Our comment from Nutrifinder.net about University of Mississippi Medical Center:
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is known for its commitment to advancing medicine and saving lives, often providing excellent care in acute settings. Many patients express profound gratitude towards the medical and nursing staff who have provided compassionate care to their loved ones, highlighting individuals who have gone above and beyond in difficult times. The surgery units and trauma care are equipped with skilled professionals, making UMMC a recommended choice for complex health issues, especially in psychiatry and transplant cases.
However, UMMC also faces criticism regarding its cleanliness and long wait times, especially in the emergency department. Many visitors have reported distressing experiences related to unprofessional staff conduct and inadequate patient management. There are accounts of poor communication among staff and a perceived lack of urgency in care delivery, leading to discontent among patients and families.
Despite these challenges, the dedication of some staff shines through, with numerous reviews praising individual caregivers. The hospital continues to strive for improvement and higher standards of service, hoping to create a better experience for future patients.
- Strengths: Excellent specialized care, particularly in trauma and psychiatry; compassionate staff who often go above and beyond.
- Areas for Improvement: Cleanliness, patient management, and reducing wait times in the emergency department.
University of Mississippi Medical Center: Reviews
Fantastic experience: UMMC is a wonderful hospital that is day by day learning new medicine and saving lives.
Negative experience: The waiting room for surgical icu and the actual icu rooms are absolutely disgusting. Hospitals are supposed to be clean and sterile, especially ICU!
Negative experience: Worst hospital to ever go to in the state!! They have no bed side manner .. they give 0 care in the world about you or your loved ones.. I don’t know who is running this place but you REALLY need to get it together.. my grandma worked here for 33 years this place was not like this back then!!
Negative experience: My sister had major surgery there and they discharged her to the lobby before her ride could pick her up. No discharge instructions or bandages was given to her. The worst care ever. The surgery was from 7-11 and she was discharged the next day. The worst care ever.
Negative experience: This hospital has the baddest reviews ever... they can't even keep rooms open for patiences coming from the VA, that have to go over there.... My stepdad has a pacemaker and the VA has to send him to Ummc every time to get it checked out.... And they'll have him sitting in the Emergency room for hours n hours cause they claim to not have rooms open.. it's crazy..! VA, please get yall own equipment for checking pacemakers so people that have them don't have to be seen to Ummc to wait there... my mom hates the hospital with a passion.... this huge big hospital n they cant keep rooms open, or they move slow, it's ridiculous..... Ummc, do better..... .
Negative experience: Came to the this hospital at 2:00am In the morning got my husband blood pressure checked and ect. So they told us to wait in the waiting room tell they call us back to a room. Ok. So we enter the waiting room and it’s nasty and a mess. Food , chip bags, empty drink bottles, nasty blood paper and blood on chairs, bathroom nasty every thing just nasty and disgusting. And when one of the housekeeper came and half clean and swapped stuff up. Very unprofessional!! So It’s 9:00 and still haven’t seen a doctor. So I ask the lady in the front can I get a doctor excuse for work since I brought my husband and she said no with a nasty attitude cause he haven’t got seen. Which like I said we been there since 2:00 this morning. So we left. Y’all need to talk to your employees on cleaning and the lady at the front desk needs to talk to patients better without a nasty attitude. Cause next time it happens I’ll be contacting corporate.
Negative experience: My experience with this hospital has been extremely disappointing, particularly in terms of care and time management. There appears to be a significant lack of communication among the team, leading to confusion and inconsistent information. I was surprised by the absence of doctors making regular rounds, and the reliance on secondhand information is highly unprofessional. Additionally, the overall cleanliness of the facility leaves much to be desired. As family members, we invest a great deal of time and resources when our loved ones require care, and it is reasonable to expect them to be treated with dignity and professionalism. I sincerely hope that management and staff take this feedback seriously and strive to make meaningful improvements. Every patient and their family deserves a higher standard of care and service.
Fantastic experience: Thank you to the staff of Medical ICU on the second floor for great care with my mom. John, Christian, and the others were amazing!!!
Negative experience: Service when received is awesome 5 stars for that. But the wait time is horrendous !!! We ( myself and strangers) has been patiently waiting since 12 pm . This humongous hospital / school can only handle what seems like 2 patients every 3 hours.they have a regular waiting room and a fast track ( which should be renamed “ slow to no pace “ in two + hours they called two people and then it CLOSED!!! what’s the point of having . And even now I have no idea how long and it’s almost 8hrs later.when I think of emergency… I think of 911 fast paced almost immediately help while the patient is still alive (lol) .im not even blaming the staff just the big shots who’s calling all the shots .. put your self in our painful position. Your parents - kids . We’ve already struggled to get here.now we have to struggle to patiently in pain stay here
Negative experience: Nothing but butchers working here. Remember when they mess up, you have 1 year to sue. State hospitals only allow you to seek justice within 1 year of fault being found.
Negative experience: They killed my mother. She was sent here from another hospital because she was bleeding internally they did nothing and she bled to death and died at home. This is the worst hospital on the planet . Disgusting and everyone has a horrible attitude. They will be getting what is coming to them.
