Our comment from Nutrifinder.net about University Health Service, University of Michigan:

University Health Service (UHS) at the University of Michigan offers a wide array of health services tailored specifically for students. Many users have praised the clinic for its dedicated medical staff and comprehensive care. Some highlights include:

  • Excellent medical staff: Several patients have reported positive experiences with physicians such as Dr. Wilcox and Dr. Vance, who are described as kind, empathetic, and thorough in their approach.
  • Convenient location: UHS is well-placed within the university, making it easily accessible for students.
  • Wide range of services: From general health issues to specialized care, UHS is recognized for being a one-stop shop with facilities for x-rays, lab work, and pharmacy services on-site.
  • Quick appointments: Many users appreciated the relatively quick service with reports of being seen shortly after their scheduled appointment times.

However, feedback also highlights some significant areas for improvement:

  • Lack of empathy: Several users noted experiences where staff lacked interpersonal skills or compassion, especially among receptionists, leading to feelings of disrespect.
  • Long wait times: Patients have expressed frustration over delays in being seen, with reports of waiting long past their appointments without any communication from staff.
  • Scheduling issues: Many remarked on the difficulties faced while trying to schedule appointments, with complaints about rude staff and inefficient response times over the phone.

In summary, while University Health Service at the University of Michigan provides valuable healthcare services with many committed providers, there remains a need for improving staff communication and empathy as well as streamlining the appointment scheduling process.

Negative experience: Worst student health clinic ever. They cannot see you for an urgency or emergency. You’re on your death bed? Best of luck we can see you tomorrow. If at least they had the bare minimum interpersonal skills and showed some empathy but they just treat you like you’re some gum stuck on their shoe (especially the guy in the front). They will not even have the kindness to suggest where else you might go.

Fantastic experience: One stop shop - they have x-ray and lab work upstairs, as well as a pharmacy! There also is rarely a wait: i.e. if your appointment is at 10am, you are called in at 10:02am :).

Thank you for taking the time to send a review. UHC is delighted you had a positive experience. We strive to provide quality health care and will continue our efforts.

Negative experience: The pharmacy workers are incompetent, and are less helpful than a blind man giving directions

Hannah McCrae 11 months ago

Fantastic experience: The nurses, doctors, and receptionists are all so kind and dedicated to helping you find out what’s wrong- even when it takes several visits!

Christopher Zhang 11 months ago

Negative experience: Saw the optometrist at UHS who gave me a stronger prescription (than my previous year's prescription) for contacts. The new contacts made my vision blurry while I never had the same issue with my old glasses. I asked the doctor about it, but he said that issue would go away with time. The issue never went away, and I eventually got another eye exam. My new doctor told me that my prescription was too strong, which is why my vision was blurry. Lower prescription contacts fixed the issue.

Fantastic experience: Really good service, from the admin staff to the medical staff. Special mention for Dr. Wilcox for being an outstanding physician.

Fantastic experience: Super friendly staff. Fit me in last minute as a walk-in, in the span of 30-45 minutes I’d gotten a chest xray and already picked up most of the medication they prescribed at their pharmacy. Super fast and thorough treatment.

Negative experience: They constantly make appointments then cancel them at the last second. This past time they did it after I was sitting in the lobby for a half hour. The doctors are top notch, the support staff is bottom of the barrel.

Tim Chung 1 year ago

Negative experience: Always wait for 30+ minutes beyond appointment time to see the doctor. Please plan additional time ahead.

Thank you for posting a review and we apologize for the prolonged wait time you experienced. Your message will be forwarded to the UHS Patient Relations Specialist, if you would like to communicate with them directly, please email them [email protected]. Again, thank you for your feedback.

