Our comment from Nutrifinder.net about Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center:

Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center aims to provide exceptional healthcare to its patients, featuring modern facilities and a dedicated staff. Many visitors have praised the hospital for its cleanliness and state-of-the-art equipment, while others have reported great experiences with caring nurses and attentive doctors, particularly in the emergency department.

However, there are recurring concerns regarding long wait times in the ER and varying levels of care from the staff. Several patients have expressed dissatisfaction due to feeling ignored or receiving less than adequate attention during critical situations. For example, some have reported waits exceeding four hours without being seen, leading to frustration and disappointment.

Despite these challenges, many patients have highlighted instances of excellent care, particularly in surgical departments and during childbirth, underscoring the hospital's potential for quality healthcare service. Addressing issues like communication and staffing shortages in the emergency department remains a priority for improvement.

In summary, Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center is highly regarded for its facilities and some of its staff, but must focus on enhancing patient experience in the waiting areas and during emergency visits to live up to its promising reputation.

Negative experience: Been waiting 2 1/2 hours. Place is a joke

Negative experience: I went to the ED around 10:30pm for severe flu like symptoms, and a temp of 102.8 that was lasting for a few days even after taking tylenol and cold and flu meds ( i would have just went to urgent care but none were open and i desperately needed to be seen) i expressed my concern that when i get sick it usually turns into bronchitis due to asthma. I wasn't seen by the doctor until 4:45 am ( the front desk lady just kept saying it was because ambulances kept coming in and there was just one doctor) while i was waiting they did give me motrin to break the fever and it worked, as well as an ekg. When i finally seen the doctor i asked if i could be prescribed a steroid to help with my chest pain, he said he would, he didn't. No X-ray was taken, he prescribed me tamaflu even though i was not in the symptom window of it (usually 48 hours after symptoms start-i had them for about 72 hours at this point) They gave me some more tylenol because by the time i got to the back my fever was high again, and one dose of the tamaflu awhile. When I got home my chest pain had increased, and 3 hours after I left their ED I ended up going to urgent care because I knew it was more then the Flu, and long behold I was diagnosed with Pneumonia. The hospital seems very nice, but they definitely need more doctors in the ED at night so stuff like this doesn't happen again.

Positive experience: Care here is hit or miss. My partner has been in twice and some nurses are really attentive and helpful, and others take over an hour, consistently, to answer call bells, forget meds and get upset if you need help. Both times she had to wait over 5 hours in the ER, and one of those times she needed emergency surgery, was brought into the OR within the hour after finally getting in. As a guest, I have a gluten allergy and have been told by several staff at the cafeteria that nothing in their cafeteria is gluten free, even including things like mashed potatoes, rice, etc. most of the time they seem annoyed by the question, so not sure how true that is, but it’s really hard to be there all day and not eat. For a hospital, they need to do better.

Negative experience: Complete trash and dirty Hours yesterday, messed up results, My wife had to come again and then she died

David S. 9 months ago

Negative experience: Absolutely horrible first time experience with the ED department on Saturday, December 28, 2024. Took my wife there at 4:00pm and her vitals were taken promptly. The waiting area only had 4 other patients ahead of us. By 6:30 she still was not seen even though all of the other 4 patients were taken back during those 2-1/2 hours. New patients arrive and were being taken back ahead of my wife! The front desk staff were absolutely useless when questioned. By 7:00pm and still nothing my wife had enough and we got up and left. We understand there are wait times at ED's but this was ridiculous and the lack of communication was absurd. Why couldn't someone keep us abreast of an approximate wait time? And then when we ask we get shrugged off....very poor behavior. Then my wife received an email through the portal with "discharge paperwork"...what? She wasn't even seen. What is even worse on these papers the Chief Complaint is WRONG! Never again!

Fantastic experience: We gave birth here and the staff was flawless. Not over run so we always had staff to talk to. Amazing experience. I also was here for the ER when I cut my hand and they had me all stitched up and out in a few hours. I did not have the experience some commented on. Everything was flawless and professional.

Negative experience: I never do these reviews but this has to be one of the most unprofessional places I’ve been to. The lack of communication between the patient and the doctor is honestly horrendous. I can’t get in contact with my doctor EVER. They tell me to download MyChart and they never even answer. I am waiting to talk to my doctor about test results I received but I can’t even get in touch with him. I hate to bicker but this is so frustrating not knowing if I’m okay or if this is something that needs to be treated expeditiously. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE improve on the communication.