Negative experience: I went to the School of dentistry department to get an exam and the guy who was doing the exam put his fist in my mouth to check my bite of course he had on gloves but never in my life has a dentist or an assistant checked my bite this way.Im curious to know was he a racist and should I report him!
Negative experience: This has to be the worst hospital in the world. Staff unfriendly, I didnt ask to come here I was sent herby ambulance for an emergency surgery. Couldn't have been to much of an emergency to them considering I've been in a hallway for 13hours waiting to see a doctor. Nothing to eat no meds no nothing, everyone just walking past you, won't smile, won't speak. One nurse did ask me my pain level but that's all she did.. nothing more nothing less
Fantastic experience: The one that found out what was wrong with my si
Negative experience: this place is very disrespectful they try hiding everything from you last min they poked my mother baby 4-5 times my mother said she doesn’t want medical attention here anymore she want her in her baby to leave they denied that in said the baby is a patient but my mother baby doesn’t have a ssn for them either anything else that could b saying the baby belongs to the state they said my mother baby was VERY HEALTHY sugar in everything was 10/10 but the worker here they mad rude disrespectful non communicated loud talking around 4 am in the MORNING had to call for my nurse 5 times the lady was upset at my momma for calling iguess but I would never go here we had to call the police in all because the services was every awful
Fantastic experience: Only place in Mississippi worth going to for complicated health problems in regards to psychiatry.
Fantastic experience: I am A Liver Transplant Survivor, UMMC Transplant, Saved My Life! Date of my Transplant! OCTOBER 25, 2017, I am now in Pefert Health, and Become A Man Of Our Lord Jesus Crist . I am now A Extraordinary Minister, and A Future Catholic Preast!
Negative experience: why tf is the er waiting room so damn slow me and my husband have been waiting since 8pm to 4:52am i dont understand and still have not seen anybody yet
Negative experience: Terrible you will have to wait 5 hours in the waiting area because your child is not as sick as the 50 kids that comes in well after them that’s not right why it cont be in a timely manner. Came here at 6pm still in the waiting room 9:04pm
Negative experience: What is wrong with the employees that work in the payroll office and human resource always lying for they employees my kid’s father work there but they keep telling child support he doesn’t work there his name Corey McDonald and he owes 26000.00 dollars in back child support
Fantastic experience: I’m grateful for Sonya my mother’s infusion nurse here at UMMC, Shelby, Heather and Dr.Milner. They are wonderful and caring members of a wonderful hospital that exhibits professional and excellent care to my mom every time. Thanks ladies for all you do and have done. We really appreciate you all.
Negative experience: My daughter was born Labor Day weekend almost two years ago. My PP experience at UMMC still haunts me. I can only hope they have improved their processes for new mothers since my experience. I want to make it clear my doctor, Charlene collier was behind amazing. It’s the staff that caused so many issues and trauma. They had to take my daughter to the nicu 1 hour after her birth because they were not staffed with a transition nurse. Yet they claim to be a mom friendly hospital. I was promised she would be brought to my room shortly after arriving at the post partum floor. However this was far from the case. I arrived at the PP floor around 4 pm. My daughter wasn’t there. I couldn’t get a nurse on the phone from my hospital bed. Thank god I didn’t have an epidural, so I walked to the nurses station. I asked her where is my baby? She said mam, she is in the nicu. We are in the middle of shift change and cannot bring her to you. I said, that is my baby. Please bring her to me. She said “your baby is a patient her, and we are in the middle of shift change, you will have to wait” meanwhile a nurse spoke up and said “you can go visit your baby” in hindsight something the charge nurse should’ve said to me first. Felicia the nurse took me on the elevator downstairs to see my baby. She thank goodness for her humanity and basic nursing skills. I saw my baby 2-3 hours after giving her to the nicu. From my experience this is not a mom/baby friendly hospital. 2 years later my experience here still haunts me. Often I wonder if my daughter is extra high maintainer and wants to still nurse because of being taken away from her mother at such a crucial time of bonding. Besides this experience zero was explained to me about how to care for myself PP. (first time mom) there was zero help, I begged for food at least 5 times before a sweet MA at the nurses station offered to get me some fried chicken when she went to get her dinner. I started asking for food right after my daughter was born @ 3:33 (hadn’t been able to hold food or water down for almost 24 hours before) it was 8 pm by the time I ate. Because I could walk to the nurses station and pleaded for food. They would not bring me water without walking to the nurses station either. My L&D nurse Karen heard about what happened and came up to see me the next day. She asked me to complain so that perhaps it wouldn’t happen to another patient. She was appalled. I should have filed a complaint but was so absorbed with being a first time and single mom it was wasn’t a priority. Bottom line, for high risk and complications ummc is the best, they have the best doctors in the state. But make sure to have a good team of friends and family who will advocate for you and help to bring you the basics like food and water. This a grossly underserved demographic and understaffed hospital with mostly lazy employees. Prepare to advocate for yourself, or have people around you who can. There are so many details of neglect that I left out of my review.
