Our comment from Nutrifinder.net about University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown:
The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown offers a range of services with a focus on patient care and support. Many users appreciate the clean and welcoming environment of the facility.
The positive experiences include excellent care from nursing and medical staff, particularly in the Labor/Delivery and Maternity departments, where families have noted the compassionate and attentive care they received.
However, there are notable concerns regarding long wait times and communication issues. Many have reported extended delays in receiving updates about loved ones in post-operative care and expressed dissatisfaction with certain members of the staff.
Billing and administrative processes have also drawn negative feedback, with several users experiencing significant challenges in resolving billing inquiries and obtaining itemized statements.
Overall, while the medical care provided at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown has been praised, logistical aspects such as billing and communication may benefit from improvement to enhance the patient and family experience.
University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown: Reviews
Negative experience: I miss the old Mercy. I waited for over 4 hrs for updates on my mom in post op. Each hour I walked to the nurses station and got different answers. None satisfying and each passing hour it became clear that their process has no advocate or champion for the patient or their family. This place is like a ghost town of forgotten toys.
Fantastic experience: Small and quite clean
Negative experience: My grandma was recently on the telemetry unit. She received good care from most of her nurses and doctors, but we also had a rough experience with one of the nurses. After 45 minutes of waiting for an RN (after shift change Tuesday night), I was told that my grandma's agitation was not urgent or an emergency, and that we (family) were making her anxiety worse by coming out to the nurse's station to ask for assistance. It took an hour to get a nurse to her room... maybe that's what we should have expected, but the total lack of compassion was unwarranted and unacceptable. I would have filed a formal grievance, but didn't catch the nurse's name.
Fantastic experience: Had family appt was in and out able to visit while another was at the VA.
Negative experience: As good as service can get in terms of hospital. The part where these guys FAIL at is the billing after. I've been trying to pay my bill for MONTHS! I understand how this hospital went bankrupt and belly up because they almost refuse to take my money. I called and asked for an itemized statement initially. When I got it, I called to set up payment plan and before I could make the first payment, I got disconnected (maybe hung up on?). I called again on a later date, I was told that I could not pay until the plan was finished being set up and I got my new statement. I went MONTHS without getting a new statement and I called to find out what happened in fear of being sent to collections....after being connected with someone...they said that the hospital was bought out and I needed to set up a new payment plan under their new system. We did that and I made an initial payment and never heard nothing back from them. I've called multiple times since then and was told they could not find my account. After many attempts over the following weeks, I was able to get someone that finally pulled up my account and sent the new statements to me. TODAY I spent 2 hours trying to call on the statement I got...I was disconnected 5 times before I was able to talk to someone. I paid a payment on one of five accounts...after i was read my confirmation number I was disconnected again. I called back and kept getting disconnected multiple more times until the next lady answered. She took my info and said that someone would call me back once they were available. Almost an hour had gone by and I still have not heard nothing back so I tried calling back again....and shocker....I was unable to get anyone and i kept calling until they closed and had to leave a voicemail. I've never had such a hard time to give someone my money....this is almost comical...I just want to pay my bill. Someone please help.....
Negative experience: Every since the UI bought this hospital they become stupid and dumb in the ER just like the UI ER doctors
Fantastic experience: We received excellent care in the Labor/Delivery and Maternity departments. The nursing staff and the doctors were available and helpful throughout our 2-day stay. Beautiful, clean and spacious facilities. Special shoutout to Dr. Stephens and nurses Mary Beth and Kali.
Fantastic experience: Excellent hospital, dignified treatment, very kind, all the staff strive to do everything possible to make children with cancer happy.
Fantastic experience: Everyone is friendly and eager to help.
Thank you for this feedback! We appreciate it!
Fantastic experience: So thankful the ER at the former Mercy is still available! My husband received wonderful care yesterday. We appreciated the short time in the waiting room.
Hi Rhonda, we appreciate the feedback!
Negative experience: They seemed nice. Told them my symptoms and they gave me pain killers for pain but never dealt with the problem, I'm in pain again same as before less than 2 days later. Probably thousands of dollars and 5 wait time. Also someone was suppose to call me never recieved call, left voicemauk and nobody called me back. 1 star for being nice, the other 4 if you would've not pushed me out the door with basically a bandaid fix.
Hi Stacy, we’d like to connect you with one of our patient relations specialists so we can learn more about this. If you would be willing to speak to a staff member about your concerns, please contact [email protected] or call 319-356-1802.
Fantastic experience: Great wound clinic care
Fantastic experience: Words cannot begin to explain how thankful I am for Dr. Tanner Davis. He made me feel heard, advocated on my behalf, and genuinely seemed concerned about my condition. The nurses there are all very kind as well.
Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback, Shannon! If you are interested in sharing more about your story, you are welcome to submit the form found here: http://uihc.org/story. Best wishes to you and your family!
Positive experience: Took my son to the ER for an allergic reaction to some pistachios. We were called back immediately. Registration was great, then a nurse named Monte (who was also great) checked us in and took us to a room. After a rough patch that lasted awhile, including hives, the nurse (LaDana) and doc gave him meds, including epinephrine, and after about four hours, we were taken to the peds unit for an overnight stay. We had the two BEST nurses in Emma and Stephanie! The next day, I heard from a friend that her brother & niece went to the ER at the University for a freak accident, and they waited FOUR hours until they were called back. This was not my first experience with Mercy ER (well, now U of I HC) and we've NEVER had to wait that long. Thank you Mercy for taking care of my kiddo in this time of stress.
Hi Jenn, we're sorry to hear your friend had an extended wait. Our wait times are dependent on several factors, including the severity and urgency of presenting patients and the number of treatment rooms available. We understand it's not easy to wait, and we appreciate your feedback. If you or your friend would like to speak to a staff member about your concerns, please contact our Office of the Patient Experience at 319-356-1802 or [email protected].
Negative experience: Walked in was told to see my primary care giver recieved a $2000 bill for no treatment. Hope university of iowa gets this place straightened out
