Fantastic experience: When I first came to Alabama Surgical, I was not sure what to expect. I had tried the diets and exercises, and had no results. From the very first time meeting Dr. Doucette, I knew he was going to be the one to help me get my life back on track. Everyone from the insurance specialists, to the dietitians, and nurses were amazing in my insurance hurdles to be able to be approved for surgery. There was a mix up with my pre-op labs that was not caught until the day of surgery, which Dr. Doucette was able to reschedule me for a day he normally does not do surgeries. I underwent a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, and it was a success. Dr. Doucette did an amazing job answering any and all questions I had, and made me feel at ease. I am now 6 1/2 months post op at the time of this review (May 2025) and I have lost 130lbs!! Thank you Dr. Doucette for everything you have done for me, and believing in me to be able to get my life back!! I highly recommend Alabama Surgical Associates, and most importantly, the best doctor I have ever met, Dr. Doucette!!

Negative experience: Came super excited for my new patient consult. Got there at 1245, doors locked, even though it shows they only close at lunch on Wednesdays. Checked in first had everything completed correctly. 37 mins later everyone else went into their appointment but me. Mind you they opened at 1. So that’s 15 mins waiting on the door, 37 mins in the waiting room, and nothing. Waste of time. Reviews were right about front desk

Fantastic experience: This place is one of the most amazing staffs I’ve ever worked with. And Dr. Doucet is just amazing and makes you feel so so so comfortable and make sure that it’s not overwhelming for you. I can’t rave about them and the doctor enough … they were so great.. thank you thank you thank you you guys.

Negative experience: I did an inquiry on their site for ESG Weight loss surgery. I made appointment sent in all my information. Drove 3.5 hrs with excitement that I could get the ESG done to have my time wasted. Front desk staff had some tension amongts them but the young lady I dealt with remained pleasant and friendly. I get called by another young lady who was so nice and friendly. I get the another young lady who shoves a clipboard in my face with prices and says she will be back. Doctor comes in cool guy......he ask me what surgery I was interested in I tell him ESG he then goes into what he suggest. I explain I have done y homework and research on the procedure I want and why. He is so stuck of the Gastric Sleeve which I do not want. To tell me he can't do the ESG because of lack of having the equipment to perform the procedure and he can't afford it and hospital isn't going to purchase it etc..... So a 3.5 hr drive to be lied too and this couLd have been a zoom or phone consultation. A WASTE OF TIME AND FALSE ADVERTISEMENT ON THEIR WEBSITE FOR PROCEDURES THEY CANNOT PERFORM!!!! THEN YOUNG LADY COMES BACK TO TRY TO COLLECT MONEY FOR A PROCEDURE THEY CANNOT PERFORM. Take it off if you cannot do something. Doctor blew smoke up my ass so hard it made me so pissed off. But was quick to offer me injections. But could do the Gastric the next day if I wanted too but not the ESG. How funny is that! A $25 copay to be lied too and time wasted!

Fantastic experience: I’m almost 10 months post op, and I’ve have had several post op appts and needed to speak to Dr Doucette on call. All of the staff was wonderful from the front desk, the office manager, the dietitian Johanna, and Dr Doucette. I flew down from Ohio for my surgery and couldn’t have asked for a better experience especially given the circumstance!

Positive experience: The doctor is great but the office staff, not so much. I had to change doctors because after I did everything required of me I heard nothing. We called and left 4 messages but got no return calls.

Positive experience: As far as the surgery goes doing OK. Nutritionist was awesome. However, not a great experience with the office people or Dr.Doucet. All appointment times written on papers were wrong. The office staffed seemed to not really care at all. Went to meet Dr Doucet for the first time the day before my surgery and he did not even show up, he called me on the phone while setting in his office. Saw him for 5 minutes before the surgery, he was very nice. Next day in his office I had to wait over an hour for him. When I called in to do my follow-up consultation, I waited on zoom for over 35 minutes for him to join. That is very disrespectful of other people's time! However, he did a good job on surgery as far as I can tell. But 2 months post surgery I have lost 45 lbs, so I guess the most important part he is great at.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful and caring staff & doctor with encouraging words from everyone. Had some minor issues after the surgery the staff and the doctor returned my calls and had me fixed up right away. I highly recommend and would not go anywhere else. Five stars all around !!!!!