Positive experience: I'm not irate as the forced placement. I am struggling. Wishes of no epilepsy and no gland/organ problems are consistently on my mind. Except for 2 types of prescription overdoses, I will continue to strive.
Fantastic experience: Took excellent care of us both in the children's ER and the children's hospital. The staff checked on us regularly and kept us informed as they learned more about what was going on.
Negative experience: Charged me $4500 for 5 hours in the ER, with them ignoring what I was brought in for and treating me only for a rash. The next morning I went home to find the paramedic from the Rez Fire and Rescue at my neighbor’s house. She is a nurse at UMMC. They discussing my medical condition outside her house. She wasn’t even one of my nurses, so why did she need to know anything about my medical conditions?
Fantastic experience: I had to come here for a study in the neurology department and everyone there were friendly everyone I came in contact with at least they made my stay very comfortable if I ever need another study done I prefer to come here thanks to everyone who helped me and the team that took care of me appreciate you all
Negative experience: Their parking Garage A flow was created by a 1st grader. It is utterly ridiculous that it takes over 30 mins to get out of the garage!! My word!! It makes zero sense how it works- please review that process before the stress creates more road rage!
Negative experience: On May 7 my daughter was admitted to the hospital @2am, from 2am til 4:30. The staff is horrible and the Psy resident spoke down on me calling me homeless etc when I have a house. He doesn't even know me yet along know anything about my livelihood. I wouldn't bring a RAT to UMMC and thats a rodent.
Negative experience: I WAS a patient at all the dermatology AND ,family clinic,ALL OF THEM ARE THE WORST MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. AND THEY CALL THIS A RESEARCH HOSPITAL. TOTAL LIE THEY DON’T CARE Even went ER. THAT WAS AN EXTREME WASTE OF DIGNITY AND BENEFITS AND OUT OF POCKET COSTS. Got LAB DONE DONT EVEN KNOW THE RESULTS SHE CALLED I MISSED HER CALL I CALLED BACK YEAH OK RUDE RECEPTIONIST STILL NO RESULTS GIVEN TO ME HOPE ALL WAS WELL CAUSE IDK. THIS HAS TO BE THE WORST TREATMENT IVE EVER EXPERIENCED. MY DR A TOTAL JOKE. BY THE NAME DR. WEBB. Has not a care for you in the world I’ve been left with a bad skin condition and something in my HAIR AND FOLLICLES for the last 6 months and from her notes I’ve been shunned all the way around the clinics and ER. FOR HER TO TELL ME NOTHINGS ON ME TO MAKE EVERYONE ONE ELSE TREAT ME AS SUICIDAL AND DELUSIONAL TOTAL LIE IVE LOST MY JOB DUE TO THIS ISSUE DOES SHE CARE HELL NO. CARES ENOUGH TO WANT TO CONVINCE YOU ITS IN YOUR MIND TO EVEN HAVE THE AUDACITY TO TRY AND MAKE ME TAKE PSYCHOLOGICAL MEDS. WHEN I FINALLY GET THE HELP I NEED ILL BE BACK DR. WEBB. STAY CLEAR IF ITS MORE THEN A PIMPLE I WOULDN'T ADVICE ANYONE THAT CARES ABOUT THEM SELF TO SEE HER DR. WEBB. SHE WILL LABEL YOUR NOTES TO MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE A TOTAL FOOL. WHEN YOUR TRULY IN NEED OF HELP. YOU WOULD THINK UMMC A LARGE HOSPITAL LOTS OF EQUIPMENT NONE USED. IF YOU DON’T ARRIVE LOOKING LIKE A MANGED DOG FOR HER LIGHT TO JUST SHINE. THERES NOTHING ON YOU. NO MATTER WHAT POPS OUT THE SKIN WHATS ON THE SKIN SHE WONT EVEN TOUCH You TO EXAMINE YOU. TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND BENEFITS. FIND A BETTER DOCTOR AND A DIFFERENT HOSPITAL. NOONE CARES ABOUT YOU HERE. Filed a grievance and they make you feel the same as the HORRIBLE DOCTORS THERES no COMPASSION OR SYMPATHY ANY WHERE IN THE CLINIC DERMATOLOGY FLOWOOD FAMILY CLINIC AND DAMN SURE NOT THE ER. HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WILL HERE MY CRY AND ILL BE ABLE TO BE TREATED ONE DAY AND YEP DOUBLE BACK ON UMMC THIS TREATMENT IS INHUMANE AND IT WILL NEVER STOP IF WE JUST KEEP BEING CHARGED AND SHUNNED. MAY THEY ALL HAVE THERE DAY TO BE TREATED JUST AS THEY HAVE TREATED US. AMEN
Negative experience: This hospital doesn’t give a damn about people. They look at sickle cell patients like they are drug seekers. If you are still in pain they send you home anyway. I truly hate this hospital.