Negative experience: Mercy has been a great option for my father in the past, but as of our past visit he has really let him down in a big way. My father was practically unable to walk when he left the facility and shaking uncontrollably. Not only was he pumped up with Oxy during his visit … he was sent home with no pain meds at the time of his release. Let me add my father can not make choices for himself and I was not called for any updates other than the first day he was in the hospital to ask if he needed to go to a nursing home when he leaves from treatment. If I would have known what I know now I would have never brought him here! You expect your loved ones to be in good care when you take him to a hospital for help but instead you have to babysit the care team because they don’t know how to communicate. I feel we we’re complete blind sighted and honestly pushed out the door without results . Be your loved ones advocate my friends… because ultimately you’re all they have in these times! These doctors don’t care!
Negative experience: ER staff doesn't have a clue You go into the ER for something else as asked you for your past history of mental health and take it the wrong way and assume you are there for psychiatric care. Hold you and ship you to a place to be committed to a psychiatric facility for mental evaluation the ER doctor and staff has no clue. The real reason for the visit. Go to University Hospital instead
Negative experience: If I could give Labor And Delivery 0 Stars I would. By the time I was mentally strong enough to sue, the 2 year window to do so had expired, & then I remembered Im a top performing google reviewer, & that still gives me at best a platform to possibly ignite change. I was already uncomfortable with the level of care I was receiving in Iowa. I was extremely sick during my 1st trimester & I honestly felt like my care team looked and me and said…..she has thick skin, SHE CAN HANDLE IT!! So I drove back and forth to where I’m originally from for 8 months to get prenatal care, until my husband became ill and was put in Mercy ICU for a week. They were amazing to us. So good that I decided to switch my prenatal care back to Iowa so I could deliver close in case he recovered slow. My doctor at the OBGYN specialty clinic in Coralville was amazing, very knowledgeable & kind. After that here is where it gets dark and graphic, but please understand, I just want to warn other pregnant women, RUN!!! I was almost 2 weeks late & the weekend before I was to be induced, my water broke at home. My family rushed me in & the nurses team was nice upon greeting, then I quickly learned that these people didn’t know ANYTHING, & may as well had been an Old Testament Care team with the level of outdated care and equipment in this branch of the hospital. The delivering doctor was mean, & cold, nothing like the doctor at the OBGYN CLinic. She would barge in and just shove her hands inside me, no instructions, no prep on how to position my body for the least pain. It was like she was doing it on purpose. I finally remembered how the OBGYN clinic doctor would position me so I laid like that in prep for her arrival. It to 4 sticks to get the epidural inside my back, which 1 or 2 is dangerous enough but 4! It took me 29 hrs to get 10 centimeters dialed & the worse part is, that little button to distribute meds was NEVER GIVEN TO ME!!! No wait the worse part is my daughter experienced meconium in the womb which they discovered when I arrived & still let her stay in me for 29hrs!!! Back to the meds, I didn’t even know I was supposed to have the button to distribute them until the day nurse came and told me I didn’t need to call her for it, it was up to me to push as needed. The night nurse made me call for her EVERYTIME I wanted to push it, & sometimes would tell me no!! The button was made to distribute in non concerning doses but she just WATCHED ME SUFFER!! It only gets worse so strap in! When it was time to push, we realized one of the foot stirrups was broken, but instead of rebedding me, they tried to hold it in place with a giant MAIL RUBBERBAND, then when that STUPID idea didn’t work, they had a nurse attempt to hold it in place for the hr it took them to realize my 10lbs baby wasn’t gonna come out vaginally! Prep for c-section was a disaster!!! None of the nurses could get a second IV line in my are and THE WHOLE DEPARTMENT TOOK TURNS TRYING!!!! At least 6 nurses stuck me multiple times, & then they just said F it! Send her in without it! They didn’t even tell the anesthesiologist!! He discovered it when I got it the room & demanded I have one, took him 10 seconds to put it in!! Then my husband is a big man so his scrubs didn’t fit. They were to give him bigger ones & send him in. NEVER HAPPENED!! He was told I loss so much blood that it wasn’t something he needed to see! WHO ARE YOU TO DECIDE THAT!!! I NEEDED HIM!!! To protect me from the doctor who sliced through me with NO MERCY!! I SCREAMED SO LOUD!!! She basically just shut me down, I FELT EVERYTHING!!!! I may as well not have had the epidural. I screamed so loud the anesthesiologist finally gasses me and knocked me out.woke up to a baby with low blood sugar due to a STOMACH INFECTION she developed in the womb!! The NIC at Mercy is very limited on what they can do, & in 2019 the only modern thing was the door to gain access. It was dark old and cold. Day 2 I came to hold my baby and noticed she was swollen & turning purplish around the mouth. Then she started spewing green bile.
Negative experience: Horrible experience. Enough said. Transferred to U of I. Will NEVER go back.
Fantastic experience: Mercy hospital Iowa city is the best hospital in this area. It's been here for numerous years and it has wonderful staff and carrying doctors.
Negative experience: Terrible experience in the ER. The night shift is horrible. We took our daughter in after the triage nurse said we should have her seen. They asked if my husband was her father. The room we were in didn’t have a thing the doctor needed to look in her ears or throat. They left the door open every time they came in or out. The nurse was terrible. She tried to give our daughter too much medicine. When my husband told the nurse it was too much she acted like we knew nothing. We told her she wasn’t giving her anything. The nurse left and came back in and said she was giving out daughter that amount of medicine. I told her she wasn’t and to get the discharge papers. The nurse left and never came back. We could hear them talking at the desk and they were just sitting around talking when we decided to walk out. Marcy used to be our go to hospital but we will never go there again.
Fantastic experience: we've always received wonderful care at Mercy!
Negative experience: The ICU nurses and doctors refuse to tell me anything going on with my husband of 17 years . But told his step daughter from another marriage who he really hasn't seen and over 18 years all about him over the phone. And asked her about his medical history. After getting consistent from him when on 11/03/23: right after he got transferred there and it was and still is completely visible that has nor is coherent enough to make his own choice
Negative experience: How can they operate, or even make money, without doing tests? The Head, and followers of the ER are a joke.
Negative experience: My dad collapsed and we had to do cpr on him. Went to Mercy and was told he was fine. Went to the U later that week and has a weak heart and needs a new valve. No wonder they are being shut down. Absolute buns.
Negative experience: I went in at the advisement of a triage nurse I spoke with on the phone. I was then lead to a room where they forgot to close the door and then the nursing staff at the desk proceeded to mock me and laugh at my expense behind the desk “what does she think? She’s a medical anomaly”. Then when I got upset and asked Dr Joe if I could please just leave they treated me for anxiety- THEY CAUSED. Dr Joe then proceeded to tell me that the nurses that just so happened to reference my room number and symptoms were definitely talking about someone else- as if that would make it more appropriate. So thanks pregnant nurse Cory for your lack empathy. I will never go back. Nurse Jamie was the only one worth a damn.
Negative experience: Terrible experience. Went in w my son via ambulance. No attention for over an hour after. Ten plus folks sitting at the desk laughing and eating. Interestingly they are going broke.
Positive experience: Awesome hospital. Kind people in every position. The nurses on the 4th floor surgical unit are outstanding.