Negative experience: Everyone was kind. Don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with staff but it definitely seems like a money grab. All sorts of added fees and steps. I decided not to go through it due to how expensive everything else was outside of the actual procedure

Fantastic experience: Do not get the Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty ( ESG Accordian procedure ). I had the ESG and all the threads poped in the first month. That said I fully endorse Dr. Doucette and should have let him do a traditional sleeve gastroplasty. Im on tirzepatide now and have total control over my weight and appetite. If you need bariatric surgery Dr. Doucette is an excellent choice and if i ever need the sleeve gastroplasty ill probably use him. I highly discourage anyone from getting the Endoscopic version , it was a waste of time and money for me. I might mention one of the reasons I was extra pleased with Dr. Doucette is how well he and his office made arrangements for me as an out of town patient. I traveled to Huntsville and they made that very easy for me.

Fantastic experience: I got my surgery in October of 2023! It was the Best choice I ever made. The staff was always so kind and knowledgeable. I ask a lot of questions and they never got mad. I would recommend them to everyone! I came from out of state and the process was still a breeze.

Fantastic experience: My weight loss adventure with Dr. Doucette’s team has been outstanding. The program was laid out clearly in the beginning. Clear goals were established. The pre-treatment process was smooth and achievable. The surgery was smooth with no post surgery issues. And the weight loss is ahead of schedule. I’m not sure it could’ve gone any smoother. I feel great more active, more energy all the things that were promised.

Fantastic experience: I went in for a consultation for gastric bypass, the staff was very nice and helpful. The doctor come in and within 5 minutes we knew he wasn't going to do it I needed to go to UAB or Vanderbilt but he still sat down and talked to me asked me a lot of questions he explained the surgery to me in detail. He didn't have to do that! But he did, he was very caring and professional. I would recommend him to anyone interested in weight loss surgery!!!

Fantastic experience: Alabama surgical associates are amazing. My insurance doesn't cover gastric sleeve surgery. I did research for a year trying to find someplace close to me that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg. I found them. Dr. Doucette is so kind and understanding. If I were to do it again I would definitely go to him.

Negative experience: Doctor seems great, but over scheduled. Front office and administration is a nightmare. I routinely have to check up behind them to make sure paperwork was completed or sent when it was supposed to. I was also left hanging for a week while sick because they were closed for a whole week, which forced me to seek medical advice from a different doctor. I am still absolutely satisfied with my surgery, but the scheduling and admin issues have been an absolute nightmare. It has sometimes taken more than a week to get simple questions answered such as "can I take cough medicine." If I had this to do over again I would likely look for a different office just because the admin is so hard to work with.

Dr. Doucette is fantastic between his educational background, experience and his bedside manor I am extremely impressed and satisfied with my surgery and navigating the recovery process

Fantastic experience: Yesterday was my initial consult. I researched procedures so I was armed with a lot of info. I also had a medical concern that I alerted them to that could determine which type of surgery I’d be eligible for. Dr. Doucette took the time to read/consider this information BEFOREHAND so we could discuss which procedure would be best. He answered every question I had. His staff was friendly and efficient. Every instruction was clear and everyone made sure I understood every step. Just from this experience alone, I recommend at least a consultation before your journey.

Fantastic experience: I had VSG by Dr. Doucette on 8/17/2022. Dr. Doucette was so down to earth and very encouraging. I loved the staff also. They were very sweet and informative. The dietician that I saw was wonderful also. I did self-pay for my surgery as insurance did not cover. I respectfully disagree with the few previous reviews complaining about payment for a telephone consultation. Yes, you were charged for a consultation with a medical provider. This is not a free service. They are very upfront and transparent about the pricing. This should be no surprise. I'm a nurse practitioner but, they still made sure that I understood the procedure, the process, and all the steps going forward. I came from out of state to have this procedure. I felt very informed and was well cared for. My down time was minimal with very little discomfort. My experience was top notch. I would take those negative reviews with a grain of salt. They are coming from people who just did not listen, follow instructions, or did not get what they wanted. These have no bearing on the care that this office provided. The whole process was laid out and fully explained before I made my trip with any questions answered. When I arrived at the office each time, everything was explained to me including follow ups and pricing. They ensured that I understood before leaving. This was a big decision for me. I feel very grateful for the amazing care that I got from Dr. Doucette, and his staff. Thank you so much! You guys were awesome!

Negative experience: I spoke with the nurse at Alabama surgical associates and explained my medical history with her, she knew about my prior surgery and set up a consult with the Physician. The Dr. reached out and we had a 5 minute phone conversation to inform me I wasn’t really a candidate. They took 150.00 from me when the nurse could have given me the same info the Dr. Did. I called several times and left messages to speak with the office manager to explain I felt like they shouldn’t have charged me 150.00 for a few minute phone conversation for something the nurse should have been able to tell me. I was very taken back by how rude and unprofessional the office manager was. I would never want to do business with somewhere who steals your money and treats people the way Melinda did. I would definitely beware before setting up a consult with these people, I would hate for anyone to get taken advantage like I did.