Negative experience: Got a call from here and half a voicemail with no details. When I called back they were VERY unhelpful on why I was called. How are you going to give me an attitude when I am the victim of this situation? Had to go through my whole family and friends list to make sure everyone was okay. Now I’m just having to assume it was a wrong number call. Unprofessional and stressful.
Negative experience: I went to the ER 2 weeks ago for a vein popping out my forehead from my eyebrow to hair line and I have seizures, I waited 5 hours and not one person was called back. My brother is there now spitting up blood and looks like some of his lungs and others told him they been waiting 8 hours already. You would think they would go by the worst and get them in to see a doctor. But no, they rather patients take a chance on dieing waiting in their ER before they get seen. I wish I would have went to St. D'Souza first and all my records be other there and I wished my brother would have done the same, but he had is throat cancer treatment there and feeding tube and all that and now he has to wait till they decide they will see anybody. It's ashamed how ummc is now. It used to be the best hospital in Jackson to go to. Smh, not any more.
Negative experience: This emergency room is not safe from the second you walk in the door and are herded like cattle into a like closer than 6 feet apart, everyone then goes to a row of 6 chairs side by side. To a waiting room full of sick people to wait hours to get an image done. Very sad our leading hospital in Mississippi ( supposedly) is being this careless about speed of illness in 2024.
Negative experience: If i could give it zero stars I would, these disgusting humans test on monkeys by surgically placing tubes in them and forcing alcohol into their stomachs and this isn't the first time they've been involved in monkey abuse. In 2007 they tightened a shock collar around a monkeys neck so hard that its eyes started bleeding. Truly vile and cruel humans, I hope whoever is involved will feel the fullest extent of pain in the pits of hell
Negative experience: Very disappointed in the service
Fantastic experience: Great service and friendly staff
Negative experience: This has been the worst hospital experience I've ever had. Major HIPPA violations through their ER dungeon, as the staff called it and I spent over 24 hours on a gurney. In the room they thought my IV percolator was really funny. Lousy patient care an
Negative experience: 0 stars. Y’all need to hire help or something. There were hospital beds with people in them in the hallway. And the woman in the front has the worst attitude she needs a new job but that’s all for now.
Fantastic experience: The staff is the most wonderful people in the world.
Negative experience: The wait times as well as the triaging is beyond ridiculous. The staff has no sense of urgency or actual emergency. You will feel you will die before actually getting some real help.
Fantastic experience: I had 6 of my 7 surgeries at this facility in a 28 month period. UMMC is the only level one trauma hospital in MS. I prefer this hospital for this reason and because it’s a research hospital which means your level of care will be optimal. I am a Veteran and the local VA will refer certain patients to UMMC if appointment to see provider at VA is too far out. Overall, the experience has been an 8 on scale of 1-10. You will always have issues no matter where you go but at least you can voice your complaint and they will follow up etc. I’ve had Dr. Jared Davis as my plastic surgeon, Dr. Geisler as orthopedic surgeon and Dr. Berry as my oncology surgeon and my level of treatment has been excellent. They are the best at what they do!!! I am also a patient at the Dental School and love it especially the cheaper prices. But mostly I like that the students are being graded and there are several dentist that make sure they are performing procedures correctly. This also allows students to learn and perfect their skills. I highly recommend this hospital for all of your healthcare needs.
Negative experience: UMMC is literally the worst hospital in the state, and the worst in a 5 state region. If you want yourself or your loved one to be a human cutting experiment this is where you go !!!! All the money they can get from students. Below even 1 star
Negative experience: Nurse neglect patients and the charge nurse needs her license revoked ask for hospital admin she acts if she doesn't do weekends!
Negative experience: My brother was airlifted there due to a car accident that left his neck broken, and him paralyzed from the waist down, The surgical ICU was a pretty good staff. But when he got to the second floor that's when the trouble began, they would laugh at him, make fun of him, yell at him, and belittle him. They also did not feed him in a timely manner. They would put his food across the room on a table knowing full well that he could not get up and reach his food They also knew that he was incapable of feeding himself yet they let his food sit there get cold and hard before they decided to feed him, this happened more than once. When turning him they were a little rough with him also. I have never in my life seen this kind of treatment at a hospital before or one that had such low concern for their patients. I would not recommend a dog to that hospital My wish is that hospital would completely close down. And to top it all off when you would call and ask about him, They had him listed under an unknown name, And although all of his paperwork has been filled out his identity has been established they are still going under his unknown name which is completely stupid. Honestly I could write a book on the poor treatment he received..
Negative experience: I wish the hospital would let children in to see their parent. I know so many hospitals that allow kids to go with their parents if one parent is with the patient. I hope one day they will be like the other hospitals and allow kids to be able to see their parent or parents. My husband didn't get to see his kids for almost 2 weeks. I understand it maybe a safety issue or something but it is hard being away from your kids long period of times.