Fantastic experience: I moved up to the area in June and have had to go to the ER twice. Everyone from the front desk, to being checked, and treated by nurses and doctors has been absolutely wonderful - respectful, kind, caring, very thorough and extremely professional! I feel very fortunate to live near what I consider to be one of the best hospitals.
Fantastic experience: This hospital is always excellent. Short wait times and attentive care from experienced professionals
Negative experience: My mother has been hospitalized 3 times in the past year and each time she was at Mercy the staff was very impatient with her and this last time some of the nurses were down right rude! Not at all the kind of behavior you would expect from professionals! She had to wait over an hour in soiled clothes and over a half hour all of the other times she pushed the call button! One of the nurses told her that she didn't have time to come every time my mother had a need!!!! Nurses take care of people who are sick, in pain or scared/confused and they need to remember that and be as gracious as possible! I hope my mother never has to to go back to this hospital!!!
Negative experience: Nurses here are the rudest people I have ever met. A shame people have to be treated by adult children.
Fantastic experience: Went to ER got admitted the doctors, techs, aides and nurses (especially Presleigh) were very caring and helpful Glad I went to Mercy this time instead of the UofI
Negative experience: TERRIBLE CARE AT NIGHT Last night was very bad with vomiting and bad blood pressure. I had been like this since 4 in the afternoon. The night started off well until the nurse took the IV and never in my life did I An injection had hurt so much, the pain was so much that I ended up crying, my husband was very worried because he knows that injections don't hurt me, after that they do a series of medical tests and I never got to see them, the doctor came to the room saying that everything was perfect and that I could leave, something that seemed very strange to me and I let him know, and his concern was so much that he sent me home. When I arrived at the hospital my blood pressure was at 119 and just as I was leaving it was at 125, which seemed strange to me, I felt bad and even vomited and even so, she sent me home. and that she couldn't give me a diagnosis because there are patients she didn't know they had because all the exams went well at FINNN the pathetic care of both the doctor and the nurse
Fantastic experience: Very impressed with my care.
Negative experience: Absolutely terrible urgent care! These people didn’t even take down my husband’s insurance and they’re claiming to do all these tests but not even providing test results. Were they just going to bill us for everything without insurance!!?? We also have to hassle them so much to get the test results back! Like please do your job and atleast give your patients the test results!!! And no doctor saw my husband just nurses and one physician assistant. Avoid this hospital if you can. Huge mistake going there!
Negative experience: Currently there with my husband on the 5th floor. The clanging pipes sounds in the ceiling above his bed makes it impossible for a patient to sleep. Would consider not having this a patient room at all. Not good. Not restful.
Negative experience: Called because I had a fever of over 105 degrees. I had to provide all of my personal information twice to the nurse, and rudely asked me to spell my name out after I had already done this minutes before. Didn't know what "hot flashes" were and acted like I was stupid for listing that as a symptom. Recommended that I "turn on a fan and take a shower" for a fever over 105 degrees that had lasted over a day. Called elsewhere, and they recommended I get to an emergency room as fast as possible
Negative experience: My mother recently had a stay at Mercy and received the most deplorable care. The first night she waited for 30 minutes before blankets were brought to her, and she was left there shivering for that time (there were none in the room). During her 5-day stay, she was very weak and needed assistance with using the bathroom. She sometimes had to wait for an hour after pressing the call button for a nurse, and by then, of course, it was too late. Then she had to sit in wet gown and bedding until a nurse arrived. No one took notice of her special diet, which is gluten and lactose-free, even though she relayed this information several times. No one wrote it down, or added it to her chart. The hospital seemed short-staffed. My mom even used to work at Mercy Hospital, and commented that this was NOT the hospital she used to work for. Since my mom was reasonably alert during her stay, I feel very sorry for the patients who are in worse shape than she, as they can't ask for help. It seems that if you are going to run a hospital, you should take care of your patients. I can't begin to express my rage that Mercy's patients are treated in such a way. I would never want anyone I know to ever stay there again.
Fantastic experience: I can’t thank the staff enough all the way through for being such wonderful people I can’t thank them enough. I was in very rough shape when I come in by ambulance and I believe they saved my life it was a rough couple weeks and I’m sure I put them through hell but thank God they were there and understanding. I highly recommend the facility and again I can’t say enough good about them even The food was well above average for an institution a great place thank you mercy
Fantastic experience: The ER department was fantastic. I went to the ER the morning of 11/23 and was immediately taken to a room and seen by a terrific nurse and then a fantastic physician, I was treated with respect and compassion and everything was clearly explained to me. Dr. Field was outstanding. I highly recommend Mercy's ER.
Fantastic experience: They care I received was wonderful. Everyone was very caring and compassionate.
Positive experience: The nurses that took care of my daughter in the ER 10/07/22 11:15pm were wonderful, however Dr. G.F. was very rude and abrasive. This is already a stressful situation for very sick people they are trusting you with their emergent care.
Fantastic experience: Love doctors and nurses here they are wonderful
Positive experience: The ER got me in less than 10 minutes. Quickly saw doctor and test were ordered and completed . Ended up in the ICU, where the nursing was extremely organized in a team effort. From the IV people to the unit clerks all levels of nursing staff, to the hospitalist, Infection, ENT specialists and surgeon all were excellent. Unfortunately the only thing holding them back is the older equipment and truly outdated electronic patient record system. Mercy may finally be in a come back mode.
Negative experience: Went in for i.v and I seen air in my i.v. lineand it went into my blood stream. The nurse said it won,t hurt you. I upset, there should be no air in a i.v. line. Now I feel unsafe coming to this hospital.
Fantastic experience: Thank you for being there when we needed care.
Fantastic experience: My physician's office (not associated with this hospital) misled, deflected, and generally ignored my request for information on scheduling my MRI for a week. This morning I spoke with Rhonda in scheduling at Mercy and she immediately contacted the office, got the order, and scheduled the MRI. I am so appreciative of her help and willingness to go the extra mile to get this done for me.
Fantastic experience: After surgery I had just the best care possible. Friendly and professional, they made all the difference in the world.
Negative experience: Mercy family practices in Iowa city receptions person need more training to be a professional. She don’t have to yelling on the phone by we are talking than hang up on you.
Fantastic experience: I'm from Burlington, Iowa but was having surgery through the Steindler clinic. I had to make two trips to Mercy. The first for the routine blood work vitals and an ekg, the second for the actual surgery. Both interactions left me feeling like they really knew what they were doing. From registration, to blood draws to the ekg I was in and out in 25 minutes. Treated respectfully and professionally the entire time. The day of surgery was no different. Kind nurses and assistants, an anesthesiologists who was thorough with his explanations and took his time to answer questions. I don't want surgery again, but the staff here really did their work well.