Negative experience: My physician told me that only two out of the three lab tests were going to be covered by my insurance. I go down to billing to determine which one was not covered and it was the Basic Metabolic Panel. This same day, I go upstairs to the labs and walk into the clinic. There was no communication from the medical staff because patients had to sign in on a clipboard. They called a patient's name that sounded similar to my name and I stood up, thinking my name was called and went up to the medical professional saying, “Hi, I do not want to do the basic metabolic panel because it is not covered by my insurance.” She directed me to another person at the front desk realizing that I was different from her patient. So I walked up to the counter and told the woman repeating my request, and she told me, “Oh I am not taking care of you today he is” pointing at her colleague who was three feet away. He takes me back to the room where he will be taking my blood. At this time my mom calls me, talking about the test that isn't covered and I just tell her I won't be taking the Basic Metabolic Panel today. This medical assistant was in the room with me during this conversation and he was also in the room when I told the other two medical professionals. Once again, I tell him, “FYI, I do not want to take the basic metabolic panel today because it is not covered by my insurance.” He immediately got annoyed with me and had an attitude asking, “You're not taking it?” I said no. He then leaves the room to reprint the stickers for the order or something and starts the process of drawing my blood. He was very short with me and rushed through the entire procedure. His instructions like “straighten your arm” or “keep still” etc. were so rude and disrespectful. He made me feel like I was just a task he had to check off his to do list. After the procedure he said, “You're good to go. You can take the metabolic panel another day but in the future just let one of us know if you don't want to take a test.” I replied, “I did.” I tried to inform them multiple times but I was ignored by three different people. Prior to going to the lab, I received bad news about my health and I was overwhelmed and feeling pretty down. Then going to the lab and being treated like I was a mannequin or a box to check was very upsetting. Horrible service from UHS Lab Services and I would never want to treat anyone like the way he treated me. I refuse to be treated by that incompetent medical professional again. He had no compassion or care for his patients and this behavior needs to be corrected.

Fantastic experience: I always have a great experience here. Dr Shamoli Khanderia, who is the best primary care physician I ever had (and I had many - lol) is very patient, careful and holds me accountable when it comes to managing my metabolic issues. She always takes her time to explain things to me in detail and listens to my worries. I really have the impression that we are working on my health as a team and that I am not left alone with all my chronic diseases. Everybody else, from nurses to receptionists have always been nice and patient with me, a foreigner with a lot of anxiety. The people in the lab are also very nice.

Elle Sawyer 2 years ago

Negative experience: Overall a pretty bad experience. I had an appointment in women's health that was supposed to just be a 20 consultation. The main entrance reception was not helpful. And the women's health receptionist was incredibly rude. I arrived to my appointment 20 minutes early to do any required forms. I waited for over 40 minutes PAST my appointment time to be seen by the nurse. And then 25 minutes after that to see the doctor. My doctor was really sweet. HOWEVED, because of the delayed appointment I missed another obligation.

Fantastic experience: I have been seeing Dr. Vance ever since I started school here at UofM. She is the most genuine, caring, and understanding physician that I have not had in years. I highly recommend her!

Fantastic experience: I've had to frequent UHS for many things over the last 5 years and was always met with the most helpful and knowledgeable staff and providers. I even went to UHS to get second opinions after my primary care physician couldn't give me the time of day for my concerns. Thank you for taking care of me throughout college and I hope everyone else has a great experience with them.

Negative experience: The staff are either depressed here or they hate their job :)) the lady who was making the appointment over the phone was almost screaming on me aggressively when I asked her to give me an appointment for afternoon instead of morning, since I was too ill to get out of the bed early. It is fine, I hope she feels mentally better.

Fantastic experience: I have been going to UHS for years, my PCP, Jasmine Parvaz, MD Phd. is simply amazing. I am able to get an appointment quickly for urgent needs. She is always there responding to my portal messages quickly with excellent advice. I really can't imagine going any place else for my medical care.

Negative experience: I had a terrible experience at UHS and won’t be returning. An older male staff member made an extremely inappropriate comment about my body. As a 19 year old female, I was very uncomfortable. Aside from this, the staff seemed very unorganized and unprofessional. The only positive interaction I had was with a nurse.

Negative experience: I was just there for a 15 minute appointment, and the staff was so rude that I just walked out. I will not deal with the blatant disrespect. I followed the directions that the receptionist gave me exactly, and once I got there was rudely yelled at to leave because I was in the wrong spot. I went back downstairs, and the receptionist repeatedly told me to go to the wrong spot.