Negative experience: I came in today@ 1:00 pm and brought my daughter for a scan on her chest because she has an VP Shunt, she was having chest pain keep in mind I had rode 2 1/2 hours to get there all we got was a ekg and a trip to the waiting room what a waste of time and gas for 4hours we was told to hang tight a spot was coming open for her that’s what we thought it was given to another person no the person wasn’t worst off than her so we end up leaving at 4:30 without seeing the doctor. They didn’t know how to talk to the patients at all I just looked at them they forget the patients makes their payroll, the patients didn’t ask to get sick if you don’t like your job go into another field show a little love, that don’t hurt nobody
Negative experience: I used to think the UMMC hospital was a great hospital, but not anymore. My old neighbor was admitted and his experience was truly horrible. Not only did the doctors not order any significant tests during his 2 week stay, but the nurses there scared and harassed him. They told him that he had to leave the hospital and that no one wanted him, so they were going to dump him at a homeless shelter. He called my sister crying. He couldn't walk or take care of himself and his legs were literally black, but all the hospital wanted was for him to get out of the hospital. When he went home his doctor sent him to a specialist who actually did some proper tests, and called my sister (now his medical power of attorney) this morning when she got his blood tests back and said she wanted him back in the hospital immediately. That he can't live alone. All of which we told the doctors at UMMC. Of course he will not be sent back to UMMC. Finally he's getting some proper care. I can't believe any one of the problems experienced at UMMC actually ever occurred, much less all of them. What a dump. It's sad that such a prestigious hospital has become so awful. UPDATE: my neighbor finally went to a hospital that took him seriously. Come to find out that he needs open heart surgery. If the "medical professionals" at UMMC were doing their job they would have done more than an EKG when my sister told them to check his heart. He had obvious, visible and serious signs of heart failure. It's astonishing to me that a hospital could miss this on an inpatient and SEND HIM HOME!
Negative experience: My brother was listed as homeless and had no family he lived in his apt for almost 10 years my brother filed appeal to stay in hospital after 48 hours appeal was denied I was told the next day at 12.01 he had to be out or else he would be charged 2000 a day I found a loving and caring facility in Gulfport mississippi he didn't last 24 hours
Negative experience: Today is the second time ,that my husband was sent to this place and never got seen by a doctor, the first time we sat in the waiting room for 11 hours and all he got was 3 blood pressure checksand this we sat there for 6 hours and never seen a doctor and only got 1 blood pressure check, I wouldn't refer anyone to go to this hospital.
Negative experience: We got treated terrible Sunday night my niece was trying to commit suicidal and it was me and her mom and two uncle came. And they would not let my husband and brother in law in they told them they had to go sit outside or in the vehicle and it 105 outside. And I have seen a bunch of people with one patient before. And when we got there they took everything out of purse and then stood for 5 minutes before the nurses asked of questions. And made us sit in the waiting room when they should had taken her to the trauma room.the floors was so nasty food drinks people sleeping in the chairs.I think if we was the other color we would be treated a lot better. I not raciest.but felt like we was treated very unfairly.Ian not black
Negative experience: Terrible place! Go to a different hospital.
Negative experience: There shouldn't be a 14 hour wait time that is just insane. I will never go back.
Negative experience: This place sucks… what’s the difference between a 16 year old and 18 to sit in a lobby! Ridiculous. I hope this dumb place goes out of buisness and the patients get the care they need at a better er
Fantastic experience: -1000 there so rude need better staff they steadily say there gonna cuss people out bc there calling the phone and there just so rude but the coffeys good
Negative experience: Not the place to result to for medical care, you will literally spend a night or two in the waiting room no matter how bad you feel
Negative experience: This place is horrible the worst experience in my life. My fiancé came in for a regular doctors appointment. They admitted her in the hospital for evaluation told her something else was going on with her kidney. She ended up in surgery then I got phone calls from the doctors, apologizing and saying if they really messed up now she has to get her kidney take him out and he put on the transplant list and hast to do dialysis. Because they messed up now she has to be housed in the hospital and I have no idea for how long we do not even live in Mississippi anymore. Ill simple is turning deadly. I have no idea what to do in this situation, but please take your family and loved ones somewhere else other than this place
Negative experience: If I could vote 0 stars I would. I'm at the point where I'd like to start a petition to expand Emergency Room care. There is no reason people should wait 9 hours to be seen. More room needs to be created and/or more emergency room staff. And if there's a hiring issue, increase the salary.
Negative experience: This is the most UNORGANIZED school of anything. I'm in my 5th month of coming. I've seen 3 residents. Today my treatment plan went from $2800+ to $9600+. (Actually it's my 3rd treatment plan and estimate as I have had 3 residents.). I WILL NOT BE BACK! Staff is rude if you question them.
Negative experience: Emergency room is a joke they do not ask enough questions at all. Terrible communication wirh person and/or next department they try to send you. If you can get in past the emergency room and see a doctor the medical work is great.