Fantastic experience: This is our local family hospital. We have boys so we have been there, naturally, many times. The wait time in the ER was less than five minutes. We immediately saw a nurse, a doctor, or somebody (there are a ton of acronyms in medicine I’m not smart enough to know) that was able to diagnose and treat our kids (and a few times myself or my wife). If ever there was a “pleasant” ER experience this is it. Unlike other cities I’ve lived in I felt safe there, nobody was bleeding in waiting room or drunk and threatening. It feels assuring to know such a kind and warm staff was able to help us through our many issues. Probably many more to come, as well.

Negative experience: Husband was taken to ER by ambulance this morning for severe abdominal pain & nausea. He had been there an hour before I arrive & had only been seen by one person (he couldn't remember who). The next time anyone came in room was 1 hr later for EKG. Then, waited another hour & finally did blood work. Called for assistance with going to bathroom & ended up waiting 45 minutes. Had pushed call light 3 times for assistance & radiology tech was one who ended up assisting to bathroom. Retuned to room after testing & waited another 2 hours before anyone came into room ( PA with diagnosis). Nurse handed me the crackers & water to give my husband & walked out of room. Waited close to another 2 hours before nurse came back with discharge papers. This whole time we could see the nurses station & a lot of the staff was just sitting around in front of computers. Heard a lot of complaining about computer system being new & being down. Used this excuse a lot for the slowness in care.Total time husband was in ER was 8 hours!! I myself am a nurse & find this totally unacceptable treatment!