Negative experience: Editing my review to say the five stars are down to one. This must’ve changed all the staff. I’ve never met more rude and unhelpful staff. I recommend staying home and being sick there. You’ll just get more sick here anyway. Honestly you’d be better off laying outside and dying slowly than seeking care here. Go else where. GREAT experience here. I’ve been to more than average university health services bc of my job and this is by far the best performing one. I’ll also note that the receptionist I spoke to was super kind and considerate.

Negative experience: I visited the eye clinic for contact lenses. The doctor knew my vision coverage but still prescribed me precision1 which is not an in-network contact lens. I have to pay $90 for fitting and $32 for just 3-month contact lenses. I don't know why the doctor didn't prescribe me an in-network contact lens which is free of all charges.

Thank you for reaching out, and I apologize you had a 1-star experience at UHS. I will be forwarding your message to the appropriate department so they can investigate your complaint further.

Negative experience: Went in to hopefully get antibiotics for my cough and congestion. Waited an hour for the doctor who proceeded to ask me if she thought this was related to my cancer that I had 6 years ago. Worst medical experience I have ever had…and I have had cancer.

I apologize you had a less-than-great experience at UHS. We do strive to provide the best care we can. I will share your concerns with our patient relations team.

Negative experience: Please do not come here. First of all, it took me two days to make an appointment for a small ailment. Then I finally get to UHS and the people are just so rude it’s insane. I am seen by a NP, she was nice. I was prescribed something and they told me to wait twenty minutes for the pharmacy to open. So I waited and then they tell me they don’t take my insurance (they had insurance information the whole time just so you know). So then I went to CVS. Absolutely terrible experience and no respect for people’s time.

Negative experience: I went in there to get a feel about what was wrong with me. I was so sick I had lost 12 lbs over the course of a week, and had severe muscle aches and couldn’t walk more than a 1/4 mile without needing to take a break. Among many other things. I had taken at home tests and all came back negative for COVID. But a PCR test came back positive. And instead of offering anything to try to help me feel better I was told to go home and basically cope. God awful. Ran extremely poorly. Go literally anywhere else for medical attention.

Fantastic experience: I had a really great experience with the travel immunization clinic and the laboratory. The RN Michelle was very nice, and did a great job explaining everything I would need to know concerning my vaccinations and health/wellness while traveling abroad. The nurse who drew my blood listened to me and drew from a location on my body I am most comfortable with. I received my lab results with 24 hours. Very pleased with my experience at UHS.

Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us. We enjoy hearing feedback from patients. I will make sure to let the clinic staff know. Thanks and have a great day and trip.

Fantastic experience: These guys do a miracle supporting the whole UofM community with medical services at zero or very low cost to the students, relatively quickly. I've been using their services for 6 years, and they are hardworking and kind. I honestly do not understand why their rating is so low, but probably due to spoiled undergrads who still aren't aware of how the health system in the US is really rough (to say the least) and don't realize what an awesome service UHS provides.

Thank you for your kinds words and review. We strive to provide top-quality care to all our patients and support the well-being of U-M students.

Negative experience: Jeffery schedules appointments and he is frankly mean and unhelpful. Very condescending and does not answer any questions. Taylor Denby 4 years ago

Negative experience: As a student here, UHS is impossible to deal with. They’re impossible to get a hold of since they don’t answer the phone the majority of times. Their hours are useless for students in classes since by the time students have a free moment they’re closed. Receptionists are rude many times. Their online appointment system is useless, they end up just calling you and if you don’t answer you’re out of luck because they aren’t going to answer when you call back. Getting an appointment is impossible. I was hit by a car last week and told by my campus job to get checked by UHS. They didn’t even answer the phone. I have had injuries and infections gone untreated because of how difficult UHS is to get ahold of and get an appointment in. The university can do a lot better than this.