Negative experience: There is a security guard by the name of Bridgette Williams on the night shift at the door of the Wiser entrance. She treated my family members like trash. She was EXTREMELY unprofessional and used profanity as if she was trained to do so. She made my family feel very unwelcome for no reason. None of the other staff agreed with her actions
Negative experience: My husband waited in the emergency room for eight hours and left. He returned the next day and waited over eight hours again in the emergency room while having chest pain and shortness of breath. He eventually was taken back and his blood pressure was 184/114. He has no history of blood pressure. The staff was extremely rude and unconcerned with medical care. It's ridiculous on how long the wait time is. Someone needs to be concerned about patient care. No hospitality nor patients being screened for priority. This hospital is not the place to have a loved one treated at by any means.
Negative experience: My first time at UMMC - Jackson, MS....ZERO STARS!!! Denied access to see sister before & after procedure. I was denied access to restroom located on 1R Floor by day shift security but they changed their mind after interrogating me about all where I needed to go. By then it was almost too late. Security too interested with what was on their phone & group conversation outside. Was denied wristbands & never updated on that process while others in groups got theirs & gained access. Was instructed to sit in foyer between lobby & outside from 9a - 5:30p. Some staff coming through weren't friendly at all.
Fantastic experience: How can I go for a ride if I don't have insurance?
Negative experience: My daughter became ill at the end of Feb. I went to various Gastro specialist before a coworker praised this hospital. We came to this location through the ED where she was admitted. The admitting "doctor" was rude and asked me "What do I want them to do?" So, I replied, "Well, if you cannot figure out what is wrong I'll take her home". My daughter began crying because she did not want to be admitted in the hospital. Not once did I receive reassurance from this hospital that they will do everything they can to figure out what's wrong with her. Instead, they wrote my child off as having mental issues. I removed my daughter from this hospital and told them I will be taking her back to Pittsburgh, Pa where I know she will receive care. The attending "doctor" lied stating I said I did not want their records because it would be heresy. When in fact I said "You all did not do anything, why do I want your records?" Fast forward I went to an actual ranking hospital and they found that my child was constipated and her nerves were misfiring and gave her medication. I asked for the administrator to call me from UMMC and I received a call from a nurse but not the administrator. They denied my daughter from seeing a Gastro doctor while she was admitted and was more concern about my earnings, her dad's earnings, if she had enough to eat, and other eating disorders. Prior to leaving, I stated that, "I have a background in mental health and the psychologist did not perform the test correctly and return your medical degrees back to the Cracker Jack box where it was received". I wonder how many other children of color they treated this way? If it wasn't for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh my child would still be sick or worse. I am expecting all the "doctors" to give my child an apology because it is hurtful towards a child when adults think she is lying.
Negative experience: This place is terrible. I expect better from a teaching hospital.
Negative experience: While visiting a friend who was having brain surgery, we were escorted from the facility by security. She had the receptionist remove our wrist bands and told us we could wait outside. Reason for removing us, Limited space in the waiting room. 12 to 15 people were in the waiting room. The waiting room was designed for 30 to 40 people. Empty chairs were everywhere. We had no altercations no one ask us to step outside because of overcrowding. We were simply profiled by race. I am not black.
Negative experience: If I could give 0 stars I would. SURGICAL ICU NURSES sit at the nurses station on their phones , FaceTime and all while patients are requesting assistance. God forbid you’re a concerned family member with questions. It’s almost as if they get upset because you’d like to advocate for the patient. The patient is in serious condition, but is very well aware of things being said a ANd done while family is not there to advocate for pain, discomfort, and overall treatment. Their attitudes all pretty much suck and it’s unfortunate to have to deal with a staff who lack bedside manners. ALSO, the check-in staff ? VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! My kid had to use the restroom and instead of simply suggesting where he could go , she stated , “You doing allet , you can go”. I wasn’t doing much but stating where do they expect children who are waiting at the hospital to use the restroom?!? The restrooms aren’t near the patient rooms so hospital should revise policy aNd better train staff on response to people who aren’t familiar w It’s policy. Offer suggestions. Don’t be rude and shrug people off.
Negative experience: So far my experience has not been very good and a nurse named Morgan just made it worse. I can assure you Morgan doesn't need to be working with the public, not with her personality. I can see UMC doesn't care much about their reputation with 2.6 star and 3.6 star ratings. I have had procedures canceled at the last minute after leaving my house as early as 4:30am just to get there at the correct time. This is not my only experience UMC. My last surgery was a mixed bag. The surgeon was very good but just like running into someone like Morgan this go round that ruins things for you we had several nurses that just weren't very nice nor professional. They may be a hospital but you would think they would care more about how people are talked to and treated.
Negative experience: UMMC is definitely the worst hospital I have ever been to, especially for an ER visit. I sat in the ER for over 8 hours for a GUNSHOT wound. The nurses present were playing and laughing with each other. One of the nurses made the remark “I hope she know she ‘bout’ to be waiting a while.” Every professional there lacked empathy and sympathy for the patients presents. To be a Trauma 1 facility you failed in every way. You let the blood pouring from my wound sit all over the waiting room. There was a lack of janitorial service. I highly recommend you go anywhere but this facility. The health care professionals do not care about your pain and suffering or well being.