Positive experience: My fiance made a terrible decision by taking nail clippers and removed a keyloid from his finger .(he has a skin condition he got inherited from his dad). He said it was ugly and didn’t want it on anymore . So be irresponsible and irrational he cut it off with the clippers . And started bleeding and was a big deep wound on his finger . I immediately put tissue paper gauze wrapping and brown gauze taping . And we were on the way to the hospital . We got there and it took about almost an hour to get in . This wasn’t no one’s fault I understand hospitals get busy . Although we were there from 10 to 2 am . Just for a finger. He got stitches . And now he’s okay . He was treated good . The nurses and doctor asked why would you do something like that . Just like I did lol . They treated him great and it was very beautiful inside . They take care of it . The one bathroom in waiting room was dirty . Yet it’s open to public so what do you expect Thank you guys so much for taking great care of my man !

Negative experience: When it comes to care it’s poor I waited almost 2hrs no one but one other person in the waiting room, I was there 4 days ago with the same problem and instead of seeing how severely sick I was and in pain they made me wait while they called every new person to the back for a bed that walked in after me, if I come in for the same problem then as doctors and nurses you should wanna find out why I’m there all the time but instead they kept me in the waiting room screaming in pain and without help and stated they couldn’t get ahold of anyone to help me I was the only one left in the waiting room, I would not recommend and will definitely tell anyone and everyone you guys do not care about someone health especially if it’s that severe terrible job on your end I will not be back knowing that’s how you treat patients that come back for the same people because you don’t care enough to fix the problem that’s what’s wrong with today hospitals it’s only about the money!!

Positive experience: I’ve had some good experiences and some not so good experiences. The long and the short is, in the unfortunate event that a nurse named Jillian still works there on the 3rd floor Intermediate ICU, do yourself a favor and ask for a different nurse. She managed to make my father’s final hour worse than it already was. It was like pulling teeth to get her to give a crap about my dad and she was beyond annoyed when I finally asked her to page the doctor. I even texted the NP who’d called earlier that today to tell me to come in; that’s what you get for calling from your personal cell. But I texted to tell her how awful Jillian was being (Patrice was lovely btw). Indeed, my half-dead father remarked that Jillian was “rather surly.” Jillian is ill-suited to the profession; perhaps a women’s prison would be a better fit. Before you reply with a canned response, I already sent a letter to Barb Zuppa and had a worthless meeting with her and some of her staff, one of whom shared Jillian’s comments on my letter: “I could see how she took it that way.” Her comments should’ve been, “I’m terrible at my job and I’m sorry I made this awful day even worse.” There are some truly wonderful providers at LMC but Jillian is a huge stain on the hospital’s reputation. I truly hope she has left the profession.

Negative experience: They were horrible. We waited for over an hour. My mom was in critical condition. They wouldn't even give us a cup of water. I asked the ladies in the front for a cup and they said oh let's see if we have some we might not, and they did not care, I feel like a cup of water Is the bare minimum they can give to someone that can't even walk and screaming in the waiting room because of her pain they were not attentive. They were not responsive and the front desk people did not care. They gave us attitude and looked at us like we were crazy they we re dismissive and they laughed at us after we left will never go here again We went to LGH and they seen her immediately and made her a priority patient Being that her health was critical The front desk ladies should be fired They were unethical, unreasonable, Unprofessional and not sympathetic they were the worst people to greet

Positive experience: I’m not a priority……..but they made me one!!!! The wait was a bit long but they are really good at emptying out the emergency lobby pretty quickly! And 90 percent of the staff did an exceptional job once service started! Do be careful not to leave anything in the rooms though I left a 50$ charger plugged in my room and forgot it and when I returned for it they gave me a cheap 5$ charger that wasn’t even the right one for my phone:( and do speak up if u think u r waiting too long:)

