South Wood County YMCA: Reviews
Fantastic experience: A great place.
Negative experience: I have a membership at the Stevens point YMCA but wanted to take a class in rapids. I was told I would have to pay the non-member fee to take the class there. No thanks !
Fantastic experience: Update** This past week I had great workouts with Kerrie and Shelly. Both are amazing instructor/trainers for the 9:15am low impact exercise classes. I’m feeling grateful to have these exercise options. I’ve been a Y member for a couple years now and I’ve had nothing but good experiences every time I go there. It is a state of the art facility and we are VERY lucky to have it in our community. The huge variety of exercise equipment is well maintained and is kept up to date with current technology options. The exercise classes are run and taught by well equipped trainers. It doesn’t matter which day of the week I attend, I always get a great workout. The walking track is a great place to walk when the weather outside is bad. But most importantly to me, the staff (every one of them) is kind, welcomes me with a smile, and is open to questions. Today I spoke with Beverly, over the phone, regarding my membership and she was a delight to talk with. :) She was able to answer all of my questions professionally and patiently which I truly appreciate. It’s easy to see that management is doing a good job teaching their staff members great customer service practices!
Positive experience: Great facility but i looked on google and it says open 24 hours but then it says they close at certain hours on the door?
Negative experience: It's makes me quite sad to write this comment but for the safety of the people and their familes this information needs to be passed on. It's a shame because the ymca is a great place for adults of all ages and children. In 2016 an incident occurred where a wisconsin rapids police officer frist name Dan (currently the liaison office for RPD I believe) came into the ymca demanding to search me and detain me. When I refused he threatened to Take me to jail out of rage (this is all happening in the ymca). I contacted my lawyer who said remain firm and do not let the police harass you which I did. Dan ended uo being told by his supervisor he was unlawfully trying to search and detain me. Out of Dan's rage fit he told the ymca staff to ban me and never let me back. Well for a few years I let it go, however recently I had the who shenanigan dropped and I was proven to have committed no crime and can again use the facility. Hopfully one day the police harassment can come to an end.
Positive experience: There is alot of old people that say nasty stuff to 13 year old girls other then that my experience was great
Fantastic experience: Came here once with my Daughter to use the pool and LOVED it. Lots to do in the pool area even a hot tub. Would gladly splash in the pool again. Thanks for accepting One Pass members.
Negative experience: Drop in kids area always "full"
Negative experience: We were enjoying the Y as a senior only to learn that they are no longer offering free passes through the silver sneaker program I am assuming this has something to do the finances So finances has been placed as a priority over health for seniors
Fantastic experience: I really love this place how clean they are even one is really friendly love working out here
Negative experience: Debating if I want to keep my membership after being talked to condescendingly by a lifeguard. I was using the therapy pool because I am pregnant and have a tendency to sink in the regular pool when swimming. I was trying to do an arm workout while floating on my back. The water resistance helps to push me and keep me afloat. I did not see the itty bitty sign that says to keep feet on the ground. It is not posted on the website but apparently it is a safety precaution. The lifeguard came over and told me it is a therapy pool and not a lazy river. I felt so insulted. I left after talking to the Aquatics Director but I still felt so terrible about the experience. I was enjoying the therapy pool experience in the water because my belly feels so heavy. The lifeguard ruined it with her snide remark and the Aquatics Director seemed to be ok with it.
Negative experience: avoid at all costs if you can. not only did they randomly up the price of our membership in the spring (without notice), they also treat paying customers like garbage. Will terminate your membership with no notice if they don't like you. Had an adult couple membership and they removed my partner for "aggressive behavior" without any warning or notifying either of us because he "slammed a door" after his key fob WE PAID FOR wasn't working / scanning and I let him in, and for "kicking a basketball" in a completely empty gym during after hours. Two actions that didn't cause any damage or hurt anybody. Then they changed my membership type without my permission or any notice and charged me the adult price even though I am under 25. They refuse to refund it even though I don't feel comfortable using the facility after they handled this situation so poorly, and I never agreed to switch to a single person membership. What ever happened to the customer is always right? If my key fob doesn't work I'm supposed to just go home after I drove all the way to Port Edwards to use a membership I pay for? Don't waste your money here. At $816 a year for two adults plus $60 for key fobs that don't even work all the time, you might as well just invest in a home gym.