Samantha Harinck 4 years ago

Negative experience: The pharmacy is great, they’re super quick and accommodating but i wouldn’t come here for anything else. The receptionist was so incredibly rude to me that another staff member apologized to me for it. The treatment they prescribed for me didn’t work and I ended up having to go to an urgent care anyway - you’re better off just going there.

University Health Service, University of Michigan

Thank you for your feedback. A positive experience for all who enter UHS is important to us. I am forwarding your review to our patient relations. Someone will reach out to you to address your experience.

Andy 4 years ago

Negative experience: Never expect that you would be able to receive any service and support from them…. UHS only accepts reservation via phone, but you would hardly be able to dial in (at least 30min waiting time on phone, you can’t do it in between classes!) Once you finally dialed in and ask for a reservation for a health issue you have, they would ask you to wait for another 24 hours until a nurse checks the condition you described and gets back to you later. Then, however, you wait for 24 hours without receiving a single message from them. Yes, you again try to dial in but simply can’t get through by the time they close their door, another circle begins…. I think they are gonna watch you die here

University Health Service, University of Michigan

Hi Andy, we're sorry about the long wait to receive help. Due to COVID-19 all services are appointment only and as a result UHS is experiencing a high volume of calls. In the future, email us at [email protected] to receive a call back to schedule an appointment. You should hear back from us within 24 hours. If you are experiencing an emergency please call 911. I will forward your feedback to our patient relations.

Negative experience: You can only schedule appointments by phone, and they make you listen to advertisements and a whole bunch of information before connecting you, which is a huge waste of time. The doctor and nurses are nice though

Fantastic experience: Dr Vance is an incredible doctor and a wonderfully kind and patient human being! Definitely my favorite doctor and the best experience with a medical professional that I've ever had! I have generally had very good experiences at UHS, so very happy to go there. Fantastic experience: Dr. Wilcox was very kind and understanding and helped me get down to what my issue was even though it ended up being a little weird and not what you would expect. Mariah Kohles 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: Dr. Wilcox is a GIFT to medicine, to Michigan, and to every patient that gets to work with her. She is compassionate, caring, trauma-informed, extremely intelligent, and inclusive of underrepresented identities. Dr. Wilcox is the only doctor I have ever felt truly safe with and cared for holistically. She saved my life last year and I could not thank her enough for everything she has done for me and others. I could not recommend her enough to anyone seeking a truly caring and dedicated physician. Area of improvement: the appointment call center is awful to work with. It is so inconsistent and difficult to get good customer care. Additionally it is deeply concerning as a patient to have call center staff read portal messages out loud while truly to schedule appt. It doesn't feel hippa compliant or fair to patient privacy.

University Health Service, University of Michigan

Hello Mariah and thank you for your positive feedback about your experiences Dr. Wilcox – it’s wonderful to hear! I’m sorry that you’ve had difficult experiences with the Call Center. Fantastic experience: Dr. Hudson is amazing, I would recommend her to anybody. I definitely recommend establishing a relationship with a Dr. at UHS to all incoming students. Throughout my time as a student, I have regularly had appointments with her. Despite months between my visits she keeps up with my health concerns and always checks in on loose ends for the last visit. Overall, she listens deeply to all my concerns and leaves no stone unturned. She is never dismissive. I have visited UHS for immunizations and blood draws as well, the immunizations staff is so kind and always puts me at ease. Like any doctors office, it can be difficult to secure appointments on short notice, but the patient portal helps me track and request refills on short notice, and I can see when I will need to come in for a prescription renewal on the portal so I can schedule ahead of time. Definitely set up the portal and download the app.

Negative experience: if I could give zero stars I would. wait times are unbelievable, took me three months to even get an appointment. once I got there they bounced me between offices because none of them knew what to do with me as I sobbed. sent me home with nothing after 4 hours. waited two weeks to go back. my psychiatrist is actually fine, but uhs as a whole is horrible. if you are the patient relations person and do not comment on this review. every time i go to the pharmacy they're dismissive and rude. they lie and forget about medications, making me wait weeks for things I need daily. treatments of students is abysmal. I could write essays about this but I'll say this: don't waste your time, uhs will just make whatever is wrong even worse.