Negative experience: UPDATE: upon contacting the hospital and having a patient advocate, the hospital decided that the wait time does not matter as long as you eventually receive care. To restate that… The hospital literally could give two flying farts that we were there all night… It wasn’t worth one dollar to them. Do not go here. They will take no responsibility for your experience. Pieces that I did not add on this initial review was that there was no movement in the ER for the six hours that I was there. They wound up taking all the patients in the last 30 minutes that I sat. This caused one young woman to have a full on mental breakdown and they needed to call security when her mother showed up to take her home. Do not waste your time your energy Or your money using this facility. And let me add I would not even be complaining about the wait time if there was any movement at all. Every single person just sat in the ER that night until they gave up. On hour 4 1/2 with a 9 year old in an almost empty ER. Most people have just given up and left. Will update if we are ever seen. Hour 5- 1am now. Shift change and it’s now obnoxiously loud. The new staff is carrying on and I’m sure the three of us in the ER do not appreciate this loud joking, screeching, and volume at 1am. At least we are headed back. I’m all for fun, but five hours in and that’s simply not appropriate

Fantastic experience: Honestly the best ER experience I’ve ever had. Negative experience: Worst care I have ever received. Went in with an emergency. Staff was so rude when they could visibly see I was in destress and scared. I explained my emergency and they just looked at me. Their tones were all so rude and unprofessional. Instead of helping me with a wheelchair or walking with me the staff walked far ahead of me and then made me change into a gown with no dignity. I had to strip down in a room of at least 5 people staring at me. It was a humiliating event and I will never go there in an emergency situation again.

Negative experience: I am disappointed. EMS was wonderful and everything went smoothly until they stuck me in a room for 3 and a half hours and I still had not seen a Dr. Earlier, When I first arrived I asked how long it would before being seen. They told me the DR was finishing up with a patient and would be in shortly. The first time I asked to use the restroom I was met with a very grumpy staff member. The second nurse I had was much kinder thank goodness. They did leave the bar down on the bed. I could have had a grand male seizure and end up with a head lac from falling on the hard floor.I would be in more trouble. More serious trouble Literally the entire reason I was there was because I was having a seizure. I am a diagnosed epileptic. I'm shocked that they would let someone with epilepsy just be alone that way. I could hear them carrying on in the backround. Clearly understaffed and not much of a concern for their patients. I gave two stars because it is very clean and well kept. It's really a shame. I ended up walking out because clearly there was no concern for the patient. Someone who is having auras could go into a grand mal. Leaving the bar down on the bed was a huge mistake. It just makes me sad because the outside of the hospital is beautiful and Penn State used to have a very good reputation. I won't go back. 3 and a half hour wait with an urgent illness and no dr. I realize I am state insured atm but I should have seen a Dr much sooner. No thank you. Would not recommend. There should have been more than one dr on staff. .

Negative experience: Penn state health is a worse ER I ever experience I ever had . I checked in at 05 pm and wait till 11 pm they don’t call me they take other patients who come 8-9-10 pm and keep on . My blood sugar level going down because of not eating dinner then I left and back home to take some good food. This is my first and last visit batter I travel Harrisburg or other city or go 24 hours urgent care or UPMC but not penn state health. They have not enough ER staff. Negative experience: Went in for a procedure staff were very nice checking me in. Went into surgery who knows what happened!? The male nurse who came to get me was upset at his coworkers and made comments towards one of them. Was he upset and just manhandled me? Surgery in throat yet wake up with bruises on both knees and no one can explain what happened (inner side). The doctor said ask the anesthesiologist.. is he for real?! I would never go back or recommend anyone to ever go to this hospital or to any doctor affiliated with pennstate which he is. . I have been in pain, can't walk without severe leg pain and face is still numb ,that is only the physical part, I've had no sleep wondering what did they do to me in there. Did I fall, did someone hurt me? What happened to me? No answer. Never had complications with anesthesia but did that day. I regret not taking pictures of my knees but I'm not that person to whip out a phone. I know better now. I did however message my doctors immediately about it.

Negative experience: This place is unbelievable. Been here 2 times the first was for my mother she was in excruciating pain and could not move. Waited over 6 hours still wasn’t seen ended up leaving. Pain got worse waiting for doctors. This 2nd time I came for my 7 months old son. Thought it would be different since he’s a baby. Got here around 9pm, it’s about to be 4am and yet again still waiting. He has a head injury and no one is taking it seriously. Do not come here.

