Our comment from Nutrifinder.net about Jesse Brown VA Medical Center:

The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, located in Chicago, is a facility dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare for veterans. Many patrons have praised the kindness, professionalism, and dedication of the staff, particularly in departments such as oncology and women’s health. Numerous reviews highlight that the doctors and nurses exhibit a caring attitude and offer excellent medical support. The cafeteria is also a point of positive note, with affordable, tasty food options available, tailored to the preferences of patients.

However, some visitors have expressed concerns about certain aspects of the service. Issues such as long wait times, organizational challenges, and instances of rudeness among some staff members have been reported. Additionally, parking can be difficult, and there may be limitations on visitor policies.

Despite these drawbacks, many veterans feel grateful for the high-quality care and support they receive and commend the center's commitment to improving patient experience. There is a genuine effort from the staff to assist veterans, making Jesse Brown VA Medical Center an important resource for many.

Fantastic experience: Jesse Brown VA medical center is in Chicago. People have to pay to park. And will give out a small ticket. IN Which the parking ticket has to be violated. And only 2 visitors can patients. If family members visit family on the fourth floor family has to wear a mask. The food at the café is very good because doctor's and staff can pick what kind of food to eat like if people want a cheeseburgers the staff will cook the burgers and the staff will ask customers do you want French fries and tomatoes and pickles and onions on your cheeseburgers and the price is cheap.

Negative experience: VA Jesse Brown CAFETERIA employee complaint: I was in the cafeteria 8/28 attempting to get several plastic forks out of the utensil despenser when a female who later identified herself as the Cafeteria supervisor ( name tag begain with the letter L) walked over to me. The female stated to me "who does that", referring to me dispensing the plastic forks. I was taken aback by her rude/ blunt comment. She informed me that I could only get one fork and that is only if I made a food purchase in the Cafeteria. She reached into the dispenser catcher and grabbed the forks ( I cannot recall if she was wearing gloves. I do not know if she later put the forks back into the dispenser to be used by others). I asked her where does it state a limit on the forks/ utensils and that there is a purchase restriction ( There is no postings of such in the cafeteria). I also informed the employee that I am a military veteran ( she did not appear phased at all) and I would be reporting her. She then stated to me tell whomever that she is the supervisor. I looked at her name tag which did not have a supervisor designation and the name began with the letter, L and was a bit unusual spelling. The female employee is very dark complexioned, slim build, very short hair and she was wearing a dark maybe black colored uniform like top. I did report her rude behavior.

Fantastic experience: We have been in other VA Facilities and we are so impressed with the amazing Jesse Browm! Staff, volunteers Dr.s communication, kindness, caring, lots of smiles...spotlessy clean. Great directions, happy people everywhere...God bless you all!! GERALD OMalley.

Fantastic experience: Had one of the best experiences from a VA here. It was quick, painless, and everyone was very friendly.

Negative experience: The entrance check point team is always rude, cold, and mean to patients. They gather around and laugh out loud, or star at you with rolling eyes like you don’t belong there. Absolutely no customer service, and poor manner. Many nurses also very rude in the hospital, they don’t greet you, no smile, always cold and mean to patients who suffer from illness and pain!

Fantastic experience: As far as a VA hospital goes, this is a 9.3 out of 10. They have a top notch Oncology department, the entire staff is amazing! One drawback is the parking or lack there of! I always have to park on the roof or use valet parking, especially when I have infusions.

Negative experience: This hospital couldn’t be more judgmental with their patients because the beyond of stupidity level they are right now can’t exceed more than it has already exceed. I am a 20 y/o veteran, who went through MST and tried to get mental health counseling in this place and I ended up being treated like trash. Doctors will put horrendous diagnosis of mental conditions in my chart that I do not even have or had before. When I come to the ER for my seizures and heart condition they would profusely ACUSE ME of making all the stuff up and faking when my vital signs are about to crash. The doctors don’t care for their patients, and the nurses barely do so. More than the half of the staff in this hospital will neglect you even in the point of you actively coding or dying. DO NOT BRING YOUR FAMILY VETERANS to this place, I have witnessed more medical and staff negligence than I could ever in my life in this VA.