Negative experience: This place was nice until the day of my surgery and the following 5 weeks after. I paid for a overnight stay in the hospital and signed the paperwork stating that's what I paid for. They rushed me out of the hospital as soon as they could. The morning after my surgery they called 3 times wanting an additional 4 thousand after already paying the the 11 thousand we agreed on for the surgery and signed the paperwork confirming the price. While I was in preop the continuously questioned my relationship with my father accusing him of being my husband, no matter how many times I corrected them or my dad corrected them. The nurse in preop was extremely rude and complained when I asked asked for my dad. The only nice people to me was the Anesthesiologist, the nutritionist and the nurse-aide I had after my surgery. They were extremely rude when I told them I was returning to my home state because I was an out of state paitent, and that I would attend the virtual appointments. By week 4 I was have severe complications and the surgeon said I was on purposely causing my complications. I ended up in the Emergency Room where the doctor confirmed there was something wrong. I had an endoscopy done and was told I had a hernia, which my bariatric surgeon said I didn't have one. I was also evaluated by my psychiatrist again to prove I wasn't doing it on purpose and she cleared me. Week 5 they called again and acted completely shocked when they learned something was wrong and that I was indeed having actual complications. I would've never came here if I would've known I would be treated like that. I would've spent my money elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: The staff was very helpful with getting me worked in with a local cardiologist for clearance a week before surgery. My local doctor was backed out 2 months with no chance of seeing me. I had a good experience with the entire staff and highly recommend Alabama Surgical Associates.

Fantastic experience: I had VSG surgery in August 2021. I first started interacting with the office in October 2020. Amber and the other techs in the main office are so friendly and helpful. I started seeing Dr. Doucette and the dietician (Macey at the time) in November 2020. The guidance and support I received before surgery was outstanding. Dr. Doucette has a wonderful bedside manner, but he is also straightforward and tells it like it is, which honestly is something I needed. I have had a few appointments since having surgery in August and they have all been great. I like that you can also buy vitamins, shakes etc here in case you need something and can’t order online. I am already feeling so much better since surgery. It is a life changing experience and I’m so thankful I chose Dr. Doucette as my surgeon.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Doucette and his staff are amazing. I was always a priority when in the building. All of my questions were answered and they took their time with my appointments. My surgery went beautifully and my scars are perfect. Once healed, you wont be able to tell they are there. Dr. Doucette knows his stuff and fully explained the procedure, as well as his expectations for me. I am motivated to keep pushing forward, now that I have a clear defined goal before me, designed by my doctor. No complaints whatsoever.

Positive experience: Not available to help after surgery. I had my gallbladder removed. I called Friday morning for help after the pain medication ran out. They never called me back. I had to call back after 130. They said the doctor had already left and I was on my own for the weekend. Appreciate that! Maybe Rita is a bit overwhelmed with her job, but her attitude sucks. Doctor is great though.

The entire experience has been great. I live 4.5 hours away and the staff is very supportive and quick to respond.

Negative experience: Most reviews are positive for this practice, this may be the case for the doctors, but every staff member that I spoke with over the phone at Alabama Surgical Associates were very rude, as if I was bothering them.

Fantastic experience: Just wanted to say how much I appreciate everyone in the office. Especially Kathy Alnut in the insurance department. I felt like I bugged her to death trying to get everything squared away. She was on top of everything at all times. (Give her a raise) lol....I started my process the end of January I believe and I have my surgery March 25th 2019 with Dr. Foreman and I am so ready. Thanks to the ladies for making everything smooth sailing.

Negative experience: The doctor needs to seriously take a look at his "coordinator" and "insurance processor," they are so negative and I am SURE he's losing a lot of business/patients just from the initial call!! I couldn't get off the phone fast enough to call the next available bariatric doctor!! Felt so sorry for the little girl who was trying to schedule my appointment/consultation and was relaying the messages between the insurance person, coordinator and myself, if I didn't know any better, I would of thought they were PISSED OFF at the doctor and didn't want him to have anymore patients, HONESTLY that's HOW BAD IT WAS!!!!!! No to EVERYTHING, no positive energy WHATSOEVER!! Coordinator fee went from $100 to $300 within 45 seconds....