Fantastic experience: Only 10min ER wait time. The doctors and nurses are truly caring, attentive professionals. I trust them completely with my health, both physical and mental

Fantastic experience: In order to return to Canada I had to get a PCR test, unfortunately the first one I got would have expired before I got on my connecting flight in Chicago so I had to go back and get a second test. Being Canadian I am not used to a hospital charging for anything, but visitors to Canada have to pay for their test here before they can go home so it wasn't really all that bad at US120/test.

Negative experience: I went in and talked to a PA, I sat on a gurney in a hallway and was charged $5,000 for a "service level 4." I called the billing department and asked about what a "service level 4" is and got nothing in response. I tried for over 4 weeks, l left voicemails, hung out on the phone for hours and I was given no response nor answers. Cash grab operation if I have ever seen one. This is a predatory practice hospital.

Negative experience: 11/16/21 update: Spoke to billing again to try and resolve the issues. They were already working on sending me to collections. Even though I was making monthly payments. Asked them to just send me to collections. Pathetic hospital... never again. Went in for two services back in May. Was billed from 3 separate companies... Horrible experience with the billing department. I've been making so many payments. That even their system isn't sure what payments I have made thus far. Paid off balances, still show up in the system as being owed. Which in the long term will hurt my credit... Even though I already paid them twice over... possibly three times over by now. Just go to the U of I, they keep their billing on one system. Not 3 that can't even figure out what you owe...

Negative experience: After an hour in the ER waiting room they billed me nearly $2,000 for a 5 minute conversation with a doctor. That just about summarizes everything wrong with our healthcare system, doesn't it?