Fantastic experience: I went to the women health center on March 18 2024 and i can’t thanks the staff there enough. They were all incredible and treated me with respect. Helping find where the radiology department was, took my next appointment and calling me to confirm my future appointments. The only bump in that was a receptionist on the physical therapy floor who gave me a hard time saying she can’t understand what I was saying. I’m French and still have an accent but I’m completely fluent in English. Otherwise great experience. Thank you for your kindness VA staff.

Fantastic experience: I would like to retract my original review on jashawn weaver due to legal reasons. My original statement was falsified and spiteful due to our dispute which is unacceptable no matter how one may feel. He is a good individual who will go above and beyond when it comes to his career and well as the patients, and is dependable and can be counted on. I once again want to apologize for the rude comment you all have a great employee.

Negative experience: I've been here many times, and every time, they find a new way to be completely disorganized and provide terrible service, if they provide a service at all. They don't keep track of patients (yesterday alone four different nurses came to take my vitals for the same appointment, in the same waiting room, with the same staff) and I heard other veterans complaining about other normal VA problems. Like one dude that was two hours past his appointment time and still hadn't seen anyone. I had a 'short' wait of only an hour after my appointment before I was seen. Usually, I have to plan three hours, for a single appointment. They will not give out community care, if they can avoid it, by intentionally waiting to make appointments, so you won't meet the threshold for scheduling. It's a terrible place, with terrible service, and while most of the medical staff, I believe, truly care, their software, hardware, and processes are so overburdened, with so many patients that they don't have time to handle, that every time I go here I just expect to have a bad time. If you don't just need a blood draw and a lollypop, you'll probably hate it too.

Fantastic experience: I cannot say enough good things about the nurses and doctors at this hospital. I was there for bariatric surgery on 1/8/24 and everyone was so incredibly kind and treated me so well. THANK YOU to the staff here, especially the bariatric staff and Karene Goodman!

Negative experience: The DMVs of Veteran affairs. Every time I leave the VA I wish I never came there. they’re the worst kind of staff imaginable. Judgemental and off putting. Also why not try to find a different vein at this point??

Negative experience: In 2008 I witnessed 4 VA police officers who took a patient for an elevator ride. I will never forget the look the elderly man gave me while he was getting beaten to a pulp and then an officer pushed me away from trying to get on the elevator. I went to patient advocate and the next time I was there I went to the restroom using the urinal and when I finished and turned around a female police officer was less than a foot away from me.

Negative experience: They need security/police at the front drop off bay. Uber, uber eats, random cars are always in the way taking FOR EVER to move out the way. NON EMERGENT TRANSPORTATION VANS AND BUSES need those spots open to drop off OUR VETERANS.

Fantastic experience: The Emergency Room team was amazing. It was a Saturday night and there was no wait time. I saw a nurse immediately and a doctor within 10 minutes. You can't get that kind of care at a private hospital. The team was all professional and answered all my questions and made sure I got the care I needed.

Fantastic experience: I spent the day there with my Dad for tests. I've never seen such love in a hospital. Even in gift shop and cafeteria. Everyone was so polite and showed appreciation to one another. Multiple Dr went over my Dad's results. There's no hospital/staff like this in my state.

Negative experience: Jesse Brown participates in gang-stalking some patients. However, in a life/death situation, veterans should head there if it's the closest place. Keep in mind though, there's some shady dealings that happen in this place among some (not all) staff members.

Negative experience: So I’ve recently completed my 6 round of laser hair removal in the dermatology clinic. Aside from the operational issues over the last two years of waiting to be seen 1-2 hours after my scheduled appointment time. Doctors have mutilated my skin by putting the hair removal laser on the tattooed areas of my skin which did not require treatment. This was done on more than one occasion. More recently the resident put the laser done over an already scarred portion of tattooed skin causing even more damage. This is a clear deviation away from medical standards. These are doctors not nurses or unlicensed technicians. The burns were deep enough to force the ink out of my skin, causing deep (2nd degree partial thickness burns) ulcer like blistering and crusting over which take weeks to heal. However my neck has permanent hyperpigmentation and scarring which I’ll have to live with. Patient advocate called me and ask what do I expect him to do. We are not test animals to play on. You all will be held legally accountable and changes in care will be made going forward I can assure you that.