University Health Service, University of Michigan

Hi Chesney, thanks for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience, and I’m sorry it’s been so difficult. I will relay your message to the UHS Patient Relations Coordinator, who you can email directly if desired at [email protected]. Best, Carol Tucker, UHS

Fantastic experience: Dr. Vance is the best. I would recommend her to anyone. I have been to UHS a couple other times and she is the only doctor I would recommend. She went out of her way to help me and was able to correctly diagnose me after I went to an urgent care the day prior and they misdiagnosed me.

University Health Service, University of Michigan

Hi Elena, thanks for letting us know about your positive experience with Dr. Vance at UHS! I will forward your review to our Patient Relations Coordinator. Best, Carol Tucker, University Health Service

Negative experience: I went in the other day because I was experiencing symptoms of the flu and was told that I was just experiencing a bad cold. The nurse did not wait 15 minutes after I had been drinking my freezing water to take my temperature and the doctor dismissed me because I didn’t “look super sick”. (I was wearing makeup). Flash forward to today, when I lost my voice because my sore throat was so severe and had a fever of almost 103° F. I decided to go in to my primary physician and they did a swab test and sure enough I was diagnosed with the flu. I’m disappointed at how the staff here just quickly glanced over my symptoms and did not even bother testing me for a more serious illness. I could have been treated much earlier and have not potentially spread the flu to so many other students if I had known it was more than a cold.

Fantastic experience: My experience was fantastic. Called at 8am, got an appointment for 9:20am on the same day. Check in took seconds and only waited a couple of minutes. Got everything done within 25 mins. Meds prescribed and picked up at the pharmacy in the same building. Everyone was kind, respectful and professional.

Negative experience: My doctor and nurses/all the people doing the checkup were really nice and good. I came in with a respiratory infection and pinkeye and I got super good care. The people trying to get my insurance information AFTER I had left the building were basically incompetent. The woman calls me on the phone and says I still have to pay for the appointment and I’m not insured (even though I thought the health center was included in my fees to the university) and then I’m frantically calling my dad figuring out what to do, still sick. I call them back, start speaking to a totally different person, where he informs me that I had nothing to pay for the appointment (shocker!). So nobody asked for my insurance information or payment information before or after the appointment, nobody even informs me as to whether or not I even have to pay, then they call me while I’m trying to recover from my illness about not having payed, then they backtrack when a new person gets on the phone. Not to mention they were all impolite at the reception and pharmacy. How do you expect a student who’s starting their first time away from home to navigate this stuff with no guidance and so much confusion?

University Health Service, University of Michigan

Thank you for your feedback. Please contact me at [email protected] so you and I can have a more in-depth conversation about your specific experience at UHS. I look forward to connecting with you and hope to help make your next experience less confusing.

Negative experience: The doctors don't listen and the nurses ignore you. They don't listen long enough to get the spelling of your name correct let alone hear your sumptoms, especially Betty Hmays and Lisa White.

Sarah, it sounds like you feel you were not heard. I am sorry to hear that. I would like to discuss this with you further. If possible, please email me at [email protected]. We can set up a time to talk about your concerns in person or over the phone if you'd like.

Fantastic experience: Deciding to write a review because I am shocked by all the negative ones on here. I have been going to UHS for the past four years and I have nothing but great things to say about the place. I see Dr. Corrigan and he's one of the most kind, empathetic, and understanding doctors out there. At times when he was unavailable and I really needed to be seen, he referred me to colleagues at the UHS who were also equally as phenomenal as him. The doctors at UHS really excel in making themselves accessible to their patients by being responsive to portal/phone messages as well. The administrative staff/nurses/PAs are always friendly and so thoughtful. I will never forget the time I walked up to the front desk in one of the specialty clinics in the UHS and told a male receptionist I had been referred here by my doctor to make an appointment. He responded by saying I was technically at the wrong place but he could schedule me one anyway. He pulled up my record and asked, "do you need to be seen for" and paused. He looked around, noticing there was people behind me, and pulled out a sticky note and wrote down my health condition and slid it to me from across the table. Now he probably could have whispered it or mouthed it, but he did not want to risk it.. this experience is pretty exemplary of how considerate and diligent the UHS faculty/administration is in their job of protecting patient privacy and making them feel comfortable. All around I would recommend this place to anyone.