Positive experience: Penn State ER! What can say... they far exceeded our expectations. Our first time leaving an ER feeling like they took us seriously. They not only addressed each and every concern they kept us completely informed about each and every test they ran and why. They would periodically come in and inform us about test results as they came in which didnt take hours. We were in and out of the ER in less then 4 hours something Penn Med ER would have taken 7-10 hours sometimes even longer. We left Penn State ER with an understanding that not all ER's, Doctors & Nurses are not built the same. Penn State ER the on State Road in Lancaster pa. The care we've always deserved.

Fantastic experience: I had three surgeries last year, 2 here and this year broke both bones in my left wrist and my right femur. Came in by ambulance. They were top notch from ER, ICU, surgery, and last in a regular room. The food is good, very knowledgeable and helpful up and down the staff and most important of all everyone was so kind and caring.

Negative experience: We went to the ER on Wednesday after being told to by our primary care physician. My 5 yr old son had a cough and was having breathing problems, and Tuesday we went to our primary care physician who said she heard fluid in his lungs and sent us for a chest X-ray. The chest X-ray showed the beginning of pneumonia so she prescribed antibiotics. On Wednesday morning his breathing was worse, so I called his doctor and she said to take him to the ER. We came to your ER and were completely dismissed by the physician assistant Nicole Bleacher McCardle. She said she did not hear any fluid in his lungs, just some wheezing at the end. She ordered another chest X-ray and a breathing treatment. The respiratory therapist listened to him and said he heard the infection in his lungs and gave him the breathing treatment and said it opened him up more. The physician assistant came back in to explain that they did not see any pneumonia on the chest X-ray, and that some warm honey could help his cough. She never even checked his oxygen level. Meanwhile, he was still breathing very heavy. The nurse came in to discharge us and seemed very unsure about that, he checked his oxygen level which was at 92, but gave us our discharge papers anyway. Obviously, none of this helped my son, so I called back to our doctor, who looked over the chest X-rays from Tuesday, and the one from your ER on Wednesday, and said they still saw the pneumonia. All this time, by son is struggling to breathe. Both doctors at the practice listened to his lungs and both agreed that they heard fluid in his lungs which confirmed what they saw on the chest X-ray. I am not sure why your physician assistant in the ER can’t listen to lungs properly, or didn’t want to help my son, but I will now think twice about coming to your ER in the future. My son has issues every time he gets sick, and we can manage it at home with his nebulizer until, but his breathing was very heavy and he was working very hard to breathe, so I know when it’s time to go to the ER and for the physician assistant to not even listen to me and just dismiss me, is very upsetting. You are now going to send me a bill, for your physician assistant to have done nothing for my son except suggest warm honey. I expect a higher level of care as I don’t just run my kids to the ER for every little thing, but something like struggling to breathe is a problem, and should not be taken lightly as your physician assistant did.

Negative experience: This is my 3rd time being here with one of my kids and still rate it as the worst hospital. Not making it a fourth time told my kids UMPC is where you need to go. This Pennstate hospital needs to get a system down because what they have is not working. Should not be sitting in a waiting room not full mind you for 4 + hours to be seen.

Negative experience: If you have an absolute emergency or are in any pain DO NOT GO HERE ! Last week I took my husband there for an emergency. There was only 2 other people in the waiting room. We sat there for over 4 hours. I asked the receptionist why we were being made to wait when there was absolutely nobody else there. She didn't look at me as I spoke but continued to tap on her keyboard. She had no answers. I told her he was in pain and increasingly getting more agitated. We waited approximately an hour longer and still did not see a nurse or Dr. My husband requested I take him to another hospital. I told the girl we were leaving. Once again she never looked up from her keyboard and her reply very sarcastically was, "thank you, I'll pass it on" Now let's jump to this even, as I'm typing this. My 10 year old grand daughter with a possible broken foot has been sitting in the waiting room, once again for hours and the waiting room is quite empty. My daughter asked for something for pain an hour ago and has yet to get any relief. No ice ? No pain medication ? For a child in pain. BULLSHIT. My daughter is leaving and will take her elsewhere. What a disgrace of an emergency room