Fantastic experience: I have great experiences at JBVA in everything except the women's clinic. Dr Cherukuri was setting me up for an unnecessary hysterectomy and nobody believed me until I had a phone call with her and she forgot to disconnect the speaker phone and accidentally revealed the agenda while trash talking me to a student. Because I reported it their women's clinic program director, Asya Brodsky, called and suggested that I consider not reporting anymore because it could be more traumatic for me.

Positive experience: The ER was fantastic, the doctors and nurses were all attentive and had great bedside manner. Would of been 5 stars however after leaving the ER we had to fill a script at pharmacy and the wait time is beyond ridiculous. So we had breakfast while we waited and we overheard a male trash guy yelling and cussing at kitchen workers over a button. Would definitely recommend the ER.

Fantastic experience: This review is only for its "hoptel" which is a small hotel within the hospital and on its top floor. I was told to stay there when I was put to sleep for a normally out-patient procedure but did not have any family or friend to pick me up and take me home. I am a trucker who lives in his sleeper truck and I just did this procedure during a 34-hour reset in Chicago. The hoptel is just an old hospital wing converted into a hotel. They did very little remodeling. Mainly put in a queen-size bed for a hospital bed. For example, the sink is out by the bed and not in the bathroom, which does have its own shower. Awful pink is the hall color scheme. You feel like you are back in the 50s. They only provide feather pillows so if you are allergic to feathers (as I am), they will just give you a couple folded-up bed spreads and a pillow case. Very hard pillow. You cannot have any medical restrictions or they won't accept you as there is no nurse in the hoptel. Just an orderly. You are not to leave the floor once admitted. No roaming the hospital at night. In fact, if you shut your door when leaving your room, it will lock itself and the orderly will have to unlock it for you to re-enter so you need to prop the door open when needing to leave your room. There is a free water and ice machine by the orderly station. They will give you a voucher for a free dinner and another for breakfast in the hospital's cafeteria. Be sure to hit the hospital cantina before it closes. See the photo of what I bought from it spread out on my bed. You have to check out by 10 am. If I had to pay, it would get just one star BUT as it is free, they give you a bag of free tioletries (tooth brush, small tube of toothpaste, comb, soap bar, small bottle of shampoo, and a small bottle of hair conditioner), a wash cloth, a drying towel, and you don't share the room with someone else, I give it five stars. VA, thank you for providing this to us vets who are away from home.

Negative experience: I moved to Chicago recently and had to find my husband who is a Vietnam veteran a primary doctor. I go with him to his appointment at the Jesse Brown VA clinic. As we walk in through the door, we see a few of the staff screening people, as I get closer a lady yells at me and said, I need to see your ID! A hello and may I please see an Id would of been nice. Unfortunately the doctor visit was a total joke! As we left out of the doctors exam room. I asked a staff member who was sitting at the front desk if this was check -out? He snapped at me and said " Listen I'm the only one here!" I'm like excuse me sir there is no one in line and I'm just asking a question. He begins to ramble on rudely about the procedure. This was at the module G section. I recommended having some kind of training workshop on professionalism for these rude employees!

Josh Jones 2 years ago

Negative experience: My rating would’ve been much higher if not for the lack of communication. I had a specialist appointment earlier this month and the doctor recommended me for a follow up appointment 6 weeks later. After asking if I should call and make the appointment I was told it was not needed and they would take care of it. 20+ days later with no update I called to make an appointment, the operator was extremely dismissive and rude. Repeatedly cutting me off, giving a tone of annoyance and even sighing into the phone while speaking with me. Finally scheduled an appointment but it is over 8 weeks from my original appointment. If a patient is told to be seen again in a time frame, they should always be seen again at the expected time. Other than this instance the VA system has served me well, especially at the Lakeside Clinic.