University Health Service, University of Michigan

Hi Anna, thanks for taking time to share some of your positive experiences. Our staff love to hear when things go well! I'll share your message with our Medical Director and other appropriate managers, so they are aware. By the way, patients routinely indicate high levels of satisfaction in our patient satisfaction survey. During winter 2018, 88% of patients reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their experience at UHS. So we know that most patients do have positive experiences at UHS. Thanks again for sharing yours! Best, Carol Tucker, Patient Relations Coordinator, University Health Service, University of Michigan

Negative experience: I had Dr. Wilcox. She did not use a speculum when giving me a pap smear. She also jabbed me real hard. I cramped and bled after she gave me a pap smear. What a dumb technique. Probably thinks she is a genius by stabbing people. Also when I gave her my address she intentionally spelled bur in my street address. I have rarely seen this woman in the past six years, how am I a bur Also I am bipolar, she acts like my son was a huge mistake when people have accidents all the time and get knocked up. Well getting knocked up again, sorry.......

Negative experience: I had an appointment with the dermatologist at UHS at 2:15 and I got there at 2:00. However, the garage there was under construction and I can not find a parking spot anywhere near it. I finally got one spot two blocks away. When I got there, they told me that I was late for more than 5 minutes and I have to reschedule the appointment. I got late because of the poor service. Now I have to wait for half a month with the rash on my skin and suffer from the irritation. I will never choose to see the doctors there.

Negative experience: The parking lot is always full. I had a 2:15pm appointment and I arrived at the parking lot at 2:00pm. Took me 25 minutes to find parking. I was 10 minutes late and they canceled my appointment. The next one available is 3 weeks away.

Negative experience: The nurses are nice but only some wear gloves during vaccinations. And the GYN was very very rough (I bled for the next day after a standard pap). Update-- For more detail to those interested: I asked your nurse twice to use gloves and she re-stated the 'rule of thumb' you mentioned and refused to wear gloves (her nails were long, she didn't wash her hands, and she touched my bare arm where she injected the needle). As a fellow medical professional, I want you to please keep in mind the WHO training is the minimal instruction for medical professionals being dispatched globally to areas with limited resources. Again, I suggest you take your business elsewhere.

University Health Service, University of Michigan

Hello Chanese, I'm sorry that you had a difficult experience at UHS. I'd like to hear more about it, so we can understand what happened. Would you be willing to call me at 734-647-4657, or email me at [email protected]? (Please note that email is not considered secure.) Thank you also for sharing your concern about wearing gloves. Sometimes patients expect health care workers to wear gloves for any contact with patients, however the World Health Organization recommends: When undertaking injections, DO NOT use gloves: - for routine intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections - if the health worker's skin is intact - if the patient's skin is intact Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK138494/ That said, you can request that our health care workers wear gloves at any time. I hope to hear from you. Best regards, Carol Tucker, UHS Patient Relations Coordinator

Negative experience: I visited Uhs in early September, when I was told that I had a virus and to get some rest. I waited 3 hours for a PA to tell me that I needed to sleep and drink fluids? 2 MONTHS LATER I was still sick so I decided to visit a local urgent care. Needless to say, I have had a severe right ear infection and a sinus infection for 2 months undiagnosed. Thank God I went to urgent care!! I will never use this free health care service again. You're better off paying to visit urgent care.

Fantastic experience: I've been using UHS for a few years now for primary care and they do a great job. Dr. Agnes is absolutely wonderful, both in the Women's Clinic and the Medical Clinic. She is engaged, she listens, and she supports and respects your decisions. When I just need some advice, their nurses give me a call within an hour of me reaching out and are always helpful and friendly. I have no idea with whom these negative reviewers were interacting, because I have never experienced anything less than professional and polite doctors, nurses, and staff. I've had an occasional longer wait time, but no more frequently than any other doctor's office I've visited.