Negative experience: I went 6/27/24. I went to ER. I was experiencing abdominal pain that strikes pain from my ovaries to my arm from a miscarriage. I get checked in triage the lady tells me “we’re not even busy, you should get seen fast and have a room” this is at 6:30pm around 8:30 I’m taken to do an ultrasound & placed back in the waiting room. I have to sit the entire time which causes more pain because I just need to lay down. I got fed up and waited to leave at 11:30pm. At this point I have seen people get up and leave the ER that were there prior to me & I know haven’t been taken back. The receptionist runs up to me as I’m leaving “I got you a room they just need to clean it” I explained to her what triage lady said, she states “ they do that all the time and lie about waiting times” so I’m back finally in a room where there is no one else around me besides 1 elderly person, all these beds open. All of sudden I’m getting care. I declined the CT but I needed something for pain and would like to be discharged well it is now 12:30 I get pain medicine. No one came back to discharge me so now it’s close to 2am I told the staff I was leaving. I’m half way down the hall the doctor chasing me down (he was good) saying if I stay for another 15 minutes they can get me discharged. At this point I said no and for the first time in my life I just walked out. Soooo would I go here again? No! I’m calling to get my medical Today now to get them transferred to my pcp. They DO NOT PICK UP! You get to the first person on the waiting list and it goes to voicemails. I’ve called on 2 phones at the same times for over an hour left messages and guess what? No one called me back. This is a joke of a hospital.

Negative experience: Went to the ER for terrible scrotal pain. Waited to be seen by an MD for almost 5 hours. My pain meds wore off and I asked the receptionist if I could get something to take the edge off. Within 5 minutes of her placing a call, a scrub approaches me with a container and asks if I’d been asked to provide a urine sample. I explained that I’d been here almost 5 hours and after I’d relieved myself, now I’m expected to provide a sample? Forget the sample, I’d like something for the pain. The scrub tells me that I can’t have anything before being “seen”, but tells me it’s going to be “awhile” and to start drinking water. Nope. I left the piss cup with the receptionist and left. Do not entrust your health to these people. They will not value your comfort or condition.

Negative experience: Came into the E.R. close to 9:38 P.M. They took me back for an xray for possible bronchitis and here I am still sitting in the E.R. waiting area 2: 26 A.M. While waiting in E.R. 4 more patients came after me and was called back and taken back to a room. When asked, the woman told me I was next. Then later proceeded to tell an ambulance was due to arrive and the bed they had was going to be taken for the patient in ambulance. A half hr went by and the bed that was not available for me because an "ambulance was on its way" they gave to a patient who came in after me!!!!! Again I approached them and asked if the ambulance arrived and why was the patient that just arrived after I've been waiting for approximately 4 hrs was taken back. ALL SHE COULD SAY WAS IM SORRY. THEY NEED A BETTER SYSTEM. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. IM DISAPPOINTED AND WILL NOT RETURN TO THIS LOCATION!!!! FINALLY IN A ROOM AT 3:37 A.M.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I went to PSHLMC from the very beginning of pregnancy to welcoming our baby girl into the world at this hospital last month. Enough great things cannot be said about our experience--these folks are true professionals. A special shout out to the night staff--particularly Nurse Annette (from Kentucky). THANK YOU! Also, Dr. Hunter and McDonald--y'all rock! Facilities? Brand new, clean and state of the art. My ONLY complaint was the gal working behind the counter in the cafeteria--she couldn't have been more bland, rude and grumpy if she tried--she was this way during all four interactions we had with her. Whoever she is, I think she needs a change of scenery. This said, we HIGHLY recommend PSHLMC for anyone looking for the absolute best baby delivery experience.

Negative experience: My mother went in for wounds and infection from a condition she had. She went in to the emergency room initially a second time this year. When they sent her to a regular room after the emergency room they lost her shirt. During her stay there they lost her glasses she had and were pretty much "Oh well." about it. ($460 replacement cost) Unlike up at Penn State in Hersey they contacted me about where to send her for rehab and therapy. I picked from a list of places in Lancaster since my mother insisted on staying here in Lancaster. They sent her over there without any information so the people at Hamilton Arms had no idea what they were dealing with. Hamilton Arms also stated to me via one of their staff that she arrived in a condition that they should not have released her from compounding her recovery process. While she was treated here at this hospital I feel like she was tossed out to be someone elses problem in the end. Also they neglected to send her information over to the place she was going for therapy and recovery with her which made their job more difficult.