Fantastic experience: Very pleased with Jesse Brown VA. I’m a ‘Nam Vet and was reluctant to turn to the VA for any help after discharge in ‘69. Finally made the decision to go in for medical care in 1990 and have never regretted that choice. Been coming to Jesse Brown and have been receiving excellent care from top to bottom. This facility and its staff have my complete support and I’m eternally grateful they are there for me and all the other Veterans who seek care here.

Negative experience: This has to be the worst facility there is in communication skills and assistance. After waiting 5 min. for the operator to answer the phone he transferred me to the department I requested. It takes that department 3 min to answer the phone . I ask the person who picked up the phone a question of which orthopedic surgeon did they have on staff there , she tells me let me transfer you to a nurse .wouldn't you think the person working at the main desk in orthopedic department she would know the answer. So she transferd me to a nurse . After waiting 10 minutes I got tired of waiting I huge up . Maybe it's a omen for me to seek help elsewhere for medical treatment. Otherwise I might lose my hand .

Negative experience: If I could give zero stars, I would. Every time I have to deal with the VA, there's an issue. I had an appointment that was scheduled two months in advance. They constantly sent an email stating a confirmation email will be sent with the link to join the Telehealth visit. The email was never sent, but I got a text to enter the video on the day of the appointment. I open the text 15 minutes before my appointment, and the website doesn't load. I tried to copy and paste the link into Firefox, Chrome, and Safari, all installed on my phone. All yielded the same result of a blank white screen. You can't log into the VA Video Connect app manually because it doesn't have the option; it needs a link to redirect it to the app. Even if you could log in manually, there was never an email sent for the meeting room number. I copied and pasted the link from the text into an email and sent it to myself, and logged in from my computer after attempting to log in for 15 minutes. I finally could log in through my computer, but here's the kicker. No one shows up. I waited an hour for the doctor to show up but never did. I called the VA, THIS specific VA, and I was on hold for 20 minutes to speak to a live person. After I got through to a live person and was sent to the correct department, I informed the receptionist what was going on. While eating, the receptionist told me that the Dr. would have to call me back later. Talk about unprofessional; the doctor does not show to an appointment, but they didn't even try and rectify the situation. Why call me later when they should have been logged on for the appointment! If I wanted to waste my time, I could have just sat in a room and watched paint dry! The employees that answer the phone sound like they don't care, the hold times are atrocious ( I'm talking pre-pandemic as well), and the doctors either gaslight the patient or don't care themselves! No wonder other veterans HATE going to the VA because the level of incompetency is mind-shattering!

Negative experience: My dad is here for chemotherapy and the 6th floor supervisor has to be the rudest person I've ever came across. Customer Service is not in a standing for her to be a "supervisor". Clearly there's a patient waiting for assistance meanwhile she's on social media. I cleared my thoat to get her attention which didn't help. I watched her on social media and it wasn't until I walked to her desk to let her know someone needed assistance. After waiting 2 hours to be seen, I asked for her manager. She tells me she's the supervisor and is covering multiple departments with an attitude still. I was able to get a "leads" contact information which doesn't help. Everytime I walked past the desk she purposely pick up her phone to further prove that she has no respect for Veterans.

Negative experience: PIV team is useless. Tried to schedule an appointment for three days now - must have called 20+ times and they didn't pick up once. Got fed up and just went in-person to the facility twice. Each time, the team is just leisurely sitting around, gossiping. They tell me I have to call to make an appointment even though I was the ONLY person in line both times. I explain that they never answer when I tried calling so they take my information and say they'll get back to me. Go figure, they never got back to me. I've been to their office previously for my fingerprints - this office is never busy. Not an exaggeration - there is never a soul in that office aside from the PIV team. I don't understand why they work so hard to give you the runaround when it would be simpler to just...idk, do their jobs?