Negative experience: Just one small issues that I've needed to bring up about this gym because I don't think anything was ever done about it. Wisconsin rapids police officer Nick Broccman was in the gym one evening and proceeded to take his shirt off in an intimidation way infront of my friend Mike czaikowski and make intimidating looks at us. We were under the impression no one could change cloths or take their shirts or pants off in the middle of the gym. I'm pretty sure it's actually posted on the rule board they have in the gym. Also i thought being a poloce officer he qould know and follow the rules of any facility...My friend and I just don't want to be harassed by rapids pd and also want to note since multiple incidents happened with them they've turned off public commenting on their Google page. I live the gym and the staff are friendly but this issues cannot happen again.
Fantastic experience: I love everyone's whom works. For this Wisconsin Rapids YMCA. They treat me my Husband like family the front desk ladies are wonderful, due to relocation 2 years l highly recommend anyone to attend that ymca there is one the Young. Ladies. That stands out the most whom l strongly Recommends deeply her name Chelsea swimming pool supervisor whom is very pleasant he happy outgoing with everyone she dedicated hard workers she goes over and beyond on her job. If you want or in need Chelsea is the one .will be Morer l have seen this young lady work with with elderly handicapped all age children. She always helping everyone . Which everyone YMCA needs a CHElSEA❤️. again thank ymca Wisconsin Rapids all your wonderful workers
Fantastic experience: This was our first time here we were very impressed. We usually go to another YMCA, It's nice but this place has to be one of the top ones.
Fantastic experience: Great facility! Only wish it was available 24/7
Fantastic experience: We use it nearly everyday
Fantastic experience: Large, clean and friendly kid space with adequate staff. Nice to get a workout in without having to wait for naptime or to use excessive screen time to do exercises that kids cannot do with me, and know that they are having fun too.
Negative experience: the staff are terrible like awful, theyll harrass you about petty little things like cutoffs that show any midriff and if your under 18 and resonably attractive a specific 20 year old lifeguard will hit on you no matter who you are
Fantastic experience: Best gym in the area. Friendly front desk staff, clean facility, community atmosphere; they continue to add and update the equipment.
Negative experience: I have a membership here I'm warning all blacks that in the pool area the ppl there watch you like a hawk makes me and my children feel uncomfortable like they don't like black ppl all they do is stare very strict about what u can and can't do in the pool area membership's are expensive and I won't be going anywhere paying what I pay and my children can't have fun or feel like ppl are constantly staring at them!!!! Need better staff who make ppl feel welcoming and warming!!!
Fantastic experience: Great facility but kind of expensive
Fantastic experience: Staff is amazing and the facility is always clean. Childcare is a huge benefit and the facility is always clean and well staffed.
Fantastic experience: Came here for a day pass for the aquatic center! Adult day passes are $15, children’s - $10, family passes are $20. (Up to 6 children I believe) If you have a YMCA membership, you are able to use it at this location. It is universal. Aquatic center included a cold lap swim pool, climbing wall, diving boards, warm recreational pool, therapy pool (like a lazy river), wading pool with several bubblers, toys, hot tub, sauna, etc! We spent hours here. The locker rooms are HUGE. Everything was enclosed unlike the YMCA where I’m from. They had separate stalls for restrooms, changing and showering. They had the swimsuit spinners & lockers that are FREE|lock digitally.
Positive experience: This is a great facility!! The pool was really nice and the universal locker room was very clean. However the front desk staff was a little rude and slow getting us checked in.