Negative experience: I was 21 weeks pregnant and had been having diarrhea for 9 days. After I started bleeding consistently and severe abdominal pain, I went in to be seen, I knew something was wrong. First, after I checked in I immediately ran to the bathroom (again, diarrhea) and then proceeded to wait for a half hour for triage who then informed me they removed me from the system due to not knowing where I went while I was using the restroom. (Max the med tech was fabulous and reassuring though!) Waited about an hour to be put in a room, where they drew blood and had me take a urine sample. Dr. Christopher Kleinberg saw me, asked a few questions, took an ultrasound of my baby and then told me I was likely just bleeding from “being a little raw from the diarrhea.” He told me to pick up an over the counter Imodium, and that hopefully it will all go away. I suggest he ask more questions and try to figure out the root cause of symptoms for future patients. Because now a week and half later, my symptoms are worse and I finally get a different doctor to tell me I have c diff infection, eating away at my colon and if it’s not treated I could die and/or lose my baby. (Also the Imodium makes this infection worse, so bad job there.) Moral of the story is the doctors need to actually listen to the patients and figure out what’s WRONG with them at the root. Not just treat a symptom. Or else they might die!

Positive experience: I had back surgery on a Tuesday. Everything with the surgery went great. The surgical staff were the best. 5 Stars. Now to my stay I was placed on the 5th floor after surgery for care. I would have to wait up 45 minutes after ringing my bell for someone to come in. The charge nurse would just set on her back side and not answer the call button. The floor was not short staffed. There is no reason for this kind of care. If this was the new standard I hate to see what the future brings. I will be voicing my concerns to someone who will take action because this is totally unacceptable.

Fantastic experience: Visited the ED this week for care after my toddler was bitten by a dog. We came in with several still bleeding puncture wounds in his leg and were taken back to triage right away, we were then sent back to the waiting room and the lady at the desk gave us some gauze but we were taken back to a room almost immediately after finding a seat. The doctor came into the room within 5 minutes of us being there, did an exam for my son and explained his recommendations in great detail. The nurse came in and got him cleaned up, talking to him the entire time to help make him comfortable- also brought him a slushie! As soon as he was done there was someone there from radiology who took his x-ray right in our room! I was super impressed at how quickly and efficiently everyone was while we were there!

Fantastic experience: I didn't have the best experience in the beginning when I got to the ER and with the exception of one doctor I have to say that once I got out of the lobby and actually in a room it was completely different. The care I received more than made up for the problems in the beginning. Nurses and doctors (except for one) are excellent, top notch professionals who went above and beyond to make sure I was ok

Negative experience: Sat for 3 hours in the waiting room that was packed to capacity, everyone just sat and waited & waited.I finally left, never seen a Dr. They had the audacity to send a bill!! This emergency room makes Lancaster General hospital's emergency room look really good! Very disappointed, definitely will not be back!

Negative experience: Unfortunately this has been the worst hospital I have even been in please stay away. There is a consistent disrguard for human dignity..The largest issue waa the w.hole hosptial ataff Staff members looking at a patient in the waiting having a sezure and doing nothing until there was a upheavel in the area from the patients. They had a cold behavior which must be a reflection of the administration of the hospital. This is protocal then they walked away I am very disappointed in our healthcare system I do not use it much so I always blindly spoke highly when people talked bad about Penn State Hospital. I always thought this was Penn State so it had to be good i regret not believing the people .

Fantastic experience: I cannot say enough positive things about my stay at this hospital. I came in very ill and left feeling much better. Cardiologist Dr Fitzsimmons is AMAZING! He diagnosed my symptoms. He did a cardiac catheter and put in a stent with utter perfection. He saved my life. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs a cardiologist. I then spent a night. The nurses were amazing. Everyone from food staff to doctors were top notch perfection. I definitely recommended this hospital and staff to my friends and family.

