never had an issue. At the end of this process, I get a bill of $0 every time... until this visit. I received a bill for $10 from labcorp for one of the tests. I immediately contacted billing and they told me that its not covered. I asked why and was transferred to Nicole from patient account/billng. She pretty much told me that she cant do anything about this because labcorp does the billing. We all know that the lab get the codes from the doctor's office. I had to explain this to Nicole so she can contact the office. After a multiple calls, Nicole decided that what was sent by the Portland Clinic was correct and I owe that money, end of conversation. This was a test that I have been getting as part of my annual physical for more than 10 years so I needed to know why all of a sudden things have changed. I contacted Cigna and was fortunate to come across someone who was extremely knowledgeable and kind. She explained to me how those codes work. Lets say you need to get a test for Hep C, there are codes for Hep C that are considered preventive and some that are not. The same exact test but with different codes. She educated me on these codes and it dawned to me that the Portland Clinic probably made a mistake of sending the wrong code to the lab. Cigna agreed to go on a 3 way conference call with me and we contacted Nicole. Cigna explained to her the situation and without even entertaining the possibility of her group sending the wrong code she began to say "I've already talked to this patient and already explained this so I dont know why are we even wasting our time on a $10 payment?" At this point I was so angry with her arrogance and lack of empathy. I said "Yes I know we have talked about this multiple times but I dont think you have done sufficient due diligence to get to the bottom of this. This is not about $10. I have spent countless hours of my time on this issue because I want a proper root cause which I dont feel you have done. I can afford this but some people cannot. Can you imagine paying for something that you should not be paying because someone made a mistake and doesnt want to take responsibility for it and course correct? What if this is $100, $1000, $10,000 or $100,000 mistake which happens in the health care industry so many times. At this point she said, it is what it is and she even added insult to injury by saying. Maybe the Portland Clinic is not the right provider for you. This is all recorded and I have asked Cigna to save the recording. . I explained to her what happened and she listened nonchalantly. Very long story short, she pretty much defended Nicole and said, the money is due. At this point we were communicating through the clinic's patient portal because i wanted to make sure everything was documented. I asked her what code was used and why it was used? She couldnt answer that? Could it be because they made a mistake and are covering it up? Fast forward 2 months, Jennifer told me to expect a letter in the mail which never came so I had to ask her twice but it never came. When I finally got it, it said I have a zero balance. Thats not enough! I need an explanation as to why . I asked to speak with her supervisor/manager, she said, it ends with me! Since when did customer service become a dictatorship without checks and balance. Thanks to Paige who worked with me, we found out that I was right all along. Know your rights!

Negative experience: Just called and the earliest available appointment isn't for 3 weeks. How is one supposed to get treatment if it isn't accesible? I realize this problem is widespread, but that doesn't make it acceptable.

Negative experience: I attempted to get information about the availability of yellow fever vaccine given my planned trip to the Amazon Basin of Brazil. This is noteworthy given the world wide shortage of that vaccine and the fact the U.S. CDC listed The Portland Clinic as one of only three places in Oregon that can provide that service. When I called, the receptionist at the clinic was very unhelpful, apparently agitated and appeared not willing to flush out the issue since I am not an established patient of the clinic. She said I would have to become an established patient before she could answer questions. Speaking with this receptionist was like hitting a brick wall since I was not already in their system. She, however, did offer to schedule an appointment for me to start a process to get established with them but that may or may not have resulted in me getting or not getting the vaccine. I told her that my primary care provider is in Klamath Falls and that it is a 6.5 hour drive for me to get to Portland. Bottom line, if you seek travel vaccines do not go to The Portland Clinic.

Positive experience: First off this clinic had numerous different specialists, so when you read the reviews keep me posted that in mind and don't write off the whole clinic for one person's experience with one specialist. I was very pleased with Rheumatologist Dr. Maldonado. She was patient and through with me. I ask a lot of questions and have a complicated situation. Also, Administrator Susan was very helpful in dealing with a registration misunderstanding I. She took the extra effort to assist me and make sure my appointment was secure. I only have four stars because the building is have old and dingy inside.

Negative experience: I have been through two neurologists, two internal medicine specialists, one gastroenterologist, and one dermatologist. Don't ever go here. The medical care is terrible.

Negative experience: for the travel clinic: I get all of my care here which hah been top notch and deserving of 5 stars . . . BUT if you need a travel clinic go somewhere else, there is only one nurse and if she gets sick the travel clinic closes.

Negative experience: Terrible Service, had to call the office 3-4 times to straighten insurance billing. They made mistakes twice recording the insurance prefix. Took 3 months to get it right, and my time and nerves.

Negative experience: Called for an appt after being referred. No one answered after being transferred to the correct dept, so I've decided to let it ring, going on 20 minutes now. I'm shooting for 3 hours. I've got Focal headphones and Tool in the background. These people don't seem to be interested in taking phone calls, in fact, these people don't care, and it shows. They also tell you in a recording that they have a call back rotation so you don't have to wait on hold, that's not accurate. What they have is a simple voice message system, and it does not appear they have any intention of calling back in a reasonable amount of time, ie, time you would have been on hold. So, your first interaction with the clinic, if you choose to leave a voicemail, will be the result of a not so true assertion. Not a great way to start a relationship IMO.

Negative experience: I saw Dr Manning, he was very short and didn’t try to help at all. He basically said there’s nothing that can be done. I was better off searching the internet for help. I will go to another dermatologist who actually cares to listen and help.

Negative experience: I saw Dr. Sage at the Portland Clinic. I do not feel like Dr. Sage listened to my concerns or had any interest in helping me find a solution to my health problems. She was extremely short and assumed she understood my situation without truly listening to my experiences. I would not recommend her to anyone and am incredibly disappointed with my appointment with Dr. Sage. Please consider visiting a different doctor or clinic. Additionally, the clinic did not give me an account to access my lab results or assist me in creating an account. Incredibly inefficient and disappointing experience start to finish.

Negative experience: The first employee I talked to about establishing care was mostly nice and helpful however, the person who I talked to about pricing of services was short with me and it was very frustrating trying to get even general information. My health insurance has a deductible and I have to pay a percentage still even once the deductible is met so it's important to me to know the price range of services (not even a specific number, I simply asked for ranges). From the information I was given it's much more expensive here for the visits and medical imaging tests I need than other facilities and the less than helpful employees quickly made me realize that I should look elsewhere. On the bright side I've since found a place with better reviews and prices that coincide more with what I thought I'd be spending.