Positive experience: Received EXCELLENT care from the nursing & support staff on W4 during my 1 week stay earlier this year. Even the food wasn't too bad. The ER experience, however, left a lot to be desired. I guess if you are suffering severe trauma, it might be the place to go but, if it's a matter of not being able to breathe...
Fantastic experience: So many people complain about ummc but nobody gives them the thanks that they deserve. Yes, I have waited in the emergency room but when you actually get to the back, the magic happens. The nurses and doctors are amazing. Just know that when you get back there, you are part of a team. The team consists of many moving parts, the doctors, nurses, lab techs, ekg techs and student doctors. First, they will try to get you some relief, you should be very honest to the doctor. Secondly, they will try to find out your history and cause. Lastly, they will admit you if more tests are needed. 14 months ago, ummc saved my life. I had covid, pneumonia, internal bleeding and kidney transplant rejection. I didn’t know that I was alive until the wonderful nurses came in at night to help me. I think that I was on the 2nd floor. I appreciate them so much for being there for me ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Negative experience: The IT dept here has the WORST attitudes EVER!!!!! Like they ask how can they help, and you try to explain what the problem is but the lady kept cutting me off and kept talking. How can you help me solve my issue when you are just steady talking I understand IT gets calls from people with dumb requests all the time, but that gives you no right to speak to every person as if they are dumb as well. They are nothing like AU Medical IT. They actually care and are kind people that want to help. Take example from them. If you hate your job that much, please go find another one and stop being nasty to people that only need help.
Negative experience: First of all I don't recommend anybody to come here for help they just gone push u to the side n wait till the last min to help n they knowing u in pain n when u get in the room n stay over night they don't even care if they do they job right or not just like a grace watkins that currently works here. She don't even make sure her patients feel before goin in to surgery. The lack of care Im surprised I ain't think I was have to go through all this.
Negative experience: Fast track nurse at 5pm is sickening
Negative experience: Ridiculous that one has to wait for a wheelchair for over 3hours!!!
Positive experience: Nurses and doctors are nice. Not liking the fact that if you don't have anyone to pick up your child from school or have someone to watch them. You can't bring them with you if you already have 2 people waiting on someone that's having surgery. They will not even let my 15 year old son in the hospital and just sit downstairs. Instead he's gotta stay in the car. I mean really!
Negative experience: Terribly slow had to sit for hours and hours waiting to be seen, going to another hospital only minutes to be seen
Negative experience: Doctors and nurses in trauma and the OR were great. Housekeepers were the most kind of all. Unfortunately, that’s all the praise I have to give. Everyone else needs much improvement. Lack of empathy and understanding was borderline negligent.
Negative experience: Gave birth to my son here. Was left in the ER for 5 hours alone until a room became available. My husband couldn't come back because we had our daughter there. By the time i got upstairs it was time to push. No time to get my husband in my room so i was alone again. Shower was dirty, water was cold, urine around the toilet on the floor. (NOT MY URINE) They asked if we needed a ride home like we were some sort of animals. Food was cold, drinks were hot. I feel for anyone who gives birth here . They do not care!!!
Negative experience: They don’t have a public restroom. You pay parking fee but aren’t allowed to use the restroom. I drove 5 hours to sit in the lobby
Negative experience: My sister went to the hospital and was treated terrible by the ambulance crew and hospital staff ! The hospital refuse to give her the ambulance staff name and the lady from the ambulance crew physically abused her and also lied to the staff and police and said that she slapped her which is impossible due to the health state she was in . The hospital staff put her in this from until she seen a medical profession and she continued to ask for the crew member’s name and no one knew nothing! If I could give a zero rating I would!!
Fantastic experience: Awesome care and dedicated team of neonatologists
Negative experience: I was born there, I almost died there, worked there for five years, no grudge is holding for this establishment, but truth be told, find healthcare elsewhere, I was given the wrong medicine on purpose…be warned and aware ✌️
Fantastic experience: ER staff was thorough, professional, and polite. this hospital has gotten a bad rap in the past like every other hospital for several reasons from being understaffed to long wait times. But weve Been to other hospitals in metro area to be misdiagnosed and rushed out, only to be back 24 hrs later. Found that UMC has some of the best drs. Accurate diagnosis can make a difference of life or death.
Negative experience: Absolutely horrible went to hospital er at 9:00 For my son that is 3 he had a fever as well as chest pain. They never called us we ended up leaving at 12 midnight without seeing a doctor
Negative experience: Their patient experience office is a joke. They don't follow up or resolve complaints, don't return phone calls, don't make sure your issue is resolved... It is impossible to find out whom they report to to have this addressed. The administration office refuses to tell you. I guess they don't want to fix problems either. They are a bunch of people who don't do their job, nobody cares and no way to hold them accountable. The director is just as bad as everyone else. If she actually cared about problem resolution she'd hold her employees accountable but that doesn't happen. She is as bad as everyone else not returning promised phone calls either. I am guessing channel 4 news is the way to resolve problems there since they don't and don't care that they don't. No wonder the place is so poorly rated. They aren't even remotely interested in fixing issues.