Negative experience: Terrible experience here. I came in on the ambulance with severe back pain. I could barely walk or move. The hospital had me in a wheelchair for 4hrs in excruciating pain. My daughter told them I couldn’t be in seated position for long and they did nothing about it. The front desk lady just kept saying “ok”. I eventually just left to get help else where. When we told them I was leaving again the lady just said “ok”. Terrible place

Negative experience: I would give a five star for the Emergency room. But a one star for the inpatient review. Most of the nursing staff was great. But the hospitalist and caseworker was very disheartening. My 87 yo Alzheimer family member was admitted. He had been seen in ER three days in a row Finally the last time admitted. He had RSV, UTI and been pulling his foley out. First couple days were fine. The one nurse on his floor was outstanding. Then as he was discharged from medical services and urology, things changed drastically. They wanted him out. I was expected to just send him to any skilled care facility. I had called 20 places on my own, put him on waiting list at a few facilities. Visited numerous places. I had originally put him in a facility prior to his visit here, which he was there for 3 weeks and had 7 ER visits. So was not in a hurray to make another mistake in choosing for him. I felt I was being pushed in getting him out. I wanted to make sure I placed him in the appropriate place. The hospitalist was the worse, made me feel I should have picked any place the case manager suggested. I even told her I had appointments to view 2 facilities that Friday, I spoke with her on Wednesday. She wasn't very happy, felt I should just transfer him to wherever they suggested. I am sure if the people working at Penn State were choosing for their family member they would have been very selective also. I even noticed once I mentioned that some of the facilities would not take him with having one on one in the room, they abruptly stopped that. Then he pulled his foley out again. He was getting very agitated. I feel that his care was pretty much done and nothing was done from that point on, since they wanted him out. I was in the process of appealing his stay when I found a facility to take him. So the day he is transferred to the new facility I was informed that he was worse then when the facility RN assessed him and was in even worse condition from when he was originally admitted. So he is struggling at the facility he is at. Can hardly walk by himself, horrible cough, not getting out of bed and very fragile. He needs 2 people to help him in and out of bed and chair. He was not like this before his admission to Penn State. He seems like he has been heavily medicated at this time. I even asked the case manager at Penn State if they needed the bed and if that was why he was being pushed out. I am sure Medicare had something to do with it also. I even spoke to the urologist ,after having to request they contact me, whom we discussed possible surgery but he mentioned he was at risk with him being diabetic. Didn't even know he was diabetic. Doctor said he may be wrong because he didn't have his chart in front of him. So not sure what that meant. Just so sad, because he originally was at LGH for 26 days and that was a nightmare. But I felt good about Penn State because of the ER care. But since his stay there I have another opinion of Penn State. I had to ask if someone could contact me about his health problem and ask questions about his RSV and infection, I was wanting to know if he presently was positive any longer. Did find out his RSV is negative but no word on his UTI. It is really sad how the medical world and care has gone downhill. I really want to thank the few nurses that really looked out for his well being. But don't have anything nice to say about everything else that had occurred there.

Negative experience: I came to this hospital in the middle of the night with my child who was in respiratory distress. They called us back to triage within 10 minutes. The nurse was as cold as ice. Didn’t once share any vitals or info with me. Never said one word to the me as the mother of a young child. Was not comforting to my son at all. Then she quickly dismissed us to the waiting room (not a private room) where we continued to wait for 4 HOURS in the middle of the night. Awful for a child having breathing issues and panicked. We listened to the front desk girl telling security how she is just “taking Theraflu” for her symptoms as she hacked and coughed the entire time! This woman is checking vulnerable people into the hospital! I could not believe they did not take a child in respiratory distress more seriously/urgently. 2 years ago in Hershey they took us immediately. We eventually left without being seen, because the sun came up and I just called the pediatrician. Two other parties left without being seen as well. While at the ped, my phone rang THREE times with the billing dept. asking for information for financially billing us four hours after I left their building after being up all night without my child being seen. Unreal. I will not go here again. Don’t waste your time and please go somewhere where they are professional, courteous and will actually see you. My pediatrician’s office couldn’t believe how we were treated there when I shared the whole story. I was so happy to have a new hospital close to home but now I will drive a distance to be seen in a timely manner and treated better!!

Negative experience: Wife and I took our daughter here months ago with a fever of 105.1. We waited over an hour to be seen. We thought the longer wait might be a fluke, so my wife went today. She is pregnant, having heart arrhythmia, and fainting spells. She has been there for hours (4) in the waiting room. Is it understaffed? Or are you just incompetent? We will no longer use this facility. Nothing is apparently a true emergency for them.

Fantastic experience: New issue...Returned to ER for GI issiues and was treated so well again. Everyone is so friendly and caring. This is definitely our hospital of choice. Amy on floor 4 made me feel like family. The staff is amazing. Had a heart attack and showed up at 2am. Every person. I dealt with made me feel like a family member and they genuinely cared about my health and comfort. I spent a night in ICU after successful procedure. Was thankfully I chose to go there. Love this place and staff.