Negative experience: ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE BILLING DEPARTMENT. Received a phone call 8 months after son's birth that said I owed money for his birth. Since I had never received I asked for a printed bill with itemization so I could call my insurance since I have two insurances (which included Medicaid which means I shouldn't have a bill) and to update my current address since they had my old address (we had moved 2 months previous to the phone call). After 3 weeks I called to check the status of the bill and found out they hadn't updated my address and mailed to wrong one. Called a month later and found out they again hadn't updated my mailing address (but had updated my residential address.....). another 3 weeks and I finally received a bill, called Medicaid and they said they had covered everything and I shouldn't have a bill and put me on a 3 way call with the hospital. After almost 2 hours and the very nice insurance representative explaining they had paid the bill and I don't pay the leftovers. The billing supervisor agreed to put in review. And to call back a week later and get a hold of her specifically. A week and half later I called just to be told the supervisor was on vacation. Called back another week later to be told it was still in review and to call back the next week. Well, the next week I had a baby and after a couple weeks of recovery called just to be told I couldn't talk to the supervisor since she was no longer employed there, they couldn't get access to my records but could only tell it was still in review and they would call my back in a few day to give me an update. So now here I sit....2 hours on hold, 9 days after they said they would call me to see if I'm still in review.....oh and dealing with collection calls that they've told me they would retract for the last seven months.

Negative experience: We needed a pediatric lab this afternoon and apparently nobody could do it. I believe some staff training is needed. This was at the plaza and the lab during normal business hours.
Positive experience: One of the best hospitals that either myself or a family member has been in. The staff are always very compassionate and helpful.
Thank you for taking the time to provide a review. Mercy values your feedback!
Negative experience: Patient beware!! The billing department is horrible! Read your statements and check your account very carefully before paying them. I have been overcharged very large amounts multiple times. Two of these times I did pay the second bill, only to realize the mistake later and had to ask for my money back. They will not credit back the card you paid with and in the first incident it took almost 60 days before I received my check. Additionally, the person who said they would call me back and was nice enough (I thought) to even give me a direct connection, NEVER CALLED OR RETURNED MY CALLS. The second incident is pending, but upon confirming that they did indeed bill for same services twice and I did over pay, I have been informed it will take AT LEAST 30 days to receive a refund check (I paid by card). They are worse than the actual insurance companies!
Negative experience: Awful. I went because of extremely severe foot pain. They offered me a wheelchair to take me back to the er but didn't help me into it or out of it and onto the bed. Was there for four hours and the only time I saw somebody was when they came to ask me what was wrong. During that whole time I saw someone for maybe 15 minutes combined. The person next to me was is obvious extreme pain and they basically ignored her and didn't help her. Finally at the end they said I just had arthritis (which I am positive is the wrong diagnosis)and gave me crutches to use but told me nothing about how to care for my foot, what to do to help with the pain. They said they would bring me a wheelchair to take me to the exit and I had to wait forever for the wheelchair and they didn't help me into it despite the fact I was struggling and had a bunch of stuff to carry. They took me to the exit for my husband to pick me up and just left me, pretty far from the door. Just awful. Total waste of time and money.

Negative experience: if anyone has a head injury don’t go here they have no neurological doctors at all. also very very rude nurses who thought my mother was on drugs and only going in for pain medication this place is completely bs and needs to be shut down asap. and don’t even bother saying talk to you department of whatever because i know they won’t listen. don’t EVER go here

Negative experience: Had made an appointment a month ago and hadn’t heard anything since. I live about an hour and a half away, so I get there and they said my appointment was rescheduled. No one had alerted me that they rescheduled it and picked a day that wouldn’t work for me/several weeks away. I would recommend you call and confirm your appointment if you’re new patient.

Fantastic experience: My experience during my procedure was terrific. The nurses, doctor, and staff were wonderful, and everything went very smoothly. Everyone was very attentive and caring towards their patients.

Negative experience: I'm glad Mercy lost case in North liberty against university , University hospital is coming up in north liberty. lots of life's are saved . Mercy hospital should be banned through out the US. Mercy is Joke on the name of Medical services providers. Worst hospital ,I'm ever been to. During pandemic I decided for visit Mercy ER room to avoid rush at university hospital for my 7 yr old son broken arm. turned out after doing the basic x-ray , they referred to the university. its waste of time and money to visit Mercy . and after now 7 months of follow up with billing department, I'm still waiting for insurance claim forms from them. Mercy should vacate the space for some good medical facilities to come up.