Negative experience: women's center . I scheduled an appt for a time sensitive issue and ended up a few minutes late, which was my fault, so I was rescheduled for the next day. I showed up ON TIME but the lady at the 3rd floor desk was so slow that although there were only two people in front of me it took 12 mins to get there, by which time my appointment had passed again. On top of that she was rude saying it was my fault I showed up late, which I did not. When I have to take time off to drive 30 minutes each way to UHS, take a ton of ibuprofen before each appt for no reason, and show up on time but still not get seen because of incompetence it becomes kind of ridiculous and frustrating. Tbh just save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else.

Hello Rhea, thank you for providing feedback, and I'm sorry that you experienced a problem with checking in. Could you please send me your date of birth so we can look into this? Kim 7 years ago

Negative experience: My experience with UHS has been incredibly frustrating. Communicating with my physician through PatientPortal (website used to communicate with your physician) has made it extremely difficult to get medicine, and it shows the lack of transparency between physician and patient. In December 2017, I came in hoping to be put on Accutane, a medicine used to help with acne, as I have severe acne that has resulted in scars on my face. Doctor evaluated me and deemed me eligible for Accutane. Doctor told me I needed to take a series of pregnancy tests to prove that I was not pregnant (people who get pregnant while on Accutane can give birth to babies that have severe birth defects!) before I could be registered for iPledge. I would take a pregnancy test every month before doctor could register me for the Accutane program called iPledge. So doctor told me I’d be taking one in December (that same day), January, and February. Did the three pregnancy tests. Doctor registers me! Great. At this point, doctor has to send in a request for the medicine to my insurance company to see if they’ll cover it. In other words, my role at this point is to wait and see what the decision is. I get a message from my doctor through PatientPortal a while after my last pregnancy test that they think there was a “lost communication” and now needs me to redo 2 more pregnancy tests so I can be re-registered for iPledge (the program for Accutane that attempts to reduce pregnancy). Snippet from PatientPortal: "I registered you for I pledge a while ago - I think there was a lost communication." At this point, I am frustrated because there was not a lost communication. There can't be a lost communication when we have PatientPortal to link physician and patient. But I want to be positive even though I am very pissed off, because 2 more pregnancy tests means 2 more months of wait time. I go in for the first of the 2 pregnancy tests and I message doctor via PatientPortal so that we will not have a “lost communication” again. Doctor says: "Hi - I just checked - it does not look like the lab is doing the pregnancy test. Did you leave them a urine sample?" I tell doctor I went to the lab and told the people I needed a pregnancy test done for Accutane, and the lab technicians took my blood. Doctor says: "Can not go forward to re-register you in I-pledge until you go to UHS lab and get the pregnancy test done." I am extremely frustrated at this point because as a patient, what more can I do? I listen to my physician and do as I am told. If I need to go in for 2 more pregnancy tests due to some lost communication, I am angry but I will do it. But now the lab people gave me the wrong test, and I am expected to just accept this as fact and go in again for my 5th pregnancy test. What I hear as a patient is: "Your time is not valuable enough for us to do our job right the first time or apologize when something has gone astray on our end." It has been over 4 months, and I doubt I am going to get the medicine at all now. At the very least an apology to the patient. It angers me that I am taking my time to do my part as patient, and when the health care providers' fail to do theirs, they speak to me in a very dry, matter of fact manner. Worst of all, I have no idea what happened between my physician telling me I needed 2 pregnancy tests done and going to the lab to take the wrong test. What happened to that communication? As patients, we are often left in the dark. edit: edited review for UHS staff anonymity edit: reached out by UHS Patient Relations Coordinator, got a nice little phone call from my doctor explaining situation. edit: doc knows I need a prior authorization (urgent so I can get meds by May 2) but DID NOT DO IT!!! doctor had 2 days to do prior auth (last pregnancy test taken Thursday). doc told me to pick up meds ASAP but didn't even fill out prior auth. Now it is Sat and I don't know if I can get meds within I-pledge time frame! :( tl;dr: Tried to get accutane. Dr seems to be purposefully delaying medicine at this point. Beware of Julia Bemer