And that's the customer service idk if it is just me but the staff are uncomfortably rude. Like we are there to have fun or something take up their time.not really what I think people want to encounter when dealing with their problems that needs taking care of ...most people's stress are high when visiting...so let's be humans with care for one another and be nice ... you don't like being hospitable don't work for a hospital

Negative experience: I am back in hopes of SOMEONE correcting the situation which is the disgusting, deplorable, unprofessional, terrible, bad, demeaning, inferior, malicious, rude, and non -trained care at Jesse Brown Medical Center. I use the term “care” loosely because the only thing they care about is themselves. Veterans are Guinea pigs so the students can go be doctors at real hospitals. Why I continually ask? I ended up contacting the joint commissions which I found online. The so called doctors and so called care are as valuable and real as a $3 bill. What is it going to take? Again, I only gave 1 stars because that is the lowest to be able to post I am embarrassed to be a veteran if that’s the care we get! The best summarization is the alleged doctors at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center wouldn’t know their -SS from a whole in the ground!

Negative experience: Truly terrible how they treat veterans. I always tried supporting the VA, but it needs a serious overhaul. I've had multiple missed appointments (many for psychiatry) without any explanation other than that they're really busy. The providers are very condescending and don't listen to your needs as a patient. I've run out of medications because of providers skipping appointments. Then, when you try to use the MISSION Act, you just get ran around the hospital and everyone says you need to talk to someone else.

Negative experience: My primary care giver never knew how to pronounce my name the entire three years I went there. I would have to read my own medical records to find out what diagnoses had been given to me and medical issues my primary should’ve been aware of (if she had ever bothered to read my medical notes the way we’re taught to in medical school), she simply had no idea about even though it would pertain to the current appointment. She was also un-empathetic. Chiropractor is a joke with control issues.

Fantastic experience: I have been going to Jesse Brown for my primary care for about 10 years. The early years was a little unorganized (being generous) waiting for anything took a long time. The last couple of years they automated most processes and really have made JB a good place. It appears they have made a lot of staff changes, got rid of the arrogant ones, not all but most, which makes going there a good experience. 1. Blood clinic was a cluster, up to an hour or more to draw blood, they increased #of staff, and automated check in, works much better. 2 Appointments for the most part are on time, no long waits, again automated check in, much improved. 3. Travel allotment process automated, big improvement, eliminated checking out with a person. 4. Pharmacy to get meds, much improved. I generally get meds mailed, but had to pick a couple prescriptions up at JB, Pharmacists are great, nice people, helpful, want to make sure you understand what the meds are for, and how the meds should be taken, very important Information. 5. Staff / Dr. / Nurses have always been excellent courteous, caring and professional, always felt they have my best interest in mind. JB isn’t perfect but no place is. I appreciate the on going improvements they are making and all the medical care I get there.

Negative experience: I just lost my uncle to Covid 19 at this place. I’m furious as I feel they neglected him in releasing him to soon, after a high fever of 108. It’s obviously of concern he caught pneumonia after releasing him and went down hill from there. What a careless decision on there part. How could I forget this. I no longer have my uncle.

Fantastic experience: Great Doctors and Nurses

Steven Hinman 4 years ago

Positive experience: Please read entire review I changed it from 1 star to 4 (02/18/20) Wow. I tried to call my primary care team. The phone rings endlessly. If you try to use the automated system, it hangs up. I tried each 3 times. So anyone have advice on how I reach a person at the hospital? Other VAs are not like this. Madison WI doesn't have these issues. It must be a Chicago thing 02/19/20 Edit Sure enough, once I got there no one had any idea I was supposed to be there. I got sent here - there - everywhere. One man, Roger Richardson - walked with me all over the hospital trying to find out what happened. Until we finally got to where I was supposed to go and he convinced the nurse to check me in and the doctor was able to see me. Someone dropped the ball and dor that I give whoever was responsible 1 star. Robert picked up the fumble and made it right. For him I wish I could give 6 stars. Thank you Robert. After your help my blood pressure went down. Well done.