Fantastic experience: Best hospital in Iowa, in my opinion.
Fantastic experience: So love the Wound Clinic at Mercy Iowa City, Iowa! Dr Sharp and many great nurses and doctors there. We thank you so much for healing a year long + wound on a heel!
Negative experience: Mercy's Billing Department is the worst. After a year of trying to sort out a payment for a procedure, they sent me to a collection agency. They charged me for services, withdrew the amount from my account and then denied me making the payment. It took months for me to prove payment even though I had a confirmation from them. Just when I thought it was over, I received a letter stating my personal information has now been compromised due to someone accessing an employee email account. Pull it together.
Negative experience: My review is 0!!! That is the worst place I have heard of. My husband took his mother there and at first things went ok, I mean just ok. Well they kept her for 3days and said she had a bad infection, sent her home with a powerful antibiotic. The drug was so strong and bad for the elderly it made things worse. Well she was in and out of the hospital numerous times with them guessing what the problem was. 2months of this. Finally better I think because of one of the quacks got the right antibiotic. So found out from a private doctor she needed surgery and that would fix things hopefully. Of coarse it had to be at Mercy hospital, well here we go again! They don't give the patient the phone so you have to call the nurse, then wait for them to call back. So mom is in there just after surgery and was still out of it the day before and you can't find out how she is. WORST HOSPITAL EVER!!!!!
Fantastic experience: BEST PLACE EVER! I will never go to the U of I unless needed.
Negative experience: I saw Dr. Green today. My second attempt to relieve my pain. Just so you know, if you're in between insurance companies, stay far away from this clinic as they are far from use!
Negative experience: Weren't willing to look deeper into my problem to find the cause of my medical issue. Then when you express frustration they discharge you with out the proper medication. Go To the University if you need quality med care.
Negative experience: Rude staff
Negative experience: Long wait times to speak to someone in billing department. Rude customer service representatives.
Negative experience: Last week I had gone to the ER due to a food allergy. I was dry heaving violently into a trash can when we arrived. Snot and tears rolling down my face and I could barely breathe. As soon as we get there the nurses who came out to wheel me in accused me of being on drugs basically. My friend had explained what I ate and what all had happened and they didn't buy it. They took me to registration where they demanded I give them my info while I'm trying not to throw up everywhere. Once back in the room I was told to calm down and that working myself up wasn't going to help. They proceeded to drug test me and treating me like a junkie. The doctor included. The only person who was kind to me was the guy who did my CT scan. They really should be ashamed of themselves for how they treated me. God forbid I actually had a drug problem because they probably would've let me die. Update: I ended up going to the University of Iowa hospital in August 2020 after repeated failed visits to Mercy. Ended up having gall stones. I stayed a week inpatient at the U and had my gall bladder removed. I also found out I had 3 other stomach/bowel issues, all of which, Mercy did not try and find out for me and help fix all because I smoked pot. Major failure on the hospitals part.

Negative experience: Patient care group was fine: billing, billing website, and customer service a train wreck.

Positive experience: I have always had superior care at Mercy. I much prefer them to UIHC
Negative experience: I came to Mercy for a Vbac in 2017. I had Dr. Smullen. I was scheduled for a vbac on the upcoming Tuesday but developed hard labor Sunday night. I was made to wait 8 hours before seeing an actual doctor once I made the 50 min drive to get there. Once seen she said to me, " you couldnt wait until Tuesday, we're busy today". She then tore my lining very roughly and said, "there, that will get the job done". My daughter was born healthy, a few hours later. They then took my baby and wouldnt not give me direct skin to skin contact although my arms were out and I was crying for her...I hope my last pregnancy goes better bc this was an injustice to myself in both body and spirit.
Fantastic experience: My husband went to the ER with severe abdominal pain. They had him in a bed within 6 or 7 minutes. They took great care of him. His nurse Sarah was wonderful. He stayed there for 2 days, until a bed opened at University Hospital. I cannot say enough. Efficient, professional, kind, caring, supportive. I was very pleased. Dr. Huss was awesome too! I recommend this hospital. They took great such good care of my husband. Thank you!!
Fantastic experience: Staff and doctors respectful and very friendly ! Could not have been more attentive. Very courteous to family and friends visiting. The day nurses were amazing !! Dr. Michael Hoffman, was incredible - if it wasn’t for him our son would not be alive !!!

Negative experience: I have been here since 6:50pm yesterday 11/2 and it is now 7am. Staff has checked on my son’s girlfriend twice in 12 hours. This is unacceptable. Her dinner tray sat in her room until 10pm. No one has refilled her water pitcher. For all they know she could be dead. If I had it my she would be out of here.

Negative experience: If I could rate this any lower I would. I was seen in the E.R. last year after a car accident (which was not my fault). They billed the incorrect insurance (not billing the car insurance) and then placed the bill in collections with a terrible collections agency. This was escalated further. It took multiple calls to some where not in the hospital where I was told they had sent the bill to the car insurance (which they hadn't), and for me to finally do their billing departments job and get the bill to insurance. I am now having to pay legal fees for a bill that was never sent by them. Would not recommend them to anyone.