Fantastic experience: We have fun every day there as a family
Negative experience: First day there a ignorant group of teenagers tried messing w/ me and I'm sure I'm not the first person they've done this too. Blocking my lane on the running track ON PURPOSE while staring at their phones. This place needs new management.
Fantastic experience: They YMCA is great. My kids love going while I work out. There is so much to do and the new building is huge and a great thing for our community. This was money well spent!! If you have not gone and checked it out do so. It’s never to let to get a healthier you!!
Fantastic experience: Wonderful facility that would not be out of place in a large city like Madison. Many different exercise areas, all with different, up-to-date equipment, plus a large pool and gym. The YMCA also operates programs to help people get and stay healthy. Staff are all helpful and friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
Negative experience: The Y only values what’s important to them instead of what’s important to the people that actually pay to keep the place going. Got talked to about my cutoff workout shirt that covers a large majority of my body, but moves around during certain workouts exposing the occasional nipple. I immediately cancelled my membership upon leaving. Don’t put windows in a workout space where you can look down into the pool and see people of all ages in bathing suits, but then tell me my cutoff exposes too much. Nobody says anything about the 5, 16 year olds that screw off on a single machine for 30 mins talking about their latest TikTok that got 5 likes, or taking selfies for their SnapChat story, riding on the coat tail of their parents membership. There are better options in town that actually value the customer and at half the price. The only reason I even gave 2 stars was because Trainer Adam is an amazing person.
Positive experience: Great gym! Gone here a few times. Much bigger then the one in adams. So I go here if I want to use a machine the adams one doesn't have.
Fantastic experience: Love the new facility, lots of cardio machines and weight machines. Locker rooms are nice and open. Pool is amazing! Love running on the track upstairs.
Negative experience: Workout facility is absolutely disgusting. Every surface is dirty…floors, mirrors, workout machines, etc. When I knell down on the floor, my legs get absolutely covered in dirt and hair. I swear it never gets cleaned. For the price you pay for a membership, you’d at least expect a clean environment. Definitely not sanitary.
Fantastic experience: My daughter goes to YMCA in Wisconsin Rapids for day care. They are top notch! The nicest teachers and great environment, my daughter absolutely loves it here. The facility is state of the art. You will not be disappointed if you decide to become a member!
Fantastic experience: The best equipment and employees..very helpful
Fantastic experience: Best equipment and staff on the premises
Negative experience: Tryed to get a free shower at the ymca because there a nonprofit and they are supposed to help homeless and people that need help. Me and my girl friend has been living in our car due to Covid-19’s issues and we need a shower so we asked the ymca in rapid Wisconsin and they never called back so we went there after 5 days and one if the director staci kiwi would not even talk to us. So we left with out a shower. That you not ymca fir not even trying to help other.
Negative experience: Whoever I spoke to on the phone was very rude. I called to enquire about day passes, we live 40 minutes away and work in the opposite direction so a membership is not worth it for us. Ive visited YMCAs around the country and they all have a day pass option, usually $5-$7 for adults and $2-$4 for children. The lady on the phone acted like I was crazy for asking and told me 'no you can't just come in off the street'. Ill steer clear from this location and continue to make the drive to stevens point.
Hi Cassy, we offer our sincerest apologies that you had a negative experience over the phone. We do have day passes available for nonmembers, Youth (Age 3-18): $5 Daily, Adult (Age 19+): $10 Daily, Family: $15 Daily. However, we do require that nonmembers be accompanied by a current South Wood County YMCA member.
Fantastic experience: Always clean and professional.
Fantastic experience: There were issues with our key fob access to the Port Edwards facility. Matt and Carol did a wonderful job helping to remedy the situation!
Fantastic experience: Silversneakers fun to try and move with music, even at 70 I used to be very coordinating. Not anymore. Still fun to see others, mostly much more coordinating than I am all moving. Our Instructors patience, smiling and motivation without singling any one person out is the best.Marjorie thankyou!