Positive experience: This is an awesome hospital. I only have one comment and that is if you need to go to the Emergency Room, only go if your injuries or status are VERY severe. This is a Trauma 1 hospital so the sickest of the sick or injured should only go here. This ER highly prioritizes due to level of life or death situation and they receive people from all of Mississippi and parts of Alabama and Louisiana. They are an expert staff but they get overloaded sometimes so wait times can be exceptionally long. If it is a life or death situation, this is the first and only one I would have care for me.
Negative experience: Complete garbage Hospital. I was born here and all my drs are here. I got kicked off the kidney transplant list just cause of my insurance. I went and got new insurance after they told me get it and they would relistme. Completely a lie. I even have MS medicare and they won't even take that. Saying it's out of network. I will never darken their doorway again. I don't recommend this place at all.
Negative experience: I have no clue what you have going on at UMMC but it is painfully obvious there is a management issue with the emergency room. I arrived at about 5 pm tonight. The power went out soon after. It happens. The generator didn't work and it took 45 minutes to get it back on. Later on it went off again but this time the generator did kick on. I was there 3 1/2 hours and 1 maybe 2 people got called. I am not even sure if they actually got helped. I asked the nurse what are the chances of me being seen in the next hour. 0% I asked before midnight which is 3 1/2 hours away. She could not tell me but very unlikely. I asked if their computers were up and she said NO!!!!!!!!! I did ask earlier "Why were you not diverting patients to other hospitals since this hospital is on its knees at the moment?" I got a diverted answer. I have been in a hospital in Mexico and I will take it all day over UMMC.
Fantastic experience: They have been very helpful and nice to me
Negative experience: Good to know I can't get care for a brain injury because ummc won't take my Medicaid insurance looks like I'll die because I don't have money so much for caring Money over life
Negative experience: My family and I were clearly victims of racial discrimination there this past Saturday....04-23-22. We were going to see my niece and were told my daughter couldn't come up. Not one minute later, two white gentleman and a young boy were allowed to go up. I asked the lady how old do you have to be to go up to visit someone...she replied "13". The boy looked to be 7/8 tops..but clearly not 13. I informed her that hospital policies should apply to everyone, not just who they want them to apply to. She stated "you're right sir" and still allowed them to go up. Clear discrimination. Thanks for letting me know who you are university of Mississippi clinic/hospital.
Negative experience: The cafeteria “Main” is trash!!! Expensive and barely gives you food!! You will be better off going to Wiser or leaving and coming back. I’m a really nice person but they do not feed my US employees right!!! I feel back for this low review. But the eatery ain’t worth the one star. Turn over rate is high. Don’t listen to me try it yourself! Hands down I know you’re agree so I’ll just say less
Negative experience: I’m completely upset with how the staff handled my care, I was shaking and having heart problems all to check my vitals and make me sit in some waiting room for hours without being seen, I truly felt like I was fading away in my chair, ended up getting up and walking out and going to another hospital. Worst hospital experience of my entire life
Negative experience: The hospital is an awesome health care facility. They were so good to my mom that is 76 and had a bad fall. Nothing but good things to say about this facility. That is during the week but the weekend was awful rude Charge Nurse and security was terrible. They don’t tell you the hospital policies til after fact. During the week they are a great staff/ However the weekend shifts are very rude.
Fantastic experience: They are caring! You're going to run into some bad apples but not all of them are bad ,rude people! God bless you all
Positive experience: TRYING TO PAY THESE PEOPLE IS A JOKE YOU CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BILL AND IT SENDS YOU AROUND THE WORLD TO THE SAME SPOT YOU CAME FROM AND NEVER LETS YOU TALK TO A PERSON. IT'S A JOKE
Negative experience: My dad had a severe stroke one week after he and my mother celebrated their 63rd anniversary. He was transported to University as the local hospital wasn't equipped to provide the care he needed. Shortly after he was admitted, a staff member removed and kept his wedding band. My brother and his daughter both reached out several times to the hospital about it and never got so much as an apology. It's a shame that people trust you to care for their loved ones and you don't care that one of your employees steals from them. My dad has very limited speech now but he remembers them taking his ring.
Fantastic experience: My husband was hospitalized here for over a week on the Covid unit and I can’t speak highly enough about the amazing staff. We aren’t from here so on top of the stress from being sick, there was the added stress of not being familiar with the area. He shared one story after another about how everyone went above and beyond & treated him like family. Even though I wasn’t able to see him or visit during this time, they were great about contacting me with updates and reassuring me that he was taken care of, too. So grateful for the amazing nurses, doctors and other staff members that were a part of his stay. Thank you!
Negative experience: The doctor, nurses, and facilities were all great. My issue is with the billing. We were made an appointment to see a urologist for my son. The insurance was approved. I have a 50 dollar copay for specialist. However they coded it as a hospital visit and not a office visit. I had to pay 202 dollars instead. I called them and they would not change it. I cancelled all future appointments and will not be back. Anyone going be prepared to pay more than your copay due to them coding all the visits as hospital visits even though it's just an office visit.