Negative experience: Save yourself -- GO TO URGENT CARE INSTEAD.......Broke my collarbone, went in to get it looked at. They placed me in a HALLWAY to wait 1 full hour before someone came to take X rays. They made me come in for a follow up, where the guy told me to take vitamins, that's it --> $500 for the dude to tell me to take vitamins. They made me sign a paper saying I'd pay for all services rendered (under threat that they wouldn't do anything for me if i didn't sign) and the paper didn't even say ANYTHING about what the potential cost would be. They charged me $2400 for 1.5 hrs of waiting in their ER plus the vitamin advice. Set up on payments, their system sucks so bad they started sending me notice of "about to go to collections" WHEN I WAS MAKING THE PAYMENTS ON TIME. No value add, ridiculous charges. Crooks.

Negative experience: UHS is a sad excuse for a medical facility. I legitimately question the efficacy and credibility of their staff and encourage anyone to seek treatment at a real doctor's office. I have visited three times for a relatively simple diagnosis, and each time the doctor's inability to communicate effectively in an appropriate manner and offer treatment is not only frustrating but straight up reckless. In particular, my experience with Andrea Ransom was troublesome to say the least. She offered a completely inaccurate diagnosis for my throat symptoms, and was extremely condescending in her approach.

Negative experience: If the goal of UHS is to provide effective and timely treatment options to UMich students and staff, you wouldn't know it based on the quality of care received. I went to UHS as a walk-in due to acute insomnia, feeling that the problem would resolve itself by the time of the next available appointment (which was over a month out). I was reprimanded by the attending physician for utilizing the walk-in option and the physician dismissed me as a drug seeker for requesting a specific pharmaceutical intervention that I have found effective when previously prescribed for short periods of time. The fact that the abuse potential for Z-drugs is indisputably negligible seemed to be of no relevance to the physician, who ultimately prescribed me an anti-depressant with questionable effectiveness in treating insomnia. My advice to students: use your parents' insurance (or even Medicaid) to seek treatment elsewhere, whether through an internist, a general practitioner, or an urgent care center.

Negative experience: Relatively fast service, but scheduling is poor, and the staff tends to be relatively rude.

Raissa Carvalho-Ruehle 7 years ago

Negative experience: The service is terrible. You're never attended at the time scheduled, buy if you are late you will lose your appointment (even with a very good reason). They put people in front of you in line, even when you are waiting in the room. When you call, people are very rude with you and doesn't care why you are calling. The one in the women's clinic is the worst. They looks at your chart andrepeats what is there. They make your medical life around the clinic, so when you graduate and can no longer go there, there's no support. You cannot contact the nurse if you need, everythings is very slow and the policy of UofM health system as a whole doesn't favor the patient at all. You sre just a little subject for the students to learn, not an actual sick person. Avoid if you can. Go to a regular doctor, to a normal care.

Joseph Emantsal 7 years ago

Negative experience: Everything takes forever. I would much rather pay my $25 copay than go here if I catch an unexpected illness. Would only recommend if you want to see someone for a less than trivial matter and if you also have time to kill.

Oliver Li 8 years ago

Negative experience: Terrible service. God awful manners and inability to help people who need it. Everyone who works here is generally rude and does not care for your well being. The inefficiency of UHS is reprehensible and the workers are always complaining and yelling at each other, as well as giving patients disgustingly mean and angry responses.

Fantastic experience: Excellence practiced here...

Chin-Yu Ginny Lu 8 years ago

Negative experience: The people who book appointments on the phone are the rudest receptionists ever. They have no patience to explain things to you, and when you ask for an explanation, they act as though you have a brain tumour and therefore cannot think for yourself. They therefore raise their voices, as though that would remedy the "situation". This is another clear instance of why the government ought to have NOTHING to do with our lives: when there is no profit margin to worry about, and it is next to impossible to fire staff, there is no incentive to provide good service.