Fantastic experience: I can say I've been in hospital more than I like to get stiches, surgeries, and work related injury's. Most of those due to my lifestyle. The doctor who I will just say his 1st name Tim, was an absolute true, humble, kind, and funny man. I felt like I was on a TV series ,when most people, like me dislike hospitals! I hope all people run into more doctors like Tim.#thankyou

Fantastic experience: I was born here on April 21st, 1991! A good hospital which provides excellent care.

Fantastic experience: The best & most caring and helpful hospital. The hospital you will want to choose. We've had 3 successful surgeries and wonderful doctors. Can't say enough good things about this wonderful hospital and all the nurses and staff.
Fantastic experience: I just had hip surgery last week, spent 2 days there. It was an excellent hospital experience
Negative experience: The ONLY reason this is a 2 star and not a negative number is because the care received at Mercy is fantastic. The doctors are amazing, and Mercy is in fact my go to for medical. So , NOT a review of doctors and care - but rather of their billing department and lack of ease in trying to pay and get a receipt to submit to insurance or HSA. I've tried calling 4 times today to just get this number which they call an ID number which is needed to sign up for their online pay. I tell who ever I am speaking with I want to pay online to get the receipt in order to submit to HSA. They try very hard to get me to pay over the phone - to the point of one of the women was so insistent I ended up hanging up on her. On the last call, I was passed to 4 different departments before I got to someone who could help. She's walking me through how to pay online - and I'm taken to a screen which just asks for payment information. She told me that they are working on their system, so for now, they try their best to match up the amount with the patients name - so, if you're feeling generous, you could go pay someone else's bill if you'd like. But back to the issue of the receipt - this does not provide ANY form of receipt. Just that I paid a certain dollar amount. So I ask what my other options are - she says that she could email me a receipt of I pay over the phone (again, not sure why they are so keen on the over the phone payments). I then ask how the itemized receipt would get to me - she then back tracks and says either through the mail or by fax. I then ask why she can't email - when she said she could before. She tells me because it's not secure. So my only other option is to go in person and pay. Only issue is I have a day job. They're a 24/7 operation that has a billing department that's there from 8-4 M-F. No Saturday options. I know this may seem petty - but I need a receipt. I have an HSA account to help pay medical bills. I have to provide proof that it was indeed medical. Sadly, just paying a hopsital doesn't shout that to the insurance company - therefore I need this little piece of paper that seems impossible to get. If the bill was 20-50 bucks, sure, what ever. But for a hefty 1000-1500 hospital bill if I am unable to provide proof it was indeed medically necessary, I will be required to pay out of pocket - which I'm not wanting to do. You'd think being in the medical industry and dealing with insurance and HSA and HRAs, they'd know this. But would rather make it quite difficult to obtain the needed information to submit claims
Negative experience: Extremely rude and dismissive staff

Fantastic experience: huge phobia of doctors. went to er with my 3rd bartholin cyst drainage gone wrong, infection was spreading. after a few hours and some tests i was admitted and put in a room. 2 days later i had the surgery to solve the problem once and for all. i truly appreciate every single nurse, doctor, and specialist i came in contact with. they were so personable and professional. ER wait was short (less than 10 minutes on a sunday afternoon) and was recommended to come here rather than the U of I for that reason. extremely happy with the care that i received!

Negative experience: Terrible rude nurses and doctors. Treated me poorly almost to the extent of mocking me for my Injury and implying I was just trying to score pain medication.

Fantastic experience: Some of the best care ever, two knees replaced here, my eife had surgery today, we been blest by the care and attention here.

Negative experience: Worst service ever i have ever encountered. I came in in extreme pain and left the same way but thats okay by the head of the er. I highly recommend another hospital if you are in pain. Because I was discharged in the same pain I was in when I came in.

Fantastic experience: Really?!!? At first I was so sick and tired of hurting and feeling sick in general, and so I fell so helpless and hopeless going from appointment to appointment with zero answers at the time Now knowing how well my family was and is being taken care of, I am more confident and interested in switching from the university of Iowa to mercy hospital from now on

Negative experience: Seriously the WORST service and waste of time. Had a nurse come in. She drew blood then left. Didn't tell me they would be giving me an IV. Another nurse came in to start my IV. I waited almost 2 hours for the doctor to come in. Told her what was going on. She basically heard NOTHING I said except one symptom. I sat there for over 4 hours (there was hardly anyone there, so they werent busy) then I'm sent home and diagnosed with something that ISNT EVEN WHAT I WENT FOR. The doctor said she was going to REFER me to a GI. When I was discharged they said for me to contact the specialist. So now I get to go home to continue to feel horrible. It was a complete waste of time. I probably would have had better luck at the University.