Negative experience: Somebody from this Hospital stole my Grandma, who was either on her death bed or already deceased’s, debit card information and stole all of her money out of her account 4 days after she died in this hospital. Watch your belongings and your loved ones belongings, or you will get robbed too. Disgusting that there are people working there that are so greedy, especially to a dying cancer patient.

Negative experience: I usually go there a lot The night shift is wonderful but I went to the hospital during the day. This is my third time. And morning shift is horrible. I was there yesterday and I had Covid and RSV took them Three hours to give me a treatment for my asthma, and then when I asked for a treatment for my asthma doctor Are you sure you really need one? And they didn’t Give me a call Bell And they have both bars up and I was hooked up to machines so I had my mom call for a nurse I had to go to the bathroom and I was in a lot of pain in my side. Came in and said I can go home I said, can I get a voucher my mom is sick. I don’t have a ride home. I don’t understand why can’t get a ride home. You have to try. I left my card at home. I had no money. Then my nurse comes in and said, did you get a ride? I said yes my mom called upstairs and they’re giving me a voucher nurse goes with a big attitude says, why is your mom calling? I said she’s my ride she said whatever and walked out. And they’re finally in there giving me a treatment. The head nurse comes in. It says you can’t do no voucher. They said they do one she goes. Yeah you can’t keep coming here. Expecting us to give you a voucher remind you I never did a voucher with them she yelled at me in front of the other nurse And I’m frustrated I’m sick and I just didn’t wanna be there anymore. They are so rude. Never again when I do morning shift. I usually go to the night shift. They are so much nicer and never had a problem with anybody at night.

Negative experience: I had surgery at this place on January 22nd and it was a terrible experience!! I can only give one star, the staff is out of their positions all the time, the pressure machines are sounding like crazy and they take a long time to get adjusted. The reception is empty, and it’s unclear where the floor nurses go. And what shocked me the most was when I was taken to the operating room, without my consent, there were nursing students—more than 9 people—without masks. Not counting those who are required: 1 surgeon, 1 assistant, 1 anesthesiologist, and 2 or 3 nurses. The waiting room screen for your companion never showed my process from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM when I was assigned a room. Not recommended at all!!

Fantastic experience: I once came to this hospital with my son in an emergent situation. He had been let out from a hospital and needed medication so we were prompted to take him to the ER to get a script before the medication was able to be filled after the weekend upon arrival to this hospital, they were very courteous to us even made us just sit on the side and send it. You probably won’t need to be checked in. We’ll just have the doctor come and see you and the doctor we waited a little while maybe about 2025 minutes and the doctor was very nice. Came out into the hallway and talked with us and wrote a prescription for us. I myself have been to this hospital on two occasions, and everybody was very nice kind .

Negative experience: Let me start off with I wish I could give 0 stars as well. This is the absolute worst place to be seen! Please see LGH or any other medical practice if you have any major medical issues going on and anything potentially life threatening please do not go here!! They are extremely uneducated, do not care about patients, ignore symptoms and think they have it figured out before seeing you and no matter what you tell them, it will be in one ear and out the other. The records line is extremely unresponsive so if you want to switch they make it almost impossible so please start your journey to getting medical help at LGH or any other facility other than this one. I am currently stuck in the loop of switching and dealing with them and sending over my medical records to my new providers. At one point they stuck an IV in me, said I’d be getting fluids due to dehydration and then never returned with fluids, took the IV out and charged me $2000 for it!! This place i has the most inexperienced and unprofessional of all lancaster. The ones who came here just couldn’t make it anywhere else. So Please take your health serious and do NOT go here!!

Negative experience: Very poor service, nurses at the central desk in the ER were passive aggressive/rude (Kara) “refused to give me her name”. Dr. Alex U. Siegel treated my grandfather very poorly. Did not give discharge instruction and had his patient band cut and thrown back into the lobby still hooked up to a IV. He also refused to give me his name. My fiancé waited in the emergency room for 5 hours while ketonic. “Which is unacceptable”. When this was brought to the nurses attention (Kara) was unpleasant. Everything was very calm and cordial for the most part just extremely unpleasant staff. If you can avoid this place I would! Good luck!