Negative experience: Horrible experience. Went to the ER with the worst constipation of my life - after not pooping for days! Only one nurse was admitting a back log of patients in the ER. Waited over three and a half hours for a Rx, only to be sent home in the same pain, with OTC meds. While there, I was asked to provide a urin sample, which I did. After waiting almost two hours, I carried the sample out to the ER desk. Meanwhile, Miriam and another female nurse are are arguing about shifts and being paid to study at work. Truly poor medical management!

Negative experience: Pretty much every employee I’ve dealt with at Jesse Brown has been so rude. Most of them always sound annoyed when you call and impatient if you don’t understand something. I switched over to Lake Baldwin/Lake Nona VAs down in Orlando and noticed a big difference here. They actually treat veterans like we matter!!!

Positive experience: Just like in the service, hurry up and wait. Be at your appointment 15 min early, then wait an hour or more to be seen. But doctor's are decent, knowledgeable. Assistants are students in training. Podiatry.

Fantastic experience: I went there with both a faulty bridge and an an implant that got infected. This dental work was done in a VA hospital in NJ Dr. Susie Chung and her nurse Florence work on my teeth for 2 days, a total of 6 hours. On the 2nd day Dr Chung came in on her day off. 2 amazing and dedicated people doing God’s work.

Negative experience: It's nearly impossible to schedule an appointment with your primary care provider here unless you make a trip to the facility. First, you will have to call in and get hung up on 3-4 times before you even speak to someone. Next, once you finally get someone on the phone, they take down your information which you have to repeat multiple times while they talk to people around them at the same time. After they finally get your information down correctly, they tell you they will call you back to let you know when to come in (hopefully you have a wide open schedule). After that, someone may or may not call you back. If not, start over with step 1. Why can't I just call in and make an appointment like anyone else going to any civilian hospital and speak to someone that gives a s**t about what they are doing? Why do vets have to jump through so many hoops just to make an appointment to see their primary care provider? Why does the VA continue to hire people that neglect their responsibilities, don't care about vets, and just show up for a paycheck? How long will vets have to suffer neglectful healthcare before something changes? It's beyond ridiculous. Do better people!

Positive experience: Deep in the heart of Chicago. It is difficult to get there because of traffic, but I have not had a bad experience there. The staff and medical personnel are all kind an courteous. Its does get very crowded.

Negative experience: Yesterday was my first interaction with the VA and I must say that the staff in the admitting department we're some of the most rude, discriminatory and invalidating people that I have ever dealt with in any organization including the Marine Corps itself. I was told that I had my service dates wrong despite having my DD214s in hand saying otherwise. I was told that my service didn't really count since I never set foot overseas.i was told that what I was, was a learned behavior (I am transgender) and that the person understood this because the individual I spoke with was black and gay. I was then told to just "live my life and leave this military thing behind" as if I had come to hang out at the hospital for fun and not because of my injuries. This is surprising and upsetting in so many unique ways and I will be following up with higher about this.

Negative experience: I have been here since 10 this morning. It is now 410p I'm waiting to see a pharmacist to get a script filled. This morning my vet had a 10 o'clock appointment for a visual field. We were told to return at 1:30 to see the doctor. We needed to have labs drawn for an upcoming appointment so we went down to have that done. After labs we went to the canteen for lunch. We returned to the eye clinic at 1. We waited for another hour and my phone rang. It was the nurse looking for us. I informed her we were in room 5303 waiting. They found us at 2:15. The nurse took him for another test and returned him to the waiting area. The doctor called us in at 2:30p. The exam took a few minutes. He dilated his eyes and returned him to room 5303. We waited 20 minutes and went back in to see the doctor. The exam lasted until 3:30 and my vet was told he has an eye infection and will require medication, lab work and a xray today. Fast forward it is now 4:30p. We are still waiting in pharmacy to pick up meds. We still need to get the lab work done before 5 and get the x-ray. Needless to say we are tired and hungry we both diabetic and we are looking at a long ride home in rush hour traffic. This is the thanks are vets get for serving their country.

Negative experience: Completely trashy staff, the docs are good but most are not from the city so that says a lot. I only go here if the smaller VA in Indiana does not have the machines that I need, and I loath every visit here.