Fantastic experience: Great place
Fantastic experience: Super nice, clean new and modern. Huge windows give a great view of the sky.The staff is 1st class for sure.
Positive experience: Had a wonderful time at the YMCA. Used the resistance pool, swam and used the hot tub.
Fantastic experience: The new YMCA in Wisconsin Rapids is amazing. The staff is so friendly and the facility is perfect.
Fantastic experience: The y is basically my favorite place. The new facility is amazing! It is the nicest one I have been to. I travel the us for work and have been to many ymcas all over the country and for little rapids to have this facility we are very lucky! Great staff great gym!!
Fantastic experience: Nice new place.
Fantastic experience: Amazing facility and wonderful staff!!
Fantastic experience: From the parts of it that I use, they did a good job with this new building.
Fantastic experience: This faciliy is great! Staff is helpful and willing to go the distance to help. Basketball kids program is running smoothly. Thanks to the volunteers that make programs like this possible. Doing a much better job than some schools programs.
Negative experience: Great facility horrible staff....they forget that its the members that pay.
Positive experience: friendly and clean.
Fantastic experience: Great new place. Very clean.
Positive experience: New facility is very nice. The mandatory mask and having to check out seems a bit like Russia, otherwise place is very nice.
Fantastic experience: The new YMCA in Rapids is great. Not just functionally great, but aesthetically pleasing as well. Staff is courteous and quick to answer questions and address concerns.
Fantastic experience: Staff is nice and the facility it’s self is pretty nice
Fantastic experience: Brand new it is perfect and just beautiful
Negative experience: Horrible. Can't get day passes. At least limit them.
Fantastic experience: Gad a great body burn class there. Very nice new facility.
Fantastic experience: First time there. Front desk was helpful and answered all my questions nicely. Had my four year old granddaughter with me. Made her feel welcomed. Life guard gave her pool toys to play with whitch I mistaking thought were for pool classes. And watched us closely to make sure she stayed safe. Dressing rooms were constantly being cleaned. Excited to go back.
Fantastic experience: A very friendly place and my grandson going there
Positive experience: I would prefer the new facility to be 24 hour access, but other than that I like both YMCA facilities.
Fantastic experience: Incredible facility. Highly recommend!!
Negative experience: I walked into the new YMCA that is incredibly amazing, but as soon as I walked in to check everything out someone offered a tour and got told by front desk that that can not happen and I was told to leave, the front desk staff are so disrespectful. UNREAL!!
Fantastic experience: Great place......
Fantastic experience: Such a fantastic place the new building is amazing staff is awesome
Negative experience: The new facility is very nice and the equipment is also very nice. However, the staff is so unprofessional that if I could give a 0 star review, I would. They will suspend your membership if you breathe improperly. If you wear flip flops, they'll suspend you, if you wear a cut off, they'll suspend you. If you don't wipe down the equipment in between sets WHEN YOU ARE STILL USING IT, they'll suspend you. They do not give any warnings either. They will not call you to let you know that they are suspending your membership. They watch every move you make to try and find a way to suspend you. The staff is a joke. Go to anytime fitness for the extra money. Ill probably get suspended for writing this review.
Fantastic experience: Caring compassionate
Fantastic experience: I love this place! The staff are all knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. It is a truly great place, and a godsend for me as I am currently working about 24 miles south in Adams, WI. Also, it has an excellent pool for swimming laps and a hot tub as well. Keep up the great work team YMCA!!
Negative experience: Really is aggravating you don’t take the time to update your hours. 20 minutes to get there find out your closed when clearly states open!
Negative experience: Fun place to be but hours are not up to date and when you look at the hours it will say open but they are closed
Fantastic experience: Love the Y. Great staff! Sauna is awesome.
Positive experience: They host a good variety of equipment with usually a good and friendly staff. The hours are subject to change with holidays and winter/summer. I personally made the decision to go to anytime fitness because of these reasons and others.
